Introduction
The belt or ropes are used to Transmit power from one
shaft to another by means of pulley which rotate at the
same speed or at different Speeds.
A Belt is a looped strip of flexible material, used to
mechanically link two or more rotating shafts. Belts are
looped over pulleys.

Types of Belt
▪ Drive
Light Drive:- Used to Transmit small power at the speeds
upto about 10 m/s. Agricultural machines & small machine
tool.
▪ Medium Drive:- Used to Transmit at the speeds Over 10
m/s but upto 22m/s. Machine Tools.
▪ Heavy Drive:-Used to Transmit Large power at the speeds
upto Above 22 m/s. Compressor and generator.
Flat
belt
The flat belt mostly used in the factories and
workshop. where a moderate amount of power to be
transmitted, from one pulley to another when the two
pulley are not more than 8 meters apart.

Belt
The V- Belt mostly used in the factories and
workshop, where a moderate amount of power to be
transmitted, from one pulley to another when the two
pulley are Very near to Each other.
Types of Belt
Drives
1. Open belt drive.
2. Crossed or Twisted belt
drive.
3. Compound Belt Drive.
Open belt
drive
In an open belt drive, the belt proceeds from the top of one
pulley to the top of another pulley without crossing. In crossed
belt drive, the belt proceeds from the top of one pulley to the
bottom of the other pulley and thus crosses itself. In open belt
drive, the driving shaft and driven shaft rotate in the same
direction.
Crossed or twist belt
drive
In a cross belt drive, the belt moves from the top of one pulley to
the bottom of another pulley.
Since only one inner portion of the belt can wrap or touch the
pulley, the belt needs to bend 180 ° between the driver and the
driven shaft. There are two such turns for every rotation of the
belt.
Compound belt
drive A compound belt drive is used when power is
transmitted from one shaft to another through a
number of pulleys.
Applications
1) Belt drive are use in Mill Industry.
2) Belt drive are use in Conveyor.
3) pepper grinding machine.
4) Sewing machines.
5) Sawmills.
6) Printing presses.
7) Punch presses.
Rope Drive
Rope drive is referred to as a simplified form of a
belt drive, which is most commonly found having
the application of power transmission
mechanically. Rope drives are found performing
multiple use of circular section ropes instead of
the single flats or V-belts. The rope drives are the
ones which are widely used where ever there
seems to be a large amount of power that needs to
be transmitted, from one pulley to another for
any particular considerable distance.
Advantages of Rope Drive
• High flexibility and Wear resistance.
• Better crushing resistance.
• Higher strength as compared to round strand.
• Less resistance of the bending fatigue.
• Reduction of mechanical stress on the rope as
well as the sheave
• Less damages
• Significant Cost Reduction.
Application of rope Drive
1) It is used in spinning mill.
2)The rope drive is used in lift in multistorage
building.
3) Elevators.
4)Mine hoists, cranes, conveyors, hauling devices
and suspension bridges.
Chain
Drives
In belt and rope drives that slipping may occur. In order to
avoid slipping, steel chains are used. The chains are made up
of rigid links which are hinged together in order to provide the
necessary flexibility for warping around the driving and driven
wheels. The wheels have projecting teeth and fit into the
corresponding recesses, in the links of the chain. The wheels
and the chain are thus constrained to move together without
slipping and ensures perfect velocity ratio. The toothed wheels
are known as sprocket wheels or simply sprockets.
Selection of Roller Chain Drives
The following data should be taken into consideration
while selecting roller chain drives.
▪ Horsepower to be transmitted
▪ RPM of the driving and driven sprocket(Speed
ratio)
▪ Load classification
▪ Space limitations if any
▪ Driven machine
▪ Source of power
Application of chain
drive:
▪ Chain drive used for transmission of power.
▪ It is used for lifting loads and also used to
carry material.
▪ This is also used in woodworking machinery.
▪ Transportation Industry.
▪ Agriculture Machinery.
▪ Material Handling Equipment.
▪ Building construction.
