Attractions - A tourist attraction is a place of interest that tourists visit, typically for its
inherent or an exhibited natural or cultural value, historical significance, natural or built
beauty, offering leisure and amusement.
Attractions are a core component of tourism. They are often called “tourist attractions”
because they tend to attract tourists. Attractions are the places, people, events, and things
that make up the objects of the tourist gaze and attract tourists to destinations.
Common examples include natural and cultural sites, historical places, monuments, zoos
and game reserves, aquaria, museums and art galleries, gardens, architectural structures,
themeparks, sports facilities, festivals and events, wildlife, and people.
Operating Sectors of the Tourism Industry
Events - an activity that is planned for a special purpose and usually involves a lot of
people, for example, a meeting, party, trade show, or conference.
An event is a planned and organized occasion, for example a social gathering or a sports
match.
Events tourism is the act of organising and promoting an event in a town, region, or
country in the hope to attract domestic and/or international tourists. An event has a wide
spectrum of possibilities: music festivals, sporting events, religious dates (India’s Holi
festival, the ‘Festival of Colour’ for example), arts, charity events, food and drink, and
much more.
4 Main Categories of Event Tourism
Niche events can include elements associated with a country, region, or culture. Anything
art, food, drink, business, sport, etc related. Pop-up events like local farmers markets, an
international expo/conference, a salsa class, group yoga sessions in the park are some
examples.
Participatory sporting events are another draw to many places around the world.
Marathons, the UK’s Tough Mudder obstacle and mud run course, or Western Australia’s
Ironman race are prime examples of these.
Signature cultural events are fun as there are so many examples to pick from. These must-
see events draw people from all over the world and some stand-out events include
Oktoberfest in Munich, Japan’s sakura (cherry blossom) season, Edinburgh’s world-famous
Fringe Festival, the beautiful Loy Krathong festival (Thai lantern festival), or La Tomatina
(Spain’s celebrated tomato throwing festival).
And last but not least, international sporting events. These are the events that are broadcast
across the world on TV and social media and make huge sums of money for their
respective hosts and draw millions of viewers across the globe. Examples include the
Olympics, the Champions League, Wimbledon, the Superbowl, the Masters, the Rugby
World Cup, and so much more.
Adventure Tourism
Adventure tourism is defined as the movement of the people from one to another place
outside their comfort zone for exploration or travel to remote areas, exotic and possibly
hostile areas.
Adventure tourism is a type of tourism in which tourists engage in adventure activities
such as trekking, climbing, rafting, scuba diving, or the likes.
Adventure travel is a leisure activity that takes place in an unusual, exotic, remote, or
wilderness destination. It tends to be associated with high levels of activity by the
participant, most of it outdoors.
Adventure tourists expect to experience various levels of risk, excitement, and tranquillity
and be personally tested. In particular, they are explorers of unspoiled, exotic parts of the
planet and also seek personal challenges. The main factor distinguishing adventure tourism
from all other forms of tourism is the planning and preparation involved.

Entertainment Tourism
The entertainment industry plays a significant role in tourism. It contributes to the
development of entertainment tourism by offering a mix of gambling and non-gaming
elements in integrated resorts.
Entertainment services, such as sports activities and animation, are essential for ensuring a
pleasant holiday experience and improving tourists' functional capacity.
Film-induced tourism, driven by movies featuring theme parks and their attractions, serves
as a marketing tool to attract more tourists to theme parks.
The entertainment industry also has economic implications, as it supports economic
growth in the tourism and travel industry.
Additionally, entertainment activities and facilities differentiate tourism products and
destinations, enhancing their attractiveness and competitiveness.
Overall, the entertainment industry contributes to the overall appeal and success of the
tourism sector by providing enjoyable experiences, attracting visitors, and generating
economic benefits.
Historic Buildings and Architectural Features
Probably what most of us think of first, when considering the appeal of an urban location
to tourists are its historical and architectural features.
Often they are subsumed into a general “feel” of the destination, rather than there being an
appreciation of any individual building – the sense that the town is old and beautiful, its
buildings having mellowed overtime and their architecture quintessentially representative
of the region or nation and its people.
The truly outstanding sites of architectural, cultural or historic importance around the
world are recognized as UNESCO Heritage sites.
Examples:
a. Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte
b. Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in Palawan
c. Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras
d. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park of Palawan
Archaeological Sites
An archaeological site is any place where there are physical remains of past human activities. There
are many types of archaeological sites. Prehistoric archaeological sites are those without a written
record.
They may include villages or cities, stone quarries, rock art, ancient cemeteries, campsites, and
megalithic stone monuments. A site can be as small as a pile of chipped stone tools left by a
prehistoric hunter.
Historical archaeology sites are those where archaeologists can use writing to aid their research.
Those could include densely populated modern cities, or areas far below the surface of a river, or
the sea. The wide variety of historical archaeological sites include shipwrecks, battlefields, slave
quarters, cemeteries, mills, and factories.
Artifacts, Features, and Ecofacts
Even the smallest archaeological site may contain a wealth of important information. Artifacts are
objects made, modified, or used by humans. Archaeologists analyze artifacts to learn about the
people who made and used them. Non-portable artifacts called features are also important sources
of information at archaeological sites. Features include things like soil stains that show where
storage pits, structures, or fences once existed. Ecofacts are natural remains related to human
activity. Plant and animal remains can help archaeologists understand diet and subsistence patterns.
