Variation

Here are two examples of direct and inverse variation that I will present through video: Direct variation: Cooking time vs amount of food. As I increase the amount of food I'm cooking, the cooking time will increase proportionally. Inverse variation: Number of family members vs amount of food leftovers. As the number of family members eating a meal decreases, the amount of leftovers will increase inversely. I will film short videos demonstrating these two examples and explain how they represent direct and inverse variation based on the relationships between the varying quantities. The content will clearly illustrate the key aspects of each type of variation. I aim to present the concepts in an engaging yet simple way to help demonstrate my understanding.

Objectives
illustrate situations that involve the following variations:
(a) direct; (b) inverse.
translate into variation statement a relationship between
two quantities given by: (a) a table of values; (b) a
mathematical equation; (c) a graph, and vice versa.
solve problems involving variation.

3.What do you observe about the ratio of ?
Direct Variation
Direct Variation
The value of y varies directly with the value of x if there exists a nonzero
constant k such that
y= kx or equivalently .
The constant k is called the constant of variation.
Writing the formula/ equation.
Example 1: Write the equation for the statement “A varies directly as
S”.

A = kS
Example 2: Write in symbols: The area A of a circle varies directly
as the square of the radius r.

A=k
Writing the formula/ equation.
Example 3: a is proportional to the cube root of b.

𝑎=𝑘 ∛ 𝑏
TRY IT! C varies directly as three- fourth. c=

D is proportional to the square root of 16. D

The square of a varies directly as the sum of c 2
and d.
𝑎 =𝑘(𝑐 + 𝑑)
Solving Direct Variation.
Example 1: If y varies directly as x, and y is 15 when x = 3, find y if
x = 5.

y = kx
Solve for k. Find y if x = 5.
y = 15 x=3 k=5 x=5
y = kx y = kx

Solving Direct Variation.
Example 2: If y varies directly as x, and y is when x = 2, find y if x
= 6.

y = kx
Solve for k. Find y if x = 6.
y= x=2 k= x=6
y = kx 2 = 6k y = kx

Example 3: A worker’s pay check P varies directly as the number of
hours h worked. For working 20hrs, the payment is ₱1 000.00. Find
the payment for 45 hrs of work.

P = payment P = kh Find P if h = 45.

h = hours P= 1 000 h = 20 k = 50 h = 45

P = kh P = kh
P =(50) (45)

The number of selling products directly proportional to profit.
The income is directly proportional to working hours.
The battery power is inversely proportional to time for which it
used.
Let's say a family husband is working, so if more people works in
family, more income for the family. It is an example of
direct variation.
If family has less members, more saving (provided that the family has
the same amount of income). More members, less saving ( income is
still the same). It is an inverse variation.
