OUTPUT DEVICE
Output devices are computer hardware which are used to communicate the result of data processing
carried by the computer to the user. Following are the different types of output devices:

1. MONITOR

• Monitor is called visual display unit. It is an electronic output device for computer.
• It display the result of user activities. The output produced by the monitor is called soft copy output.
• Monitors are distinguished from one another on the basis of the following features.
• Size: the size of the monitor is measured diagonally.
• Color: the monitor can be monochrome(one color) or colored.
• Resolution: total number of pixel present on the screen. Resolution = pixel in row X pixel in column
• Dot pitch: the distance between pixel on the monitor is called dot pitch, the monitor with lesser dot pitch have
sharpen image.
• Pixel: In computer graphics, a pixel is a tiny dot or square of color that makes up an image on a computer
screen. The word "pixel" comes from the words "picture" and "element" and was coined in 1969.

TYPES OF MONITOR

A. Cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors

• the cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube containing electron gun and phosphorous coated screen. The
electron gun fires a beam of electrons which fall repeatedly on the phosphorous coated screen which
glow it for a fraction of second. In color CRT monitors, there are three electron guns each with a unique
color i.e. , Red, Green and blue. Other colors are produced by the combination of these three colors.

B. LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD)
• Light crystal display is a light weight monitors. It contains a substance called liquid crystal between two
sheets. The molecules of the substance are lined up in such a way that the light behind the screen is
blocked or allows to create an image on the creen. LCDs provide a sharper image than CRT monitors and
emit less radiation . They are used in wide range of applications.

C. LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES MONITORS
(LED)
• LED monitors work by using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to convert an electric current into light and
create images on a screen
• Better picture quality: LED monitors offer brighter and color accuracy.
• Thinner and lighter: LED monitors are generally thinner and lighter than traditional LCD monitors.
• Longer lifespan: LED monitors have a longer lifespan than traditional LCD monitors.
• Visible in sunlight: LED displays are bright enough to be used outdoors.

2. PRINTERS

• The printer is an output device that produces text and graphics on a physical medium such as on paper.
Printed information often called hard copy because the information exist physically and is a more
permanent form of output. The speed of printer mostly expressed in pages per minute (ppm).
• Printers are divided in the following two categories.
 Impact printers
 Non-impact printer

IMPACT PRINTERS
• An impact printer creates an image by pressing an ink ribbon against the paper, using pins or hammers
to shape the image. It works like typewriter, which use small hammer to strike the ribbon. Each hammer
is embossed with the shape of alphanumeric character.
• Types of impact printers are:
 Dot Matrix printer: produces text and image by striking pins against the ink ribbon. (9 to 24 pins) used
for printing invoice, purchase order.
 Drum Printer: a fix font character set is engraved onto a number of print wheals. The wheals, joined to
form a large drum, spin at high speed, a hammer strikes the paper from the rear, which press the paper
against the ribbon and the drum, causing the desire character to be printed on the paper.

NON-IMPACT PRINTERS

• Non-impact printers print characters and graphics on the paper with laser or sprayed ink or with heat
and pressure without striking the paper. These printer are faster, no noisy and high quality of print but
costly.
 Inject or laserjet printers: most popular printers. It spray tiny drops of ink onto a page to create image.
This is done by using magnetized plates which direct the ink path onto the paper in the desire pattern.
 Laser printers: laser printer utilize a laser beam to produce an image on a drum. The drum is rolled
through a toner( containing dry ink) and the electrically charged portion of drum pick up ink. Finally with
the combination of heat and pressure the ink on the drum is transferred on to the page.
 Very fast and high quality print.

3: PLOTTERS

• Plotter are the hard copy output device. They are mainly used by architects, engineers, and other
professional who need high-precision graphics output of large sizes on papers.
• Plotters are more expensive than printers.
 Drum plotter
 Flatbed plotter
