IMAGE PROCESSING

LECTURE 1
WHAT IS IMAGE PROCESSING

• Image processing is the process of transforming an image into a digital

form and performing certain operations to get some useful information
from it.
• It involves the manipulation, analysis, and interpretation of digital
images. It encompasses a wide range of techniques and methodologies
aimed at enhancing, extracting information from, or altering images to
achieve specific objectives. Image processing can be applied in various
areas such as computer vision, computer graphics, signal processing,
and machine learning.
IMAGE PROCESSING IS THE COMPREHENSIVE DOMAIN
THAT ENCOMPASSES THE FOLLOWING KEY ASPECTS:

• Image Acquisition: The process of capturing images using various devices like
cameras, scanners, satellites, or sensors. This step involves converting real-world
scenes into digital representations.
• Image Enhancement: Techniques for improving the quality of images by adjusting
brightness, contrast, sharpness, and reducing noise to make them more visually
appealing or suitable for further analysis.
• Image Restoration: Involves the removal of artifacts, distortions, or noise that may
have been introduced during the process. Restoration techniques aim to recover
the original information from the degraded image.
TYPES OF IMAGE PROCESSING

• Visualization - Find objects that are not visible in the image

• Recognition - Distinguish or detect objects in the image
• Sharpening and restoration - Create an enhanced image from the
original image
• Pattern recognition - Measure the various patterns around the objects
in the image
• Retrieval - Browse and search images from a large database of digital
images that are similar to the original image
IMPORTANCE OF IMAGE PROCESSING

• Enhanced Visualization: The utilization of image processing techniques enhances

the overall clarity and quality of visual data, thereby facilitating a more
straightforward interpretation, analysis, and extraction of valuable information from
images.
• The pixels in the image can be manipulated to any desired density and contrast: In
digital image processing, you can adjust the brightness (density) and the distinction
between light and dark areas (contrast) of an image to meet specific preferences or
requirements. You have the flexibility to fine-tune these aspects to achieve the
desired visual appearance.
APPLICATIONS OF IMAGE PROCESSING

• Face Detection:Face detection is a computer vision technique that focuses

on recognizing and determining the precise location of human faces in
digital images or video frames. This pivotal technology plays a crucial role in
numerous domains, such as photography, video surveillance, biometrics,
and beyond. Face detection commonly involves a series of essential steps.
• Medical Image Retrieval: Medical Image Retrieval is an advanced technology
empowering healthcare professionals with the capability to efficiently search
and retrieve specific medical images from extensive databases.
APPLICATIONS OF IMAGE PROCESSING

• Traffic Sensing Technologies: Technologies encompass a diverse

array of tools and systems that meticulously observe and amass data
pertaining to the traffic conditions prevailing on roadways.

• Image Reconstruction: Image reconstruction refers to the procedure

of generating a visual portrayal by utilizing gathered data or
information. It is widely employed in medical imaging techniques like
CT scans or MRIs, aimed at transforming raw data into significant and
comprehensible images.
IMAGE ANALYSIS

• Image analysis, also referred to as image processing or computer

vision, serves as a scholarly domain concerned with the extraction of
valuable information or significant insights from digital images. This
area encompasses a diverse set of techniques and algorithms
employed to process, interpret, and manipulate images for multiple
applications.
IMAGE ANALYSIS INCLUDES;
• Image Enhancement: Enhancing the quality of images entails
optimizing factors such as contrast, brightness, and sharpness to
enhance the visibility of significant details.
• Image Enhancement: Enhancing the quality of images entails
optimizing factors such as contrast, brightness, and sharpness to
enhance the visibility of significant details.
• Pattern Recognition: The process of identifying and categorizing
objects or patterns within an image, typically involving the utilization of
machine learning algorithms to make determinations based on
extracted features.
PREPROCESSING

• Preprocessing involves implementing a range of techniques to enhance

or modify images prior to conducting further analysis or implementing
specific algorithms. The primary objective of preprocessing is to refine
the quality of images, extract pertinent information, and minimize the
presence of noise or artifacts.
PROCESSING TECHNIQUES USED IN IMAGE PROCESSING

• Image Resizing: The act of resizing images encompasses adjusting

their dimensions, be it to decrease or enhance their size. This is
typically carried out to align with the specific demands of an
application or to establish a standardized image size for subsequent
processing.
• Image Filtering: Filtering techniques play a vital role in improving and
refining images through the elimination of undesired artifacts or noise.
Prominent methods for image filtering encompass Gaussian smoothing,
median filtering, and bilateral filtering. These approaches effectively
contribute to enhancing image quality and achieving desired visual
outcomes.
PROCESSING TECHNIQUES USED IN IMAGE PROCESSING

• Image Registration: Image registration methods are employed to

align multiple images captured from varying perspectives or at
different points in time. This technique proves beneficial for various
applications such as image fusion, motion tracking, and image
comparison.
• Image Segmentation: Segmentation encompasses the process of
dividing an image into significant regions or objects. This widely
implemented technique proves valuable in tasks like object detection,
image recognition, and medical image analysis.
