Interconnection Between Networks

The document discusses different types of two-port network interconnections including cascade, series, and parallel. It provides the equations to calculate the ABCD, Z, and Y parameters for a two-port network that results from cascading, connecting in series, or connecting in parallel two individual two-port networks. Examples are given of calculating the output parameters for networks connected in series and parallel using the individual network parameters.

 There are various types of interconnections possible for two-

port networks, namely, cascade, parallel, series, series-parallel
and parallel-series.

 We will concentrate on the relation between the input and

output quantities of the cascaded, series and parallel two-port
networks only.
Cascaded connection
5
In the cascade connection, the output port of the first network becomes the input
port of the second network. Since it is assumed that input and output currents
are positive when they enter the network, we have
I1 ′ = – I 2

The ABCD parameters for the two networks are

From the diagram, V1b = V2a and I1′ = – I2 , Substituting this in the matrix we get

6
So

If

Then

Or
Series connection
7  In a series connection, both the networks carry, the same input current and their output currents are also
equal.

In this resultant Z-parameter matrix for the series-connected networks is the sum of Z matrices of each
individual two-port network.
 For network Na

8 ,

 For network Nb

 Also the currents are equal i.e

 For the combined network

 So for the combined network, the Z parameters are
9

 And hence

 Or for series network

Parallel connection
10  In the parallel connection, the two networks have the same input voltages
and the same output voltages

 This can be redrawn as

 For network Na

11 ,

 For network Nb

 Also the Voltages are equal and the total current is the sum of individual currents, i.e

 For the combined network

 So for the combined network, the Y parameters are
12

 And hence

 Or for parallel network
