INTENSIVE REVIEW
By Mr. Patrick B. Canto
SHS Teacher
A body is said to be in motion (or moving) when
it is position changes continuously with respect
to a stationary object taken as reference point.
The study of motion is kinematics, but
kinematics only the way objects m describes ove
their — velocity and their acceleration.
Dynamics considers the forces that affect the
motion of moving objects and systems. Newton’s
laws of motion are the foundation of dynamics. s

LAW OF ACCELERATION

Newton’s second law as a simple equation giving the exact

relationship of force, mass, and acceleration.
LAW OF ACCELERATION

• The unit of acceleration in the SI system is

the meter/second (m/s2 ).
• The SI unit for mass is the kilogram (kg).
• The SI unit of force is called the Newton (N).

called activity. Power is a scalar quantity.

POWER
power is the amount of energy transferred or converted per unit time.

equal to one joule per second. In older works, power is sometimes
called activity. Power is a scalar quantity.
Power
Energy
Energy is defined as the “ability to do work, which is
the ability to exert a force causing displacement of an
object.” Despite this confusing definition, its meaning is
very simple: energy is just the force that causes things to
move. Energy is divided into two types: potential and
kinetic.
Mechanical Energy
Mechanical energy (kinetic energy or potential energy)
is the energy of either an object in motion or the energy
that is stored in objects by their position. Mechanical
energy is also a driver of renewable energy. Many forms
of renewable energy rely on mechanical energy to
adequately produce power or convert energy.
Mechanical Energy
Mechanical Energy consists of two types
of energy - the kinetic energy (energy of motion)
and the potential energy (stored energy of
position)
Potential Energy
The most common type of potential
energy (U) is gravitational potential
energy, which is calculated based on the
mass of the object (m), the gravitational
acceleration constant (g), and the height
above the ground (h). The potential
energy formula is U=mgh
Kinetic Energy
It is the energy of motion, observable as the
movement of an object or subatomic
particle. Every moving object and particle
have kinetic energy. A person walking, a
soaring baseball, a crumb falling from a
table and a charged particle in an electric
field are all examples of kinetic energy at
work.
Problem Solving!!!
A jogger whose mass is 60kg is moving at a speed
of 3 m/s. What is the jogger’s Kinetic Energy?
Juan running on the beach with his dad. Juan has a mass of 40 kg and is
running at a velocity of 1 m/s. How much kinetic energy does he have?
What about Juan’s dad? His mass is 80 kg, and he’s running at the same
velocity as Juan (1 m/s). Because his mass is twice as great as Juan’s, his
kinetic energy is twice as great:

A 60 N skateboarder starts from rest at the top of a ramp,
which is 20 meters high. If the skateboarder descends the
ramp with negligible friction, calculate the kinetic energy
of the skateboarder when reaching the bottom in 15
seconds.
A full roller coaster car has a mass of 4200 kg and is heading down a
drop at 55 m/s. What is the kinetic energy of the coaster car?
