• In addition, the F/D has 2 sliding windows
that can be used as emergency escape by
the flight crew.

These doors may be opened

from either inside or outside
the airplane.

General:
• for each of these doors,
amber lights on the overhead panel in the

flight deck, advises the flight crew when any
door is open or not completely closed.

• Because of cabin pressure loads, these

doors cannot be opened during normal flight
conditions.
The lower and upper pressure gates on the

door panel assure their tightness.

• The doors being at about 2.70 meters
above the ground are equipped with
automatic inflatable escape slides.

• The escape slides are inflatable rubber/nylon

units which are stored in compartments on
the bottom inner face of the forward and aft
entry and service doors.

• The slide incorporates a retainer (girt) bar

which is normally stowed in special stowage
hooks on the compartment cover when in the
disarmed position.
• With the girt bar in the disarmed (park)

position, the slide will not be deployed when
the door is opened.

• Inflation will begin during slide deployment.
Automatic inflation requires ± 5 seconds.

• The red manual inflation handle is pulled to

inflate the slide.

To open the door from inside:
• Check girt bar.

• Check red flag.
• Check outside condition.
• Grasp handle and rotate it fully in the
direction of the arrow.
• The door will fall inboard.
• Push the door outside to the fully open
position.

To close the door from inside:
• Unlock the door-open latch (gust lock).

• Grasp the assist handles.
• Pull the door inwards.
• Rotate door handle against the direction of
the arrow to close and lock the door.
• check the position of the external door

handle (Z-handle).
• A Z-handle not properly stowed can cause

important vibrations and increases noise
level during the flight.

To open the door from outside:
• Check the red flag through the window.

• Pull Z-handle outward.
• Rotate handle to the open position.
• Replace the Z-handle in its recess.
• Rotate the door to the fully open position.
• Ensure the door-open latch has engaged.

To close the door from outside:
• Depress the door-open latch.

• Pull the door inwards.
• Extract Z-handle and rotate to the closed
position.
• Re-stow the handle in its recess.

• Overwing emergency exits

• These overwing exits

are only used to escape from the airplane
in an emergency situation.
• Arrows are pointing to the rear of the wing to

show the escape route.

• In a ground emergency:
to the rear over the extended trailing edge
flaps
• In a ditching:
to the front by jumping into the water

Lavatory doors

• The Boeing 737-400 airplane is configured

with single panel lavatory doors.
• Lavatory doors may be locked / unlocked

from inside and outside.

Move the OCCUPIED sign to

VACANT to unlock the door.
The door opens towards the cabin.

• Emergency evacuation routes
All exits may be used in case of an emergency

F/D windows

To use the F/D window as emergency exit:
• Open window.
• Remove rope and trail it out of the window.
• Escape through opening like in the picture
• Caution: check that the strap is anchored to

the airplane structure before dropping it out
of the window.

Cabin doors as emergency exits:
• Check if door in flight condition.

• Check outside conditions.
• Open door handle and push fully open.
• Request help from ABP if necessary.
• Pull red manual inflation handle.
• Check inflation of the slide +/- 5 seconds.

Checking outside conditions:

• Slide fails to inflate

• Redirect passengers
• Guard exit
• Slide inflates
• Slide deflates afterwards
• Use as an apron slide

Overwing hatches as emergency exits
• Check outside condition.

• Pull handle in- and downwards to unlock.
• Put other hand in the lower handgrip.
• Lift panel out of its frame.
• Throw it outside to the opposite of the
evacuation route.


The opening of the overwing hatch from

outside:
• will be done by the rescue team.

• Push in the red plate at top of the hatch.
• Panel unlocks and falls inside the cabin.

Abnormal landing gear conditions
All slides
can be used!

Ditching
• the Boeing 737 will float in a slightly nose-up

attitude.
• In the unlikely event of a ditching with the

fuselage remaining intact, the airplane will
float like a boat.

The slide may not inflate properly.
Always pull the red

manual inflation
handle directly
after opening the door.

To detach the slide from the door sill:

The communication system includes

3 sub-systems:
• The Passenger Address System (public address.)

• The Crew Call System
• The Service Interphone System

Passenger adress system:
• To use by cabin crew or pilots to make

announcement to the passengers.
• To transmit music for passenger

entertainment.

Speakers are installed
• in the PSU
• in each lavatory and
• at each cabin attendants’ stations.

The system gives first priority to
• the flight deck

• the cabin crew member’s
• pre-recorded announcements
• boarding music.
The forward attendant has priority over the

aft attendant.

For announcements:
• pick up the hand microphone.

• depress the push-to-talk button
and speak normally.

Return to Seat is only visible when the

The signs are controlled from the flight deck either

 Floor proximity path lighting is installed on

one side of the aisle to indicate emergency
exits. (white lamps + red lamps at the exits)

Flight deck Switch
The system has 3 positions:

OFF / ARMED / ON
and is guarded to the ARMED position.

Cabin emergency light switch
Normal: EEL controlled

by switch in F/D
ON: takes control from the F/D and

illuminates all EEL

When switch is pushed to the On position:

• all interior and exterior emergency lights
illuminate.
• they last approximately for 20 minutes.
• Exterior emergency lights illuminate the

escape slides, the overwing escape routes
and ground contact area.

The passenger entertainment system

• Oxygen system
Two independent oxygen systems are

installed:
• a high pressure oxygen cylinder supplies the

flight deck crew,
• chemical generators supply the passenger
area. (passenger and cabin crew)

Flight crew oxygen system
• Normal
• 100%
• Emergency

The observer oxygen mask, regulator, and

harness unit is the same as the flight crew.
The mask, regulator and harness are

contained in a stowage cup.

Passenger oxygen system
Passenger cabin oxygen is supplied by

individual chemical oxygen generators
located in each P.S.U and A.S.U. and L.S.U

The system is activated:
• automatically when the cabin altitude

exceeds 14.000 feet
• electrically in the F/D when the guarded

passenger oxygen electrical switch installed
on the aft overhead panel is switched to the
On position.

• Manually in the cabin

In the lavatory

Do not use passenger oxygen with cabin
altitude below 14.000 feet
when smoke or
an abnormal heat source is present.

The number of passengers (including infants)
on one seat row may never exceed the number
of oxygen masks available.

Circuit breakers are located on the galleys

and in the flight deck.
If a circuit breaker pops out, it must

never be reset by the cabin crew

There are 3 lavatory compartments:
• One at the forward end of the cabin
• Two at the aft end of the cabin.

Normal operation stations & responsibilities
Checking of emergency equipment and galley

during preflight:
• CCM 2 to check emergency equipment in the

front (up to first overwing exits).
• CCM 4 to check emergency equipment in the
aft part (from first overwing exits till the end of the aircraft).

• SCCM checks the front galley and catering.
• CCM 3 checks the aft galley and catering.

Passenger safety briefing
• The safety briefing will be done by the SCCM

via the PA.
• Demo by CCM 2 and CCM 4 (or 3).
It is mandatory that this demonstration will be

finished before take-off.
Seating policy
• In all circumstances the cabin crew members

must be seated on crew seats equipped with
shoulder harnesses.
• The minimum number of cabin crew is 4.


Emergency responsibilities; seating
As there are more exits in cabin than cabin

crew members,
some ABP’s will be needed to assist in an

expected evacuation.

The same sector responsibility is applicable in

an emergency.
• CCM 1 and 2 are responsible for the cabin

forward of row 12 (inclusive).
• CCM 3 and 4 are responsible for the cabin

aft of row 13 (inclusive).

Expected ground emergency
• In a ground emergency, the floor level exits

are primary exits.
• ABP’s are to be seated first at the overwing

exits (WL and WR).

Ditching
• The overwing exits are the primary exits.
• In all circumstances, the ccm should be

seated on crew seats equipped with shoulder
harnesses.
