Brief History of Civil Engineering Education
in Myanmar
Department of Engineering in Rangoon University was originally
established in 1924 during the British colonial period.
After World War II, in 1946, the college became the Faculty of
Engineering of Rangoon University.
In 1961, the college became Burma Institute of Technology (BIT) of
Rangoon University and was moved to the current building complex in
Gyogone built by the Soviet Union.
Introduction of Civil Engineering
• Branch of engineering and Science
• Civil engineering covers the all area of the modern and ancient civilization.
• One of the root of development any country.
• Deals with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the physical
and naturally built environment.
Branch of Civil Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering
• The application of Civil engineering to aspects of geology.
• (1914~1922) Geotechnical Commission of Swedish State Railways was the
first use the Word “Geotechnical’’ in the sense that what we know it today.
• The application of the principles of soil and rock mechanic to design for
foundation , retaining and earth structures.
• All structures are founded on ground. Forces from structures are safely
transferred to soil.
Geotechnical Engineering
Essential understanding of ground Behavior, interaction between soil and
structure involves :
 Foundation
 Slopes Stability
 Retaining Structures
 Highway Pavement Design
 Embankments and Earth Dams
 Tunnels, underground structures and deep cuts

Pile Foundation in Bridge Construction M Tower Foundation Construction

Slopes and Retaining Structures

River bank protection Minbu-Ann Road slope stability

Ayeyarwaddy river bank protection Retaining Wall (Hlaingbwe Creek)

Pavement & Dam

Soil Stabilization in Road Construction Road construction (Subbase & Subgrade)

Structural Engineering
• Especially focus on the frame work structures
• Strength ,Safe and stable against gravity load , wind , earthquake and other
environmental load.
• Calculate and predict the how different materials will response under the those
external loads such as compression, tension , bending and torsion .
• Design and constructed the according to their responses.
Types of Structures

Bridge Structure Skyscraper Analysis model and design

Transportation Engineering
• Roads, railways, sea/river and air transport design and construction according
to the scientific approach
• It involves planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance.
• In runways ,roads and railways design include various the study of pavement
systems
• Maintenance and up gradation of docks, harbors, airports, railway system
based on requirements , population growth is a part of this discipline
Different types of Transportation System

Yangon-Mandalay Expressway Urban Transportation

Yangon International Airport Rail Transport

Environmental Engineering

Responsibilities :
 Disposing hazardous materials
 Waste management and treatment
 Biological process in pollution control
 Water quality an waste

Building Material
Design, analyze, and construct materials such as:

• Brick

• Cement

• Concrete

• Sand

• Reinforcement

• Glass

• Plastic

• Wood

• Tiles
Types of material and structures
Construction Management
Construction Managers:
 Review contracts,
 Order materials,
 Hire and schedule sub-contractors.
The job of a construction manager is to:
 Provide quality control and insure project is completed on time,
 Within budget.
Construction Management
• 4 M’s

 Men

 Money

 Material

 Machine

• Construction of Structure Divided in two parts

 Substructure

 Superstructure
Water Resources Engineering
 Wide variety of roles in designing and managing water-based systems

 Study and management of equipment, facilities and techniques that are used to manage and
preserve life’s most plentiful resource.

 Assessing how and the best ways in which to control water as it pertains to water-related
activities – such as irrigation, waste disposal and canal development
Application of Water Resources
Engineering

Water Treatment Plant Dam and Reservoir for storage, flood

control, power, etc.

River Training Structures Irrigation Canal Ground Water Management

Surveying
 Science and art of making all essential measurements

 Technique of determining the relative position of different features on, above or beneath the
surface of the earth by means of direct or indirect measurements and finally representing
them on a sheet of paper known as plan or map
