Understanding
media: Aesthetics
of New Media
LET US
RECALL ‘NEW
MEDIA’
NEW MEDIA
-serves to distinguish the use of technology
in relation to imagery and sound from media
in their traditional forms.
-2 forms: web-based apps via laptops/PCs
and mobile apps via smartphones/tablets.
NEW MEDIA
TECHNOLOGY
The traditional single lens reflex (SLR)
film-loaded camera before is now digital
(DSLR). In films and TV Industry,
mainstream production studios were
rent. Now, we have high definition (HD)
digital cameras to shoot movies or TV
shows, easier to edit and distribute.
Streaming
-pertains to real-time
consuming of media content as
it is currently being delivered.
In music, people used to buy CDs,
but now we can easily access music
through downloading or sharing
from one gadget to another.
However, it is illegal. It is called
piracy.
NEW MEDIA
-is also interactive.
-Ex. Wikipedia is an online
community-driven project you
could sign up and contribute or
edit content.
AS A MULTIMEDIA
A smartphone has a multifunction.
Multimedia also refers to the way multiple
types of media could be created, stored,
and transferred via digital technology or the
Internet.
Media playback and distribution systems
are not only on music. iTunes now has the
capacity to make movies and TV series.
Media conglomerate were previously
known as the big media company, one media
company could own smaller companies that
produce different types of media. (Walt
Disney).
SYNERGY
-A film company could sell original
soundtracks, books or comic versions of the
film, and even merchandise.
-maximizing the economic opportunities within
its conglomerate.
-crosses over non media platforms (fast food
chain tie ups, toy manufacturer or fashion retail
tie-ups). It will now be a media franchise.
In this age, synergy becomes
far-reaching as the existence
of a specific media product
gets enhanced exposure
online.
TRANSMEDIA
-In film, there could be spin-offs in a form of
graphic novel or comic series on the web.
-These are stories that unfold across multiple
media platforms, with each medium making
distinctive contributions to our understanding of
the world. For instance, Pokemon Universe,
Nintendo, etc
•WWW
•-WORLD WIDE WEB
•HTML
•-Hyper Text Markup Language
•URL
•-Uniform Resource Locator
•HTTP
•-Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
The World Wide Web is a service
operating over the Internet that enables
enormous volumes of content to be
available by providing three key functions:
a publishing format, Hyper Text Markup
Language (HTML), an address for each
piece of information, Uniform Resource
Locator (URL), and a means of
transferring information, through the Hyper
Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
GATEKEEPER

-anyone who has the role of filtering ideas and

information for publication or broadcasting.
-the internal decision-making process of relaying or
withholding information from the media to the
masses.
ONLINE JOURNALS
When a news reporter submits a
controversial story, it might put the
newspaper company in trouble. Which is
why we have blogs—a website, usually
maintained by one person, where he or
she posts commentary, descriptions of
events, pictures or videos. Ex. Twitter
PODCAST
Broadcast is from radio or television, but if it is
through the internet, it is called a podcast. It also
defines as audio and video media files that are
released periodically and may be listened to
podcast on devices such as the computer and
smartphones. In YouTube, we can post videos,
like vlogs or documentaries.
Media Add
theorists have identified
a Timeline Page
two types of audiences living in
the digital age: digital native
means those who are familiar with
the Internet since childhood, and
digital immigrants who came
lately to the Internet.
