PAINT

What is paint?

• Paints are liquid compositions of pigments and binders which when applied to the surface
in thin coats dry to form a solid film to impart the surface a decorative finish apart from
giving protection to the base material ( i.e., concrete , masonry and plaster surfaces )
from weathering , corrosion and other chemical and biological attacks.

Characteristics of an ideal paint:

• paint should form hard and durable surface


• Readily available and should give attractive appearance
• Easily applicable and should have good spreading quality
• Should dry in a reasonable time with out showing hair cracks
• Should form uniform colour on drying
• Should be stable for a longer period of time
• Should not be affected by atmospheric agencies
Constituents of a paint :

1. Base - fine powder


which provides opaque
coating to hide the surface

2. Vehicle or carrier or binder - liquid substance which hold the


ingredients together and make it possible to spread the paint
evenly on the surface
3. Drier – to accelerate the process of drying
4. Colouring pigment - provides colour and opacity

5. Solvents or thinners - to reduce


thickness of paint

a. DECORATIVE PAINTS
- Emulsion paint - water based with vinyl or acrylic added for durability and
used on walls, ceilings and some exterior surfaces
( finishes : gloss, satin, eggshell, silk, flat matt or matt )
