MOBILE PHONE:
Advantages: it is small and ha multiple uses, it can be used to talk to friends, send texts, as a camera, a
calculator, a stopwatch and a calendar.
Disadvantage : the facilities on a phone depend on the type of phone – not all phones have all the same functions
– and phones can’t be used as a word processor.
LAPTOP:
Advantages: multiple uses, surf the internet, send mail, play games and do homework
Disadvantages: bigger than a mobile phone and many of the function on a laptop can be done on a phone too.

Garth’s ‘crazy idea’ was an invention for an
‘umbrella hat’- an umbrella positioned on a hat

enthusiastic ( the implication is that
the lady’s interest made him believe in
himself. He started to think of lots of
new idea for inventions.

Suggestions:
2. The lady’s attitude was completely the opposite: she thought the invention was very interesting and a very good idea,
coming from such a young boy. She could see Garth’s potential (what he might be able to do in the future) by looing
at his invention.
3. She told Garth not to let negative people (like the Barker Boys) who did not know anything about invention, make him
feel stupid and small. She also made the point that Garth should keep inventing because one day he might create
something really great.
4. He felt better because the lady had a positive, encouraging attitude and showed that she believed in him and other
children like him. Her comments and her idea to organise the competition showed this.
