The document discusses a methanol to gasoline (MTG) plant in New Zealand. The plant comprises two large steam reformers that each produce 2,500 tons per day of crude methanol. Rather than purifying the methanol for export, it is converted to DME and then gasoline and LPG in fixed-bed reactors. The crude gasoline is fractionated and hydrotreated to produce gasoline for immediate use by blending it with light gasoline. The MTG process is optimized to maximize gasoline production, though it increases the amount of durene in the product to around 4-5%.

Aep Riyadi Goffar Utomo Ragil Priyanto METHANOL TO GASOLINE (MTG) Configuration • The MTG plant in New Zealand comprises two large steam reformers and methanol synthesis units, each with a capacity of 2,500 t/d of methanol. • Because the intention was to convert the methanol into gasoline, the crude methanol produced was not purified to chemical grade methanol, which would have been suitable for export. • The crude methanol is then converted to DME, which helps energy management in the downstream reactors, and then into gasoline and LPG in fixed-bed converters. • LPG is used to fuel the steam reformers. • The operation of the MTG converters is then optimized to maximize the quantity of the gasoline produced. • However, it also tended to increase the amount of durene (1,2,4,5-tetramethyl benzene) to about 4% or 5% in the product. • The crude gasoline from the MTG converters was fractionated. This hydrotreated product was added to the light gasoline to produce a gasoline for immediate use. 2 3 4 5 MTG GASOLINE PROPERTIES
