Constructivist and

Narrative Approaches to
Career Development
What is Constructivism?
 According to Jean Piaget’s theory constructivism
is a learning theory which affirms that knowledge
is best gained through a process of action,
reflection and construction. Piaget focuses on the
interaction of experiences and ideas in the
creation of new knowledge.
 According to Hoskins M. (1995) youth often
were not lacking career information; instead, they
did not feel empowered or motivated to put the
information to use. In a number of cases, feelings
ranging from disempowerment to apathy, were
due to a lack of knowledge about self in relation
to the world of work.
Constructivist Approach

talking about your life without judging your past
experiences. The approach is to learn about how
people respond to life and open up about their
dreams in the future.

 One of the basic tenets of a constructivist approach is
that people are meaning-makers. Terms such as
“autopoesis,” “sense-making,” “self-organizing,” and
“meaning-making” have been researched and
described by numerous constructivist writers and
include specific references to how people interpret the
events of their lives in the pursuit of meaning. These
meaning-making processes take on a variety of forms
that promotes individual’s self-awareness (Carlsen,
1988; Mahoney, 1991)
 Constructivist approach explains why people
see careers so differently. Identifying jobs you
will be happy with, not just those you are good
at. Mahuron S (2022)

 The Narrative approach involves engaging in a
person's story and developing the story so that it
may inform his or her career-decisions and
career- related actions and contribute to a
person's adaptation to circumstances. Patton &
Mcllveen (2007)

Narrative Approach Concepts
 According to Jepsen (1992) He’s viewing the individual’s career
as a story.

Client: Narrator

Setting: Family, Friends and Colleagues at work

Action: Goal that will satisfy client’s needs

Instruments: individual’s uses abilities and friends to reach the goal

 Problem arise when instruments, actions, agent
and goals do not match. Jepsen (1992)
Goals of Narrative Approach
 Identify a pattern in individual’s life

 Form a sense of identity of individual

 Learn about the individual’s goal for the future

"I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've
lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to
take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed
over and over and over again in my life. And that is
why I succeed." — Michael Jordan
