Describing Things (Place, Person, objects, etc)

Learning Objectives
After complete this section, The students should be able to:
1. Understand familiar names, words and very simple
sentences, for example on notices and posters or in
catalogues.

2. Fill in forms with personal details, for example entering


your name, nationality and address on a hotel

3. Practice to describe Things (Place, Person, objects, etc).

4. Listening phrases and common vocabulary on common


area (Place, Person, objects, etc) registration form.

Descriptive Text

 The descriptive text is the text that describes what kind of person or an
object described, good shape, properties, number and others in particular.
 A. Goal (purpose) of the descriptive text is clear, namely to explain,
DESCRIBE or disclose a specific individual or object.

 B. Generic Structure of Descriptive Text :


 Identification: contains the identification of matter / something that will be
described.
 Description: contains the explanation / description of the thing/ person to
mention a few properties.
Language features of Descriptive text :
 A. Specific participant has a certain object, is not common and unique (only
one). for example: Losari beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Rio

 B. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun (noun) for
example, be used for the following expression: a beautiful beach, a handsome
man, the famous place in Makassar, etc..

 C. Use the present tense sentence patterns. The simple sentence patterns
used are simple present for telling the facts of object descriptions.

 D. Action verbs, there are verbs that show an activity (activity can be seen),
for example: run, sleep, walk, cut etc.
Examples:

(Belt) It is long, smooth and flexible. It is made of leather, you can wear it with your jeans.
(tea pot) It is small and round. It is hard, opaque and fragile. You use it to prepare tea.
(Ring)
(T-shirt)
(scissors)
(motorbike)

 Choose one thing, or person in your area, or a place that you ever visits.
 Make a descriptive text about the thing you have choosen.
 Make sure that all your task is different one another.
 Submit the task by tonight before the midnight to the chair person.
