WATERPROOFING

PRESENTATION BY –
AASHI GUPTA
NAFISSA ALI
INTRODUCTION TO BASEMENTS

A basement is part of a building that is

either partially or completely
below ground level.
TYPES OF BASEMENT

1. Refurbishment
- Alterations to existing space below ground

2. New garden basement

- New basement adjacent to existing property, usually in a
garden space

3. New basement under new housing

Basement space built as part of a new build development
4. Retrofit
- New space created through excavation below ground
floor of an existing property

5. Deep basements
- Spaces below one story deep
EXTERNAL WATERPROOFING
• Exterior basement waterproofing involves digging out the dirt around basement walls, applying a
moisture barrier and installing a specially designed dimple board that deflects water away from the
wall. Filling the surrounding area with gravel, and establishing a footer draining system.

Advantages
• Exterior waterproofing is the most
effective basement waterproofing
method
• Exterior waterproofing also protects
your foundation from future damage
Disadvantages

• Exterior waterproofing is expensive

• Exterior waterproofing disrupts the land around
your basement
INTERIOR WATERPROOFING
• Interior waterproofing is a method by which water that leaks into the basement are rerouted out and away from
the home. Interior drainage systems usually consist of a series of pipes and drains that can be installed along
the walls to catch seepage, or under the foundation itself to collect excess groundwater around the foundation.

Advantages
• When it’s installed properly, it’s a permanent
solution.
• Interior installation doesn’t significantly disrupt the
exterior or the interior of your home.  You will
need to temporarily move some furniture or storage
temporarily.
• It is cheap.

Disadvantages
• The primary drawback to interior water drainage is
that it’s inside the home.  This means it is visible,
and occasionally will need to perform some
maintenance on it.
SUMP WELL

• A temporary pit which is

constructed to trap and filter water
for pumping into a suitable
discharge area. A perforated vertical
standpipe is placed in the center of
the pit to collect filtered water. The
purpose of this practice is to remove
excessive water in a manner that
improves the quality of the water
TERRACE WATERPROOFING

Terrace waterproofing is very

critical, as a roof is always
exposed to harsh weather
conditions, climatic changes
and rains. The terrace surface
tends to accumulate rain
water, which in due course
starts seeping inside the slab.
Over time, the deterioration
of the surface will increase;
leading to more damage.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROOF WATERPROOFING

1. BRICK BAT COBA

2. WATERPROOFING SOLUTION
3. WATERPROOFING SHEET
INSTALLATION FOR BRICK BAT COBA

• Fix in a slope of 1:150, starting from the lowest point of rainwater down take and by keeping a minimum
thickness of 65mm below the rainwater outlet.
• Fix brick bats in a cement mortar layer of 1:6 proportion in a slope of 1:150 with the waterproofing compound.
• Fix small pieces of brick bats along with 20mm metal for coving of watta(rounding) at the bottom of the parapet
wall
• Special care should be taken for achieving the round shape near the rainwater pipe.
• Block the rainwater outlet with gunny bags, to avoid cement slurry from entering it.
• Cure the brick bat coba coat for at least seven days.
• Spread cement mortar in 1:4 along with water-proofing compound over the brick bat coba.
• Apply thick cement slurry over the levelled surface, along with the water-proofing compound for a smooth
finish.
• Clean and cure the final coat for 21days with at least 150mm water standing on the waterproofing.
WATER TANK
Water tanks in large complexes and even in small homes,
are usually placed underground or overhead. Therefore
there is always, a chance that water may seep through the
common joints between the house and the tank, especially
if the tank is badly constructed, or simply not
waterproofed

Two ways to waterproof a water tank

• The conventional way is the application of cement slurry that will stop the leakage for the time being. It’s only a
temporary solution to waterproof the tank which is done to arrest the leakage from cracks & joints.
• The more economical and more effective solution involves a lot more work, but it is a long-lasting solution. It is
actually a two-step solution that is achieved by saturating the surface to be treated with a high performance
Polymer modified cement-based coating. The second step involves complete waterproof grouting of the
construction joints using a polymer modified mortar over the treated surface.
Different types of basement waterproofing methods

1. Interior sealants
• In poured concrete foundations, cracks and
pipe penetrations are the most common
entry points for seepage. These openings
can be sealed from the interior.

2. Interior water drainage

• A drainage system can help avoid water buildup in basement,
moving the water from the footers of the house foundation and out
below the basement floor. A common system for draining water
that has penetrated a basement involves creating a channel around
the perimeter of the basement alongside the foundation footers.
3. Foundation crack injections
• Foundation crack injections are used when poured
concrete foundations crack either from a settlement or
the expansion and contraction of the concrete. Epoxy
crack injections are typically used for structural
purposes while hydrophobic or hydrophilic
polyurethane injections are used to seal cracks to
prevent penetration of moisture or water.

4. Interior basement waterproofing

• Interior basement waterproofing using coatings is
effective where condensation is the main source of
wetness. It is also effective if the problem has minor
dampness. Installing a backwater valve is one of the most
effective measures to save your basement. Installing a
drainage system is the most complex solution for interior
waterproofing.
