FAMILY

PLANNING
WHAT IS FAMILY
PLANNING?
According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), family planning is
defined as "the ability of individuals and
couples to anticipate and attain their
desired number of children and the
spacing and timing of their births.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF
FAMILY PLANNING?
Family planning allows people to attain
their desired number of children, if any,
and to determine the spacing of their
pregnancies. It is achieved through use of
contraceptive methods and the treatment
of infertility.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT
TYPES OF FAMILY PLANNING
METHODS?
Methods of contraception include oral
contraceptive pills, implants, injectables, patches,
vaginal rings, intra uterine devices, condoms, male
and female sterilization, lactational amenorrhea
methods, withdrawal and fertility awareness-based
methods.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS
FAMILY PLANNING
METHODS?
How effective natural family planning is. If natural
family planning methods are used according to
instructions, they can be up to 99% effective. This
means that 1 out of 100 women using natural
family planning correctly will get pregnant. It
takes commitment and practice to use natural
family planning this effectively...
WHAT ARE THE 6
FAMILY PLANNING
METHODS?
1.LONG-ACTING
REVERSIBLE
CONTRACEPTION-THE
IMPLANT OR INTRA
• An intrauterine device
UTERINE DEVICE (IUD) (IUD) is a piece of T-
shaped plastic, about the size of a quarter, that is
placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
Two types of IUDs are available: one is covered
with copper, the other releases the hormone
progestin.
2.HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION-
THE PILL OR THE DEPO
PROVERA INJECTION
• Hormonal contraception refers to birth
control methods that act on the endocrine
system. Almost all methods are
composed of steroid hormones, although
in India one selective estrogen receptor
modulator is marketed as a contraceptive.
3.BARRIER METHODS-
CONDOMS
● Barrier methods help prevent pregnancy by blocking sperm from
entering the uterus.

Examples of barrier methods include external condoms, internal

condoms, diaphragm, cervical cap and sponges. They are inserted
into the vagina before sex and must be used every time you have sex.
4.EMERGENCY
CONTRACEPTION
• Emergency contraception (EC) can prevent up to
over 95% of pregnancies when taken within 5 days
after intercourse.
• EC can be used in the following situations:
unprotected intercourse, concerns about possible
contraceptive failure, incorrect use of
contraceptives, and sexual assault if without
contraception coverage.
5.FERTILITY
AWARENESS
• Fertility awareness methods (FAMs)
are ways to track your menstrual cycle
and fertile days so you can prevent
pregnancy. FAMs are also called
"natural family planning" and "the
rhythm method."
6.PERMANENT
CONTRACEPTION -
VASECTOMY AND TUBAL
• Sterilization is a permanent form of birth control that is
ligation
extremely effective at preventing pregnancy. But it is difficult to
reverse if you change your mind, and it does not protect against
STDs. Both men and women can be sterilized. For women, a
tubal ligation is performed; for men, a vasectomy is performed
DANGER OF FAMILY
PLANNING
• The necessity of taking medications
continuously.
• Some methods and birth control pills have side
effects and might increase health risks.
• The cost of medications and devices used.
• Risk of pelvic inflammatory diseases.
