also teach the listener moral values that are
hidden in the lyric.

Social Functions of Songs
• To entertain the listener

• To give someone to not only shares their
emotions with others, but also to have an
emotional connection that just cannot be
experienced in any other way
General Structure of songs
1. Intro (The introduction establishes melodic,
harmonic, and/or rhythmic related to the main
body of song)
2. Verse is the main part of the song that tells a
story.
3. Chorus or Refrain is a part of the song that is
repeated ( the summary of the song’s story)
Chorus can come at the beginning, middle or at the
end of the song structure.
Refrain is any line that repeat in the song lyric
4. Break (A break is actually a brief “rest” or
“pause” for the core melody within a song used
to add further dimension and excitement.)
5. Bridge ( the section that gives the audience
time to reflect on the story, or climax or
conclusion of the story through verses and
chorus.)
6. Outro or Coda (is a line that closes the song.)
It can repeat the intro, chorus or a refrain as an
outro, or a bridge with an instrumental solo.
Language Features of the song
• Lyric are written in first, second or third given
on the specific perspective you choose.
• Use rhyming words
• Use alliteration
• Use poetic devices such as figure of speech
and imaginary.
• Use amusing word play and slang language
(wanna, gonna, ain’t, ect.)
• Use figure of speech
A figure of speech is a word or phrase that has a
meaning something different that its literal meaning.
The following are figure of speech mostly used in song:
 Metaphor : a comparison between two unrelated
things. ( ex :Life is a rollercoaster)
 Simile : compare two different things in an interesting
way. It usually uses like or as. (Ex. She is like the
wind)
 Personification : it gives non-living things human
traits and qualities (emotion, desires, sensation,
action,etc.)
(Ex. My heart cries out loud)
 Hyperbole : an exagration of a fact or statement, for
stronger effect (Ex : I’ve told you a million times)
