BIRTH AND EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
 Sir Michael John Hopkins was born on the 7th of May 1935 in Poole,
Dorset – England, into a working-class family.
 Sir Hopkins was educated at Sherborne School in Dorset. After which

he proceeded to study at the Bournemouth Art Architecture School
before undergoing his architectural training at the Architectural
Association in London(1962)
 He was trained in architecture during the times when people

needed to be housed following the effects of the World Wars. In
fact, most of his tutors had fought in the war and by effect passed on
their ambitions onto their students.

TRAINING
 Sir Michael Hopkins was trained during the post war

Syllabus era.
 Thus, the education system was more pre-occupied

Village  However, this could have been seen as a blessing in
disguise as the students had liberty of design.

4th year: Cities  The time period was one of change. New music was

course, the bombed ruins were cleared to give rise to
new spaces allowing the younger generation at the
time to have liberty of imagination in design.
 Notably, Sir Norman Foster was in the jury which

ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE
 In 1962, Sir Michael Hopkins married Lady

Patricia Ann Hopkins, who studied at the
Architectural Association with him.
 For their honeymoon, they took up a project

from the Society of Protection of Ancient
Buildings to restoration of a building in
Cratfield, Suffolk.
 This building is known as the Town House.
 It was located next to a church built in 1547

and was intended to house the meeting rooms
and host the early day festivities for the church
folk following the passing of an act forbidding
these festivities from happening in the
churches.

 COMPLETED PROJECT.
 This house, located in Hampstead – North London,
was constructed between 1975 & 1976.
 It is said to be one of the most “Architecturally

Significant” Homes in the previous century.
 It is a steel frame house design with multiple THE HOPKINS HOUSE

window glazes.
 The structure was used as both a home and the first

office space for the company, Hopkins Architects,
which both he and his wife started together.

HOPKINS HOUSE DESCRIPTION
 The building was designed as a machine for both living and working in.
 It was a simple two-storey glass and steel box, with few permanent inte
rior partitions; only occasional plastic panels for privacy of the bathrooms
and sleeping areas.
 The steel frame structure is left clearly visible.
 The house is reached from the street by a 'drawbridge' entering at the

first-floor level. As such, the house appears to be only one floor in height
from the street.
 It easily gained planning permission because the site was already ex
pected to have a much larger four-storey building developed at that spot.
 Defying convention, there was nothing to physically distinguish the

workspace from the living areas, other than the fact the family generally
stayed on the ground floor and the work was carried out above.

GREENE KING BEER CELLAR DESCRIPTION
 Greene King PLC intended to design a facility that

eased the production process of the beer which they
produced.
 It was designed to have 3 parts to it:

I. the first face where the empty barrels would be
offloaded and cleaned.
II. In the middle, these barrels would be filled with the

newly produced beer.
III. In the last phase, on the opposite side of the building,

the filled barrels would be offloaded and prepared for
distribution.
 The structure is raised by 1.25 metres due to the site

being prone to flooding
