WHAT IS A PRECIOUS STONE?
The Cullinan Diamond was the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, weighing 3,106.75 carats (621.35 g),
discovered at the Premier No. 2 mine in Cullinan, South Africa, on 26 January 1905. It was named after Thomas Cullinan,
the mine's chairman.
The 125West Ruby is currently the largest ruby in the world. This unique specimen is one of the world's largest known
rough ruby gemstones and weighs 8 18,696 carats. The ruby is semi-translucent to opaque and contains rutile, which
may create a six-ray star if cut 'en cabochon' (i.e. polished but not faceted).
The largest blue star sapphire is worth $100M. It weights 1,404.49 carats (equivalent to about 280g) and was found in a
mine in Sri Lanka.
The world's biggest ever emerald, weighing 1.1kg and worth an estimated £2m, has been discovered in a mine in Zambia
