FIVE TYPES OF

POWER
• LEGITIMATE POWER

• Also known as formal authority,


this type of power comes from
one's posi ti on or rol e in a group
or organi zat ion. It 's the
authority that peopl e accept as
valid, often due t o societal or
organizat ional norms.
2. REFERENT POWER

• This i s based on the


interpersonal att raction between
the infl uencer and the
influenced. People are
influenced by those they like,
admire, or want to be like. It's
often associ ated with
charismati c leaders.
3. EXPERT POWER

• This power comes from one's


knowledge, skills, or expertise. When
someone is seen as knowledgeable or
skil led in a particular domain, others
may be influenced by their expertise
and advice.
4. COERCIVE POWER

• This is rooted in the ability to punish or take


away something undesirable. Individuals
may comply with someone's influence
because of the fear of negative
consequences or loss.
5. REWARD POWER
• This is based on the ability to
provide rewards or incentives.
People may be influenced by others
who can offer them something
desirable, whether it's tangible (like
a bonus) or intangible (like praise).
