WHAT IS NUTRITION?

Nutrition
• Is the area of health that focuses on
making food choices that will promote
growth and development and reduce the
risk of diseases and illness.
WHAT IS THE NUTRITION STATUS OF
FILIPINO ADOLESCENTS?

• World Health Organization (WHO)


- Adolescence as period of transition between
childhood to adulthood, ages 10-19 often related to
puberty.
• Based on the FRNI results of 6th National Nutrition Survey ,
the nutritional status of Filipino adolescents shows that:
Among adolescents 11-12 years old:
-49 in every 100 have normal weight for their
height
- 26 in every 100 are overweight
- 4 in every 100 are overweight.
Among adolescence 13-19 years old:
- 68 in every 100; have normal weight for their height
- 12 in every 100 are underweight
- 3 in every 100 are overweight
More males 11-12 and 13-19 years are underweight than
females.
More 11-12 year old males are overweight than females
While more females age 13 -19 years are overweight then
- males of the same ages
- the prevalence of underweight adolescents
- Increased between 1993 and 1998 but
declined in 2003
WHAT ARE THE NUTRITION
CONCERNS OF ADOLESCENTS?

• Skipping breakfast
• Poor selection of foods eaten during
meals /lunch
• Poor snacking
• Practice of fad diets to lose weight
• Eating disorders
WHY ARE ADOLESCENCE
UNDERNOURISHED?
• Poor eating habits
• Poor food choices and intakes because of peers and media
• Too conscious of the kinds and amount of food they eat
• School canteens or cafeterias serve less nutritious food
• Low intake of iron and vitamin C foods
• Skipping breakfast and poor meals
WHAT ARE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF
MALNUTRI TION AMONG ADOLESCENTS
• Delay in growth and development
• Poor performance in school
• Being sluggish and gets tired easily
• Delay in the onset of secondary sex charecteristics
• Poor nutrition in adulthood
