QUADRILATERALS

 A quadrilateral is a
plane figure that has
four sides or edges, and
also has four corners or
vertices.
 The angles are present
at the four vertices or
corners of the
quadrilateral.
Properties of
Quadrilaterals
Some properties are common to all quadrilaterals.
These properties are:
• They have four vertices.
• They have four sides.
• The sum of all interior angles is 360°.
• They have two diagonals.
• A quadrilateral can be regular or irregular. A
regular quadrilateral must have 4 equal sides, and
4 equal angles, and its diagonals must bisect each
other. Square is the only quadrilateral that satisfies
all these conditions.
Classification of
Quadrilaterals
The types of quadrilaterals are defined based on
the measure of the angles and lengths of their
sides. As the word ‘Quad’ means four, all these
types of a quadrilateral have four sides, and the
sum of angles of these shapes is 360 degrees.
CLASSIFICATION
OF
PARALLELOGRAM
Area = length x width

A parallelogram is
a rectangle if the diagonals
are congruent.
Area = (diagonal 1 x diagonal 2)
2
A parallelogram is
a rhombus if the diagonals
are perpendicular.
Area = side x side

A parallelogram is
a square if the diagonals
Are equal and perpendicular
Properties of
Parallelogram
Properties of Parallelogram
 If a quadrilateral has a pair of parallel opposite sides,
it’s a special polygon called Parallelogram. The
properties of a parallelogram are as follows:

• The opposite sides are parallel and

equal
• The opposite angles are equal
• The consecutive or adjacent angles are
supplementary
Properties of Parallelogram
• If any one of the angles is a right angle, then all the
other angles will be at right angle
• The two diagonals bisect each other
• Each diagonal bisects the parallelogram into two
congruent triangles
• The Sum of the square of all the sides of a
parallelogram is equal to the sum of the square of
its diagonals. It is also called parallelogram law
CLASSIFICATION
OF TRAPEZOID
W Z

X Y
Isosceles Trapezoid
If the legs or non-parallel sides of the trapezoid are
equal in length, then it is called an isosceles trapezoid.
The angles of the parallel sides (base) in the isosceles
trapezoid are equal to each other. An isosceles
trapezoid has a line of symmetry and both the
diagonals are equal in length.

A B
Scalene Trapezoid
When neither the sides nor the angles of
the trapezoid are equal, then it is a
scalene trapezoid.

Right Trapezoid
A right trapezoid also called the right-
angled trapezoid, has a pair of right
angles. These kinds of trapezoids are
used to estimate the areas under the
curve.
Properties of
Trapezoid
Properties of Trapezoid

•The bases (the top and bottom) are parallel to

each other
•Opposite sides of a trapezoid (isosceles) are of
the same length
•Angles next to each other sum up to 180°
•The median is parallel to both the bases
•Median's length is the average of both the
bases i.e. (a +b)/2
Properties of Trapezoid
•If both pairs of the opposite sides are parallel in
a trapezoid, it is considered a parallelogram
•If both pairs of the opposite sides are parallel,
all sides are of equal length, and at right angles

to each other, then a trapezoid can be

considered as a square
•If both pairs of the opposite sides are parallel,
its opposite sides are of equal length and at
right angles to each other, then a trapezoid can
Proving theorems
involving
Quadrilaterals
How do you find
out if a
quadrilateral is a
parallelogram?
A:One can find if a quadrilateral is
a parallelogram or not by using
one of the following theorems.
Theorem 1: A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of
opposite sides are congruent.

Theorem 2: A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of

opposite angles are congruent.

Theorem 3: A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if its diagonals

bisect each other.
Theorem 1: A quadrilateral is a
parallelogram if both pairs of
opposite sides are congruent.

If
AB=DC
and
AD=BC,
and if for each pair the opposite sides are parallel to
each other,
then, the quadrilateral is a parallelogram.
Theorem 2: A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
both pairs of opposite angles are
congruent.

If
a=Ø
and
b=Ø,
then the quadrilateral is a parallelogram.
Theorem 3: A quadrilateral is a
parallelogram if its diagonals
bisect each other.

If
AP=PC
and
BP=PD,
then the quadrilateral is a parallelogram.
