Calculate Pipe Diameter & Velocity
1. Provide estimated flow rate
2. Provide estimated pipe length
3. Provide maximum allowable pressure drop (refer to EIEPD Design Criteria)
4. Convert to head loss

5. Specify pipe material

Equations involve:

● Volumetric Flow Rate

● Reynold’s Number

● Colebrook Equation

● Darcy Weisbach
Calculate Internal Working Pressure
1. Can use simulation or calculation to determine internal hydrostatic pressure gauge
2. If there is any significant changes in temperature etc., may need to consider

Calculate Pipe Schedule

Using rule of thumb expression:

where,

● P = internal working pressure, psig

● S = allowable stress (psi) for material
Calculate Thickness
1. From the calculated diameter and pipe schedule, find the nearest NPS
2. Calculate the required thickness, and compare with pipe standard
3. If thickness from pipe standard less than required thickness, may need to change NPS
and recalculate
4. Reconfirm velocity to make sure it is within allowable velocity

Design thickness: Safe nominal thickness:

where, where,

● D = outside diameter (mm) ● A = sum of allowance (refer ASME B31.4)

● Pint = internal gauge pressure (bar) ● tn = safe nominal wall thickness
● S = allowable stress (Mpa) ● t = design wall thickness

where,

● E = weld joint factor

● F = design factor, shall not be greater than 0.72
● Sy = minimum yield strength (MPa)
