Daily Lessons:
i. I AM the Bread of Life ( John 6 )
ii. I AM the Light of the World ( John 8 )

In these lessons, you will see the
different descriptions that Jesus used for
Himself and how He truly is the ONLY
WAY to be SAVED.
“I am the
Bread of Life”
John 6
What Is the "Bread of Life"?
Bread is one of the essential foods of many cultures all around the world; it is a staple in many diets, and for centuries it
would have been one of the most accessible foods for people of all wealth and social statuses.

At that point in history, especially in Jesus’ culture, bread would have been understood as a nutritional necessity. It also
has historical significance for the Jewish people, harkening back to God’s life-sustaining manna, which kept their people
alive in the desert. Jesus chose bread as His metaphor intentionally.

Salvation and a relationship with the Lord are not like a sweet treat – not necessary but enjoyable. It is not like meat,
which one can survive without but is important to a well-rounded diet in many circumstances.

Salvation is essential to human existence and necessary for eternity. When Jesus says He is the bread of life, He is saying
He is essential.

Just as God the Father provided nourishment, He was providing a path to redemption for mankind, separated from Him by
sin, through Jesus Christ. The Lord underscores that He is the way to this redemption by foreshadowing the crucifixion.
Without the crucifixion and the resurrection, the sins of the world remain unpaid, and mankind remains under the law.

As Paul would go on to explain, “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own
Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the
law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:3-4).
Why Is Jesus Called the 'Bread of Life’?
After Jesus feeds the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish, He tells them "I am the bread of life; whoever
comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst" (John 6:35). The bread of
life is not physical bread, but the bread of spiritual renewal found in the salvation of the blood of Jesus
Christ.

After feeding 5,000 men plus women and children, Jesus speaks to the crowd again, this time
offering them a different kind of bread, one that would never rot, and would always keep them full.
When the people ask for this bread, the Bible records, “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).

Figurative and literary language exists in many places in the Bible. From the poetry in the Psalms to
the parables of Jesus, imagery and metaphor are a part of how God speaks to the world in His
Word. It communicates heavenly concepts that are difficult to put into words, or is a way for the
Holy Spirit to speak to the soul, and provides concrete images to help individuals grasp abstract,
metaphysical, ideas.

The bread of life is not physical bread, but the bread of spiritual renewal found in the
salvation of the blood of Jesus Christ.
Why Is This Important?
Jesus identified Himself as the bread of life, the living water, and the way.
He did not present Himself a source of salvation but as the only way to
salvation. Without Him, without the bread of life, there is no hope for
salvation. By identifying Himself as the source of forgiveness, Jesus
makes the path to repentance and a relationship with God, plain, simple,
and available for everyone.

There are no additional sacrifices or works, “because if you confess with

your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). The bread of life
will sustain the believer.
Day 1 Activity:
“I am the Light of
the World”
John 8
What Does "Light of the World" Mean in the Bible?
In Jesus Christ's "Sermon on the Mount," he first preaches to His followers the Beatitudes,
of who shall be blessed by God, and then of salt and light. Here Christ tells them "You are
the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden...let your light shine before
others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in
heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)

Light of the World in Scripture

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no
longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the
world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your
light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (
Matthew 5:13-16)
We are called to be the salt and light in the world. But what does that mean?
Salt:
When salt is applied, it dissolves inward and disappears. The salt speaks of the inward part, the
character of the Christian.
Light
Jesus also described His people as being like light, which is on the outside. The light speaks of the
testimony of a follower of Christ, revealing and illuminating the truth.
You Are the Light of the World
Jesus was speaking to a crowd of just ordinary folks. Yet Christ said to them, "You are the light of
the world" (Matthew 5:14). Even today, you are the light of the world. That's how God intends to
get his work done on earth today: through you! It's not just pastors and missionaries who are the
light; it's everybody who loves the Lord.
How to Be the Light of the World
1. Share Your Faith in Christ
God takes an ordinary person and uses them to share His message to people who needed Him. When we share our
faith, we spread His light. You were saved to shine! Don't hide your testimony or be ashamed to take your Bible to
work. Don't be afraid to pray over your lunch at school. Let others know that you love the Lord Jesus.
2. Take Light Where It’s Dark
Jesus describes what we are in this passage - the light of the world, not the light of the church. That means we have
to get beyond the church walls and take the light out to where it is dark.
3. Shine Together as the Church
Jesus also talked of the strength of collective light. Each house in a city with its lights on cast a glow across the
sky. As Christians come together, there is a glow for the Lord that we cannot create individually. We shine brightest
when we shine together.
4. Live Surrendered to the Lord
How can we shine for God? Jesus says that we are to let our lights shine before men in such a way that they will
see our good works and glorify God (Matthew 5:16). That's how we do it. We live for God.
We have to surrender our lives to Him completely. Christ says we are to "let" our lights shine. In other words, when
you get right with God and are filled with the Holy Spirit, He will simply shine through you.
Day 1 Activity:
“I am the Good
Shepherd”
John 10
Why Was Jesus Called the Good Shepherd?
Although the title, Good Shepherd, is only found in the New Testament, Jesus was intentionally reaching
into the Old Testament with his words. By calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus was claiming to be the
Messiah that the scriptures foretold.

Jesus was called the Good Shepherd because he called himself the good shepherd in the Gospel
of John. His claim to this title is not casual by any means. In fact, Jesus’ claim to be the Good
Shepherd has a meaning that is both deep and wide.

Jesus the Good Shepherd: John 10

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is
not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the
sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because
he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep
and my sheep know me — just as the Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down
my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also.
They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my
Father loves me is that I lay down my life — only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I
lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This
command I received from my Father” (John 10:11-18).
The Good Shepherd: Biblically Foretold
Although the title, Good Shepherd, is only found in the New Testament, Jesus was intentionally
reaching into the Old Testament with his words. When Jesus claimed to be the good shepherd,
he was speaking to the Pharisees who claimed to know the scriptures.

The book of Ezekiel is a prophecy regarding shepherds and sheep. This prophecy is regarding
shepherds that were overseers for the people of God, and another shepherd that was to come
later. The shepherd to come later was the Messiah that Israel was waiting for.
By calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah that the scriptures
foretold.
Jesus’ claim to be the good shepherd is just one of seven other declarations regarding who he
was. There are seven times Jesus begins a statement with the words I am and claims a tile or
role. These are commonly called the I am statements.
The eighth time he refers to himself as I am is telling.
In John 8:58, he said, “Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am!” Only one other ever
referred to themselves as I am and that was God in Exodus 3:14. God said to Moses, “I AM
WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

By calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus was claiming to be the Almighty God.
Good Shepherd of Old Leadership

The prophecy in Ezekiel 34 was not kind to the overseer shepherds.

"Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them:
'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take
care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?

"'Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: ‘As surely as I live, declares the
Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has
become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my
flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock, therefore, you shepherds, hear
the word of the Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against the
shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from
tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my
flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.

By calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus was serving this prophecy to
the Pharisees.
Good Shepherd of New Leadership
The prophecy in Ezekiel 34 not only removed the wicked overseers but established a new rule.
For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after
them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my
sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and
darkness. I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I
will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the
ravines and in all the settlements in the land. I will tend them in a good pasture, and the
mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing
land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will tend my
sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. I will search for the lost and bring
back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong
I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice… Then they will know that I, the Lord their
God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.
You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign
Lord.
By calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus was establishing himself as the Savior and
new leader of Israel.
Good Shepherd for All Humanity
Jesus didn’t come to save Israel alone. He started with the lost sheep of
Israel, but it’s clear in the scriptures his reach went further.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me — just as

the Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down my life for the
sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them
also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one
shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life — only to
take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.
I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command
I received from my Father” (John 10:14-16).

When Jesus claimed to be the good shepherd, he called to anyone who

would listen to his voice.
