INTRODUCTION

 People communicate their mental states, such as emotions, thoughts, and desires,
through facial expressions, vocal nuances, and gestures.

 A mind-reading machine combines principles of human psychology with computer

techniques.

 Various equipment gathers data, which is then analyzed. Using this data for further
prediction is referred to as the "Theory of Mind Reading."
WHAT IS MIND READING?

 Drawing on insights from psychology, computer vision, and machine learning,

advancements have led to the development of mind-reading machines.

 These systems utilize digital video cameras to analyze facial expressions in real-
time, allowing for the inference of a person's underlying mental state.

 By combining prior knowledge of how specific mental states manifest in facial

expressions with real-time analysis of these expressions and head gestures, these
systems can make accurate assessments.

 Software such as NEVEN VISION is employed to identify 24 key feature points on

the face and track them in real-time, enabling precise analysis and interpretation of
facial expressions.
WHY MIND READING?

 Imagine a future where our technology seamlessly integrates with our mental states,
much like how keyboards and mice present text and commands. Picture mobile
phones, cars, and online services that can read our minds and respond to our mood.

 We're exploring the potential of mind-reading technology to enhance online

shopping and learning systems.

 Furthermore, these systems could monitor and offer suggestions to improve human-
human interactions, revolutionizing the way we communicate and collaborate.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

Futuristic Headband
 Mind reading involves measuring the volume and oxygen level of the blood around
the subject's brain using a technology called functional near-infrared spectroscopy
(fNIRS).
CONTINUED……

 Measuring mental workload, frustration, and distraction has traditionally relied on

qualitative observation of computer users.

 NASA has developed a computer program capable of silently interpreting spoken words by
analyzing nerve signals in the mouth and throat.

 Biological signals are generated when reading or speaking to oneself, with or without visible
lip or facial movements.

 In a 2011 study, researchers successfully translated brain waves into the movie clips people
were watching at the time.

 In 2014, two scientists established a brain-to-brain link, enabling the transmission of

thoughts between them. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that computers can discern
the content of dreams based solely on brain activity.

WEB SEARCH

 In the initial sensor test, scientists trained the program to recognize six words, including
"go," "left," and "right," along with 10 numbers.

 Next, researchers organized the letters of the alphabet into a matrix, with each column and
row labeled with a single-digit number.

 Using this setup, individuals were able to silently spell out "NASA" by selecting the
appropriate letters from the matrix, which was then input into a web search engine using
the program.
TECHNIQUES

 Facial Effect Detection

It is done using hidden Markov Model, Neural Network Model or Active Appearance
Model.
CONTINUED……

 Emotional Classification
Classification by Paul Ekman Anger, Fear, Happiness, Disgust,
Sadness, Surprise.
CONTINUED…..

 Facial Electromyography
It is used to measure electrical activity of the facial muscles. Muscles
used are “corrugator supercilii muscle” and others.
CONTINUED…..

 Galvanic Skin Response

It is a measure of Skin conductivity, which is dependent on how
moist the skin is.
CONTINUED…..

 Blood Volume Pulse

a) It is measured by process called photoplethysmography.
b) It produces a graph indicating blood flow through the
extremities.
APPLICATIONS

 Mind-Reading Computers could ‘save your life’.

 Control robots by brain power.

 Emergency

 Mind-Reading Computer that could communicate with coma patient.

 A mind controlled wheel chair developed from the university of

electro-communications in japan.
ADVANTAGES AND USES

 Can read minds.

 Help paralytic patients.

 Help comma patients.

 Help people who cant speak.

 Can be used for military field and sting operation.

 Eliminate the capability of lie.

DISADVANTAGES AND PROBLEMS

 Breach in privacy.

 Can extract, through an individual, an important secure and confidential

information of individual, state or even a country.

 If developed or used by sinners, can be highly dangerous.

 No way to neutralize this technology.

 Eavesdropping.
CONCLUSION

 Tufts University researchers have initiated a three-year research project aimed at

enabling computers to respond to the brain activity of their users.

 IBM asserts that mind reading is no longer confined to science fiction and predicts
the development of mind-reading computers within the next five years.
