Grammar: Modal verbs
What are modal verbs?

Modals verbs (also called, auxiliary verbs) are

special verbs that behave irregularly in English.
They are different from normal verbs like “work, play,
visit…” They give additional information about
the function of the main verb that follows it. They
have a great variety of communicative functions.
Grammar: Modal verbs
Here are some characteristics of modal verbs:

• Modal verbs cannot function without other verbs. The

principal verb is always found after the modal verb and in the
base form (infinitive without “to”).
• Modal verbs are not conjugated and have no tenses. They
never change their form. You can’t add “s”, “ed”, or “ing”…
• They are used to indicate modality and allow speakers to
express certainty, possibility, willingness, obligation,
necessity, and ability.
Grammar: Modal verbs
The modal verbs are:
1. Can
2. Could
3. May
4. Might
5. Should
6. Ought to
7. Must/Have To
8. Would
9. Will
Grammar: Modal verbs
Can:
Meaning: to be able to; indicates ability or possibility

Examples: I can speak five languages. / We can work late tonight if you need
us. / Bill and Joe can’t help you. / The restaurant can be expensive if you drink
a lot of wine.

In interrogative sentences, we use “can” to ask permission (informally)

or to ask about possibilities.

Examples: Can I have a glass of water? / Can you help me? / Can they work
late tonight?
Grammar: Modal verbs
Could:
Meaning: past tense of “can”, indicates ability or possibility in the past or in a
very formal way.

Examples: Joe could speak Spanish when he was young. / I couldn’t sleep
last night. I could do that if you allow me.

As with “can”, in interrogative sentences “could” is used to ask

permission or to ask about possibilities, but in a more formal sense.

Examples: Could you pass the salt please? / Could you help me? / Could I be
wrong?
Grammar: Modal verbs
Should:
Meaning: indicates a recommendation or obligation or reflects an opinion
about what is right or correct

Examples: I should call my parents more often. / You shouldn’t work so hard. /
They should practice more if they want to win the championship.

“Should” is used in interrogative sentences to ask if there is an

obligation or to ask for a recommendation.

Examples: Should we leave a tip? / Should I have the steak or the chicken? /
Where should they meet you?
Grammar: Modal verbs
Would:
Meaning: indicates preference, desire, or intention; past tense of “will”.

Examples:

She would like to go to New York someday.

I would like a beer and my wife would like a glass of wine, please.
Would you like some coffee?
Would you help me please?
When would you like to go to the movies?
Grammar: Modal verbs
Must:
Meaning: indicates an obligation, prohibition or necessity; it is a synonym of “have to” in affirmative
sentences.

Examples: You must [have to] read this book, it’s fantastic. / We must [have to] leave now or we will be
late. / You must not drink and drive. / When must we meet you?

We also use “must” for probability or assumptions.

Examples: John’s not here. He must be sick because he never misses class. / It must be difficult to learn a
new language as an adult.

“Must” can also be used in rhetorical questions.

Examples: Must you always be late? Must she talk so much?

Esencial 4: Construir textos cortos, coherentes y cohesivos, escritos y

orales relacionados con los cambios sufridos por personas, lugares y
hechos de la comunidad cercana.
Topic 2: Scanning and skimming
Skimming and scanning are two useful reading
techniques. They can help you to find
information really quickly in a text.
Skimming is when you look over a text quickly
to get the general idea of it. You don't need to
read every word - just pick out key words and
sentences.
Scanning is when you look over a text quickly,
line by line, hunting for details like key words,
dates, names and numbers. It's a useful skill to
use when you need answers to specific
questions.
Uses of skimming
You can use skimming to:

• See what’s in the news in a paper or on a website

• Browse through a book to see if you want to read it
• Look through the television guide to see what’s on one
evening
• Flick through a catalogue to see what’s on offer
• Look through the options given on a Google search to see
what sites it suggests
How to skim
1. If you need to answer a specific question, read it
before the text.
2. Read the first paragraph and last paragraph in full.
3. Read the opening words and closing words of the
paragraphs in between.
4. Use headings, sub-headings, graphics, bullet points
or key words (those in bold, italics, capitals or
underlined) to guide you.
