CASE STUDY

TRUCK ON A DIET
VECV
SHUBHAM MADHESIA
B.TECH(PART III)
MECHANICAL ENGG
CASE 1

 A) Advantage of weight reduction of an

articulate truck
 B) Different ways of reducing vehicle weight
 C) Material that can be use for weight
reduction of the vehicle
Advantages of weight
reduction
 Reduces fuel consumption thus increase fuel
efficiency
 Reduction in fuel consumption, thus reduces
the air pollution
 Increase life span of the other vehicle
component like-Engine ,wheel etc.
Ways to reduce vehicle
weight
 We can use Aluminium alloys for chassis and
body
 Replacing Standard type chassis by
monocoque type
 Use Carbon fibre wheel
Material for light weight

 Steel density = 8,050 kg/m3

 Use Aluminium 6061 alloys(density =2700
kg/m3) for chassis of the vehicle
 Carbon fibre for wheel
 Polycarbonates(group of thermoplastic
polymer) instead of glass windows
 Glass Reinforced Plastic for body panels
 Composites materials for different parts
CASE 2

 Reducing the Aerodynamic Resistance to a

vehicle
Aerodynamic Resistance

It is mainly caused by
 Frontal Pressure- Effect created by vehicle
body pushing air out of the way
 Rear Vacuum – Caused by air not able to fill
the hole left by vehicle
 Boundary layer - Created by slow moving air
at the surface of the vehicle body
Reducing Aerodynamic
Resistance
 By reducing the frontal area i.e. Height and
width of the vehicle
 Reducing the drag coefficient of car by
improving its shape
 Using Flat panels which prevent the air from
contacting the axles, suspension
 Use skinny tyres, flush wheel caps
 Cover the open wheel as it cause large drag
and air flow turbulence
Reducing Aerodynamic
Resistance
 Converge body work slowly- As it reduces the
Rear vacuum thus the drag coefficient
 Use CFD to optimize drag force and make the
body more streamline , thus reduces the
aerodynamic resistance
Case 3

 Methods for making a vehicle more fuel

efficient
Method for fuel efficient
vehicle
 Fuel efficiency is needed for both economical
as well as environmental purpose.
 Below are the methods which can be use for a
better fuel efficiency
Reducing the weight of the
vehicle
Reducing the weight of the vehicle
significantly reduces the energy needed to
drag the vehicle thus the efficiency will also
increase.
Use turbocharger

It enhance the complete combustion of the

fuel by providing more air for mixing in the
fuel
Aerodynamics of car

By reducing the frontal area and drag

coefficient of the vehicle increases the
efficiency of the vehicle
Less Mechanical Resistance

Mechanical resistance accounts for nearly

15% drop in power from what the engine
produces.
Use of synthetic lubricant , lighter material ,
and tighter manufacturing tolerance will
contribute in reducing the Mechanical
resistance.
 Constant cooling of engine
 Drive the vehicle in fuel efficient range can
also contribute to the fuel efficiency
