Approaches to ethics
Akhlaq (Morality) and Adab (Manners) in Islam
Akhlaq (Arabic: ‫ )أخالق‬is an Arabic term referring to character and the practice of
virtue, morality and manners in Islamic theology and falsafah (philosophy).

The term akhlaq refers to inner attributes of human being formed into
habits and characteristics. The sources of akhlaq are the al-Qur'an and the
al-Sunnah, Akhlaq is the most appropriate term to describe the ethics of a
Muslim
Akhlaq is related with your personality. When you keep doing something
repeatedly you start doing it at spinal level, becomes your reflex action. It may
be your intelligence, anger, desire or imagination.
• Akhlaq which is the combination of balance between the spiritual and
physical elements become primary basis in the formation of a Muslim ethic.
• Muslim professional are bound to the concept of relationships with Allah
(habl min Allah), relationships with other people (habl min al-nas) and the
relationship with the environment either it is intrinsic or extrinsic in each of
their behaviours and actions.
• These three relationships will produce the ethical values of Muslim
entrepreneurs including piety (taqwa), compassion (ihsan), trust (amanah)
and others.
Prophet Muhammad has said: "Indeed I have been sent to complete the best of
character (akhlaq)."
Anas, the brother of Abu Dharr is narrated as saying: "I saw him (the Prophet), he
would enjoin the people to good character and conduct." The Prophet also said, :

• In the Qur˒an the term is used to refer to the prophet Muhammad's exemplary
ethical character (68:4).
• The Qur˒an also emphasizes the significance of ethically guided action as the
underpinning for a committed Muslim life.
• Qur˒anic ethics emphasize in particular the dignity of the human being,
accountability, justice, care and compassion, stewardship of society and the
environment, and the obligation to family life and values. Faith and ethics are
thus intertwined in the Qur˒an and linked further to the Prophet as a moral
exemplar.
Akhlaq is the implementation of the ethical
values that guided by the philosophy of
tawheed / taqwa

The goal in Islamic ethics / akhlaq is to achieve taqwa, virtuous character,

through practice of religious and moral virtues that are all based on a sense
of right and wrong given as a trust to mankind
Adab
Adab, in the context of behavior, refers to prescribed Islamic etiquette: "refinement,
good manners, morals, decorum, decency, humaneness".

Adab is more of an action and how people perceive you as having good morals, it is
related to etiquette, and behavior, rather than an emotional act.

On the surface, they appear to be referring to the same thing (i.e., good character,
manners and morals). Are the two terms actually synonymous, or do they have
different applications?

Akhlaq is about morals (which are not physical) and abilities of soul. Akhlaq is
morals that one has used to have them and has became the structure of his
personality and usually are hard to change.

But Adab is about body and how to use body regarding others. For example greed
or pride is included in Akhlaq and how to sit or talk your mother is included in
Adab.
