Composite Shapes
A composite shape, also called a composite figure, is a geometric
shape constructed from two or more geometric figures. A few
examples of shape combinations that can be made to form
composite shapes include triangles and rectangles, triangles and
squares, squares and rectangles, and triangles and circles . It
means that a shape that is made from other shapes such as two
rectangles (L-shape) or a triangle and a rectangle.

To find the area of composite shapes you just need to break down
the shape into individual pieces and calculate their separate
pieces then add them back together again to find a total area.
What is in
You first need to review the formulas to calculate areas for basic figures
such as trapezoids, circle and semi-circle.

Area formula of a rectangle or parallelogram

The area, A, of a rectangle is the product of its length, l, and width, w.

A = l×w
Area of Semicircle and Circle
The area of a semicircle is half of the area of the circle. As the area of a circle is πr2. So,
the area of a semicircle is 1/2(πr2), where r is the radius. The value of π is 3.14 or 22/7.

Area of Semicircle = 1/2 (πr ) 2

Area of Triangle
The area of a triangle is always half the product of the height and base.

Area=1/2(base⋅height)
Area of Square

Area A = s x s where s is the length of each side of the square.

For example, the area of a square of each side of length 8 feet is 8 times
8 or 64 square feet.
Examples of Composite Figures
Use the grid to determine the dimensions needed to and find the areas of
the shapes shown below.

Use the grid to determine the dimensions needed to and find the areas
of the shapes shown below.
The main idea is to decompose the given shape into known basic shapes
such squares, rectangles, triangles, parallelogram and trapezoids and then
use addition and/or subtraction to calculate the area of the given shape.
The shape in part a) is shown below with the large rectangle completed.
a. The area A of the given shape is calculated using 3 steps:
1) calculate the area of the large rectangle ABWF :
A1 = Length × Width = 5 × 3 = 15 unit2
2) Calculate the area of the small rectangle CWED :
A2 = CW × WE = 3 × 1 = 3 unit2
3) Subtract the area of the small rectangle from that of the large rectangle:
A = A1 - A2 = 15 - 3 = 12 unit2

Mathematical problems involving composite shapes often involve finding

either the area or perimeter of the composite shape, or both. Solving this
type of problem involves finding the unknowns of the individual shapes in
the composite figure and combining them.
b. The shape in part b) is shown below with the large rectangle completed.

a. The area A of the given shape is calculated using 3 steps:

1) calculate the area of the large rectangle GHZL :
A1 = Length × Width = 5 × 3 = 15 unit2
2) Calculate the area of the trapezoid JIZK :
A2 = (1/2) × ZK × (IZ + JK) = (1/2) × 1 ×(2 + 3) = (1/2) × 1 × 5 =
(1/2) 5 = 5 / 2 = 2.5 unit2
3) Subtract the area of the trapezoid from that of the large rectangle: A = A1
- A2 = 15 - 2.5 = 12.5 unit2

rectangle. How much carpeting does she need to buy to cover her entire family room?
2.Herbert is decorating the bulletin board in the school’s lobby. The bulletin board is a
7ft by 11 ft rectangle. He decides to add a black border around the entire bulletin
board. What is the length of border that he needs?
3.Charles has a rectangular flower garden that is 5 yd long and 12 yd wide. One bag of
fertilizer can cover 6 yd². How many bags will he need to buy to cover the entire
garden?
4.Before soccer practice, Laura warms up by jogging around the soccer field that is 80
yards by 120 yards. How many yards does she jog if she goes around the field two
times?
5. Jose has a rectangular garden that is 7m long and 14 m wide .Inside of this,He wants
to make a a circular flower garden with a radius of 3 m. What is the area that is not
planted with flower?
