Cell Cycle
Cancer Cell
Cells that divides relentlessly, forming
solid tumors or flooding the blood with
abnormal cells.
Originate within tissues and, as they grow
and divide, they diverge ever further from
normalcy.
Cancer is derived from the Greek
words carcinos and carcinoma for “crab”.
Cancer Cell
Fail to listen to signals that tell them to
stop growing or commit cell suicide
(apoptosis) when the cells become old or
damaged.
Invade nearby tissues.
May spread to other regions of the body, a
process called “Metastasis”.
Can be immortal
Causes
Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to
the DNA within cells. The DNA inside a
cell is packaged into a large number of
individual genes, each of which contains a
set of instructions telling the cell what
functions to perform, as well as how to
grow and divide. Errors in the instructions
can cause the cell to stop its normal function
and may allow a cell to become cancerous.
What do gene mutations do?
Allow rapid growth
Fail to stop uncontrolled cell growth
Make mistakes when repairing DNA errors
