Quarter 2 – Module 3: Procedures for

Planting: Transplanting Seedlings
Agriculture and Fishery Arts
Quarter 2 – Module 3: Procedures for
Planting: Transplanting Seedlings
What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you
in mind. It is here to help you learn the fundamentals in
Agriculture and Fishery Arts. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level
of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.
What I Need to Know

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

Lesson 1 – Preparations before transplanting

Lesson 2 – Methods of planting vegetable crops

Lesson 3 – How to determine the rate of seedling per

area of land.
What I Need to Know

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1.identify the signs/indicators that will tell you the

seedlings are ready for transplanting;

2.explain what hardening means in Agriculture; and

3.create a flow showing the complete procedure in

transplanting seedlings by writing the basic steps.
What I Know
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen
letter on a separate sheet of paper.
1.The seedlings are ready for transplanting when they
have grown how many pairs of leaves?
A. 2 to 3
B. 1 to 3
C. 3 to 4
D. 5 to 6

2. Arrange the basic steps for transplanting seedlings
chronologically

2. The seedlings are ready for transplanting when they have grown
three to four pairs of leaves. Prior to transplanting, the seed box or
seed bed must be watered. This will prevent injury to the roots of the
seedlings, which could delay growth.
3. Prepare watering materials like sprinkler cans or a water hose.

3. What does the term “punla” means?
A. seedlings prepared for transplanting

B. seeds prepared for sowing

C. vegetative parts of plants for reproduction

D. none of the above

4.The following statements below describes the term
“HARDENING” in agriculture, except one?
A. Hardening is the process of exposing transplants
(seedlings) gradually to outdoor conditions.
B. It enables your transplants to withstand the changes in
environmental conditions they will face when planted outside
in the garden.
C. It encourages a change from soft, succulent growth to a
firmer, harder growth.
D. Hardening is the process of firming up the soil around
the roots of the seedlings prior to transplanting.
Lesson Preparations before
1 Transplanting

Before transplanting the seeds you sown, you have to

make necessary preparations like clearing the land,
making soil beds, furrows, farming tools, watering
materials etc. That way you can perform transplanting
smoothly and hassle free.
What’s In

1.What is the role of seeds in crop production?

2.Why is it important to test the planting materials

Notes to the Teacher

before planting? You may let them draw or illustrate their answers.
What’s New

Have you tried sowing seeds of certain plants/crops?

Did you plant it directly on the farm or you put them first

in the nursery? What were the steps you followed in

transplanting the growing plant?

What is It
PREPARATIONS BEFORE TRANSPLANTING
Seedlings prepared for transplanting are what we
commonly called “punla”. These are young plants that have
been grown from the good seeds you selected. In the event
that they are hardened, the seedlings are to be transplanted
any time after they have recovered.
What is It
PREPARATIONS BEFORE TRANSPLANTING
1. The seedlings are ready for transplanting when they
have grown three to four pairs of leaves. Prior to
transplanting, the seed box or seed bed must be watered.
This will prevent injury to the roots of the seedlings, which
could delay growth.

2. Prepare furrow on the thoroughly prepared plot
where the seedlings are to be planted.

3. Prepare watering materials like sprinkler cans or

water hose.
What is It
Steps in Transplanting Seedlings

It is not advisable to transplant seedlings under the

direct heat of the sun. The best time to plant them is in the
late in the afternoon to protect the seedlings from too
much exposure to sunlight. This will also allow the
development of the roots to start.
What is It
Steps in Transplanting Seedlings

1. Water the seed bed/seed box before carefully

uprooting the tallest and healthiest seedlings.

2. With your right thumb and index finger, pull each

seedling carefully for transplanting.

3. Dig a small hole about 2-3 cm. deep within the
furrows using your index finger and insert the seedlings
into the holes.

4. Seal the hole with a thin layer of fine soil, with utmost
care of not damaging the seedlings and press the soil
gently towards the seedlings.
What’s More
1. Study the image and answer the following
questions.
What’s More
1. What is a cotyledon?

2. What roles does the

cotyledons serve to the
growing plant (seedling)
What’s More

3. Which of the two

illustrations show the right
way of planting the
seedling? Why?
What’s More
4. When should you
transplant the seedlings,
when it still has the
cotyledons or when it
already loses the
cotyledons? Why?
What’s More

II. Answer the following.

1. What are the materials needed for transplanting seedlings
2. Why is it not advisable to transplant seedlings under the direct
heat of the sun?
3. When is the appropriate time to transplant seedlings?
4. What are you going to do if the conditions for transplanting
seedlings are not ideal or met?
What I Have Learned

1. “Punla” is commonly used term pertaining to

seedlings prepared for transplanting.

2. Seedlings are ready for transplanting when they

have grown three to four pair of leaves.

What I Have Learned

3. Necessary preparations must be done before transplanting

so that plants will not be damaged during the process of
transplanting.

4.Transplanting seedlings must be done in the late afternoon to

prevent them from being exposed to too much heat of the sunlight.
Transplanting seedlings late in the afternoon will also allow the
seedlings to develop roots.
What I Have Learned

5. Following the proper steps in transplanting seedlings must

be observed to ensure high survival rate of the growing plants.

6. Handle the seedlings with utmost care when transplanting

for these are very delicate.
You may ask your students to write down additional
inputs they have learned from this module. Or you can
have them fill in this section blank slate.
What I Can Do

Using the flowchart below,

complete the procedure in

transplanting seedlings by

writing the basic steps.

Additional Activities

Demonstrate!
Direction: Apply what you have learned in sowing seeds
from the previous modules, and what you have learned in
this module.
Sow seeds of crops that are in season or anything that is
available in your locality and place them in your own seed
boxes or seed beds.
Additional Activities

Demonstrate!
While waiting for the seeds to germinate/grow, prepare
the plot where the seedlings are to be planted.
Once the seedlings are ready for transplanting perform
transplanting by following the appropriate steps.
How good did you perform the activity?
