The story of Jonah is about God’s love.

How God loves his people and how he loves the world.
The book of Jonah is the illustration of John 3:16.
It is also an illustration of Matthew 28:19
‘to go preach God’s message and make disciples’.
FOUR IMPORTANT PRINCIPLES OF THE LOVE OF GOD
1. GOD’S LOVE IS PROACTIVE
(God takes the first initiative)
2. GOD LOVES PEOPLE
(Imperfect people and God’s love manifested through people)
3. GOD’S LOVE PURSUES
(You can run away from him but he will pursue you)
4. GOD’S LOVE IS POWERFUL
(It will transform lives)
 GOD IS
PATIENT
(Jonah 2)
We are discussing about God’s love so that we
will learn how to love others.
The standard of our love is God’s love for us.
God’s love is patiently seeking our highest good.
God is after your highest good.
You may not like it, you may not feel it, and you
may think God does not love you anymore, you
are having problems but the truth is, God is
after your highest good but He’s very patient.
 (1) HE WILL LISTEN TO YOU PATIENTLY
Jonas 2:1-2
“Unya didto sa tiyan sa isda, nag-ampo si Jonas sa Ginoo nga
iyang Dios. Miingon siya: (2)Sa akong kalisdanan, O Ginoo,
nagsangpit ako kanimo, ug gitubag mo ako. Didto sa
kalibotan sa mga patay nagpakitabang ako, ug gidungog mo
ako.”
How will you feel if people come to you because they have problem
then he come to you again because they need help? So the only
time they will call you, the only time they will bother you it’s
because they need money, its because they need help.
We only talk to God when we have problems.
You become very prayerful when you have problems.
Because they realize they need God.
 1 Timoteo 6:17
“Tambagi ang mga dato nga dili sila magmapahitas-on
ug nga dili magsalig sa bahandi nga dili makahatag ug
kasigurohan, kondili diha sa Dios nga sa walay sukod
naghatag kanato sa tanan aron kita malipay.”
Panultihon 20:30
“Usahay kinahanglan makatilaw kita ug mapait nga
kasinatian una pa mag-usab kita sa atong kinabuhi.”
Job 36:15
“Apan tudloan sa Dios ang tawo pinaagi sa mga pag-
antos, ug gamiton niya ang kalisdanan aron
makasabot sila.”
 Salmo 103:8, 11, 13
“Maluluy-on ug mahigugmaon ang Ginoo, dili daling
masuko ug hupong sa gugmang walay paglubad…
(11)Ingon kahabog sa langit ibabaw sa yuta, mao
usab kadako ang iyang gugma kanila nga may
pagtamod kaniya… (13)Ingon kamaluluy-on sa usa ka
amahan sa iyang mga anak, mao usab kamaluluy-on
ang Ginoo kanila nga nagpasidungog kaniya.”
Even you abused him, even you only come to him when you
need help, he will answer you when you call on him
heartily.
The word slow to anger has the idea of being patient.
When Jonah prayed from the heart, God heard him.
Love means you need to listen.
 (2) HE WILL DISCIPLINE YOU PATIENTLY

Jonas 2:1-2
“Unya didto sa tiyan sa isda, nag-ampo si Jonas
sa Ginoo nga iyang Dios. Miingon siya: (2)Sa
akong kalisdanan, O Ginoo, nagsangpit ako
kanimo, ug gitubag mo ako. Didto sa
kalibotan sa mga patay nagpakitabang ako,
ug gidungog mo ako.”
Jonah for the first time prayed from the stomach of the
fish. If you are God what will you do?
 2 Pedro 3:9
“Ang Ginoo dili maglangan pagtuman sa iyang gisaad sumala
sa gihunahuna sa uban. Apan siya nagpailob kaninyo, kay
dili siya buot nga may usa nga malaglag, kondili nga ang
tanan maghinulsol ug mobiya sa ilang mga sala.”
When you are not obeying God and nothing is happening to you
don’t think that God is not aware of this.
God is just being patient.
The Bible does not say that God is responsible for everything but
God is allowing certain things to happen because he is patiently
at work.
He disciplined you because He just wants you to become a better
person.
 Jonas 2:3-4
“Gitambog mo ako sa kahiladman sa dagat,
gilumsan ako sa katubigan, ug mitabon
kanako ang gamhanan mong mga balod.
(4)Nagdahom ako nga gipahilayo na ako
kanimo ug dili na ako makakita pag-usab sa
balaan mong Templo.”
In his prayer, Jonah saw behind human action there is
God who is in control.
There are no accidents in the lives of God’s people only incidents.
God can use incidents in your life to accomplish his
purpose provided you respond properly.
But many times when you encounter trials, the
death of our love ones, when people get sick,
you will be tempted to question God.

But we should remember that behind

human actions, behind human failures,
behind disappointments there is a God
who has a master plan because he’s after
of your highest good.
 Panultihon 3:11-12
“Anak, kon, badlongon ka sa Ginoo, pamati
kaniya ug dawata kini ingon nga pasidaan.
(12)Kay badlongon sa Ginoo kadtong iyang
gimahal, ingon nga badlongon sa amahan ang
iyang anak nga iyang gipasigarbo.”
Most parents do not know how to discipline their
children, they are sentimental parents.
To make their children happy, they give in all the time.

The other extreme is: most parents will discipline

out of anger. They don’t show love.
 Jonas 2:5-6
“Mitikyop ug miputos kanako ang katubigan; sa
hingpit mitabon kanako ang kadagatan ug
naputos ang akong ulo sa mga sagbot sa
dagat. (6)Miadto ako sa kahiladman sa
kabukiran, sa dapit kansang mga ganghaan
dili na nabukas hangtod sa kahangtoran;
apan gidala mo ako nga buhi gikan sa
kahiladman, O Ginoo, nga akong Dios!”
This is a prayer by someone who has been allowed by
God to hit rock bottom.
 Jonas 2:7
“Sa dihang gibati ko nga nag-anam nag kahanaw ang
akong kinabuhi, nag-ampo ako kanimo, O Ginoo,
ug gidungog mo ako, didto sa balaan mong
Templo.”
When did Jonah remembered the Lord?
Why three days and three nights?
Jonah thought he can run away from God but God keep on
chasing after him.
God did something on him.
This is called discipline.
Do you like discipline?
What is the difference between discipline @ punishment?
Discipline - God will give you time to repent.
 Jonas 2:8-9
“Sila nga nagsimba sa mga diosdios wala na
mag-alagad kanimo. (9)Apan ako nagdayeg
kanimo; maghalad ako kanimog mananap
nga sunogon ug tumanon ko ang akong mga
panaad. Ang kaluwasan nagagikan sa Ginoo.”
Kini nagpasabot nga si Jonas sa panahon sa iyang
kalisdanan wala siya mosingpit sa mga diosdios.
 IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A BETTER
PERSON there’s a simple guidelines for
you to remember.

TRIALS + TIME + LOVE + FAITH

will result in
GROWTH, MATURITY,
BLESSING.
 (1) TRIALS (Problems)
Trials alone may not become a blessing. Some people have
problems they become hard. Just because you have
problem does not automatically mean you become
better.
(2) TIME (be patient)
Our problem is we like shortcuts.
There are something about your character that needs time
to transform. So, God allows problem to linger on.
Example: your are proud.
God will usually allow problem in your life so that you will
realize that you are not superman, you are human, full of
frailties. Like Jonah.
 Daniel 4:28-34, 36-37
“Kining tanan nahitabo gayod kang Hari Nabucodonosor.
(29)Tapos sa usa ka tuig samtang naglakawlakaw siya didto
sa atop sa iyang palasyo sa Babilonia. (30)Miingon siya,
‘Kini ang gamhanang Babilonia nga natukod pinaagi sa
akong gahom aron mapadayag ang akong kadungganan ug
kahalangdon. (31)Wala pa gani siya makahumag sulti, may
tingog nga gikan sa langit nga nag-ingon: Hari
Nabucodonosor, pamati sa akong isulti: ang imong
gingharian gikuha na gikan kanimo. Hinginlan ka gikan sa
katilingban ug motipon ka pagpuyo sa mga mananap.
Mahisama ka sa baka nga magkaon ug sagbot sulod sa pito
ka tuig hangtod nga moila ka na nga ang Dios nga Labing
Halangdon mao ang magbubuot sa gingharian sa mga tawo
ug iyang katungod ang pagtugyan niini ngadto sa tawo nga
iyang nahimut-an.
(33)Dihadiha nahitabo kini kang Nabucodonosor.
Gihinginlan siya gikan sa katilingban ug mikaon
na lang siyag sagbot sama sa baka. Adlaw-
adlaw nahumod siya sa yamog ug nanag-as na
ang iyang buhok daw balhibo sa agila ug ang
iyang mga kuko mora nag kuko sa langgam.
(34)Miingon ang hari, ‘Unya sa pagkatapos sa
gitagal nga panahon, ako si Nabucodonosor,
mihangad sa langit ug mibalik kanako ang
maayong pangisip. Gidayeg ug gipasidunggan
ko ang Dios nga Labing Halangdon nga buhi
hangtod sa hangtod…
(36)Sa paghibalik sa akong maayong pangisip, mibalik
usab ang akong matahom ug gamhanang gingharian
ug ang akong pagkahalangdon. Mibalik usab kanako
ang akong mga magtatambag ug ang akong mga
sinaligan ug naghari ako uban sa labaw pang
kabantog. (37)Karon ako, si Nabucodonosor,
nagdayeg ug nagpasidungog na sa Hari sa langit kay
matarong ang tanan niyang buhat ug husto ang iyang
mga paagi ug kadtong mga garboso iya gayong
ipaubos.”
God allows problem that beyond your control so that you will
come to Him, so that you will pray.
Imagine if you don’t have problem you become so proud, you
become so judgmental.
 Deuteronomio 8:12-14, 17-18
“Kon makakaon na kamo ug mangabusog na ug
makahimo na kamog matahom nga mga balay ug
magpuyo na niini, (13)kon ang inyong mga
kahayopan ug mga plata ug bulawan ug ang
tanan ninyong kabtangan modaghan na,
(14)ayaw gayod kamo pagpagarbo. Ayaw kalimti
ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios… (17)Ayaw kamo pag-
ingon, “Naangkon ko kining bahandia tungod sa
akong gahom ug kakugi. (18)Hinumdumi ninyo
ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios kay siya ang naghatag
kaninyog gahom aron kamo mangadato…”
 (3) LOVE
You must realize that God allowing trials/problems
because he loves you.
(4) FAITH
You need to believe that God has a better plan for
your life.
The connection between God’s resources, God’s
power and your life- the link is your faith in Him.
Faith means I trust God, I trust his character, I trust
his promise.
So no matter what happens to you, you believe
that the best is yet to come.
 Roma 5:3-4
“Nagmalipayon usab kita diha sa atong mga
pag-antos kay nasayod man kita nga ang mga
pag-antos maghimo kanatong malahutayon.
(4)Ang paglahutay makahimo kanato nga
kahimut-an sa Dios ug ang iyang kahimuot
naghatag kanatog paglaom
 (3)HE WILL RESTORE YOU PATIENTLY.
Jonas 2:9
“Apan ako nagdayeg kanimo; maghalad ako kanimog
mananap nga sunogon ug tumanon ko ang akong
mga panaad. Ang kaluwasan nagagikan sa Ginoo.”
It does not matter where you are, it does not matter
what you’ve done, you can always be restored, you
just need to repent.
Many of us, we don’t want to repent. We want to
insist in our own way.
Perhaps Jonah made another promise in the stomach
of the fish, Lord if you will save from the stomach of
the fish, I will obey you, I will go to Nineveh.
 Jonas 2:10
“Unya gimandoan sa Ginoo ang isda nga iluwa si Jonas didto
sa baybayon. Ug gituman kini sa isda.”
By saving through fish- it is God’s way of telling to Jonah: ‘Jonah
I love you’.
Are you running away from God?
You can do whatever you want but you need to remember,
what you sow you will reap.
Someday when you reap something painful, I want to remind
you, you are never far away from God, just say; ‘Lord I want
to repent. And when you repent God is always there.
But why do you want to wait until you are thrown into the sea
and swallowed by a fish?
