Circular Permutation

The document discusses different formulas for calculating permutations and combinations in circular arrangements. It provides formulas to calculate the permutation of objects arranged in a circle, arranged in a circle with a fixed reference point, arranged as beads in a ring without a clasp, and arranged as beads in a ring with a clasp. It also gives examples of problems involving circular permutations and their solutions.

Find the number of different ways that a family of 6
members be seated around a circular table with 6
chairs.

Ans:
In how many ways can 10 different beads in a bracelet
with clasp be arranged? How about if without clasp?

Ans:
Ans:
In how many ways can Joy, Rey, Peter, John , Bhong,
Rex, Paul, be arranged in circular manner if there is a
post between Paul and Peter?

Ans:
Solving
Problems
involving
permutations
Steps to consider in solving problems:

1. Read and understand the problem.

2. Highlight clue words like together,
round, repetitions,etc.
3. Consider the clue word and recall the
formula in solving the given problem.
1.There are 9 fruits in a basket, 3 mangoes, 2 apples and 4 oranges. In
how many ways can all
these fruits be eaten?
Ans: =1260
2. Mariwen, Kyle, Lyra, Bernadeth, Marissa and Alex are arranged in a
row for picture taking. If Lyra, Bernadeth and Marissa must always be
together, how many arrangement are possible?
Ans: 6P4= 360
3. In how many ways can 7 students be arrnged in a circular manner if
there is a post between the 2 students?
Ans: P=n!=7!=5040
Combination

Combination is a way of grouping things
where the order is not important . It is a
selection of things from a set without
regard to order.
Difference between Permutation and
Combination

In Permutation, the order of elements
is important. However, in forming
collections or arrangements, order is
sometimes not important. A collection
of objects for which order is not
important is called Combination.
Try:
Determine whether the statements describes permutation or
combination.

2. Forming lines from six given points with no
three of which are collinear.
3. Forming triangles from 7 given points with
no three of which are collinear.
4. Four people posing for pictures.
Combination as defined in the previous discussions is an arrangement of objects without reference to order in which
they are arranged.
The number of possible combinations of r objects from a collection of n objects is given by the formula,
n!
n Cr  , where 0  r  n.

n
n Cr ; Cr ; C  n, r  ; Cn , r ;   ;
