Why use alford loop antenna ?
Since the VOR provides horizontal guidance, the
VOR system requires antennas that are horizontally
polarized.
Simple loop antennas of small dimensions are capable
of producing such patterns but with low efficiency.
The Alford Loop antenna is relatively efficient and is
nearly omni-directional in addition to the highly
desirable characteristics of broadband operation and
resistance to temperature changes.
Con’t
The Alford loop antenna is constructed of four half-
wave elements, folded and arranged so that the
element midsections form a square approximately
¼ wavelength on a side.
It can be seen that since the folded-back portions of
the elements have very little exposure to the
outside loop, they contribute very little to the
radiated field.
