THE PROBLEM
INTRODUCTION
In today’s generation, high school is the time where many students begin to
use gateway drugs. The most common gateway drugs are cigarette,
marijuana and alcohol beverages. Some students are influenced to use drugs
by their friends and schoolmates. Their academic performance is affected by
numerous factor including gender, age, teaching faculty, students schooling,
father/ guardian, social economic status, what they consume, residential area
of students, medium of instructions in schools, tuition trend, daily study
hour, and accommodation as hostelries or day scholar (Idoko et. al, 2015).
INTRODUCTION
The use of drugs is one of the problems in school, which has a major effect to the
students. The use of illegal substances or drugs persists through high school, senior
high school and even up to college, increasing their risk for drug abuse.Alcohol is
one of the most widely used or abused substances among students of all ages. The
National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) states that underage
alcohol consumption may have negative effects on the brain’s development and
alter its structure and function. As a result, learning problems may arise and
student’s academic performance will be less than optimal. And this can lead
students having a failing grade, high absence rate and memory problems that may
result to direct consequence to their school performance.
INTRODUCTION
Marijuana also considered as the most used and abused drugs. Tobacco use can
cause more than just medical complications down the road. Everyday use of
tobacco can negatively impact your most important role: being a successful
student. According to the Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium, Students who
smoke have higher rates of respiratory infections and asthma as well as a higher
incidence of bacterial meningitis, especially among freshman living in dorms.
Having a serious health complication in college could prevent students from being
able to do their best in school. Also, it is stated that students who use tobacco are
shown to have lower GPA’s than those who do not use tobacco, and the use of
marijuana can reduce the capacity of a one person or student in learning and their
memory.
INTRODUCTION
Students who regularly smoked marijuana also had lower educational outcomes
and were less likely to graduate than those who didn’t smoke marijuana. It is
important that students do not neglect learning just to waste money for some drugs.
This research aims to find out the perceptions of senior high school students of
Colegio de Calumpit S.Y. 2019-2020 on the effects of using gateway drugs to their
academic performance.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general question to be answered in the study is: What are the
perceptions of the Senior High School students of Colegio de Calumpit
S.Y. 2019-2020 on the effects of using gateway drugs in academic
performance?
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Specifically, it will seek to answer to the following questions:
1. How may the profile of the student respondents be described in terms of the
following:
1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Strand; and
1.4 Religion
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
2. What are the bad effects that gateway drugs can cause on students’
academic performance?
3. What are the common problems of students who are involved in gateway
drugs?
4. How do students avoid using gateway drugs?
5. Is there a great significant relationship between using gateway drugs and
academic performance?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following:
Students. The students would know the possible effect towards their
performances in school and how it would affect both them and the performance.
The results of the study will help the students understand the effects of their
actions.
Parents. They would know consequences beforehand and therefore could bring
awareness and notify their children for the possible result and outcome of their
actions.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Teachers. This study will open the minds of the teachers for them to be more
aware of the effects of using gateway drugs in their academic performance. This
could make them think of other ways to lecture their students to avoid using
gateway drugs.
School Administration. This Research will help the school administration in
becoming aware that some students are using gateway drugs thus helping them to
develop intervention strategies.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Future researchers. The results of this study would serve as a springboard for
other researchers who might be interested with the same problem, area, or
discipline. They might find relevant ideas and relationships in the course of their
review of this study. Furthermore, it would hope to give them a basis on effects of
using gateway drugs to the academic performance of the students.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study is delimited to 200 Senior High School students of Colegio de

Calumpit (2018-2019). The participants will be selected from every section of
senior high school student. Descriptive Method will be used by the researchers to
gather appropriate information about the topic.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

According to Murphy (2018) “Strength and Weaknesses of Descriptive Research”,

the advantages of descriptive research is being able provide an in-depth view on
the topic of the research. It can also form valuable information and new research
questions to the researcher. The respondents will be selected through random
sampling, the researchers believe that this is the appropriate sampling method to be
used. Finally, questionnaires and unstructured interview will be used to collect data
from the respondents mentioned above.
