    What are output devices?

    • An output device is any device used to send data from a


    computer to another device or user. Output devices allow
    computers to communicate with users and with other
    devices. 
    Types of Output devices

    • Hard copy
    • Softcopy
    Hardcopy

    • Hard copy is any information that is printed on paper and


    is permanet. Hard copies allow data to be read without
    the need of a computer and are often required when
    someone needs to sign a document.
    Softcopy

    • A soft copy is an electronic copy of some type of data,


    such as a file viewed on a computer's display or
    transmitted as an e-mail attachment.

    What are impact printers?

    • An impact printer makes contact with the paper. It usually


    forms the print image by pressing an inked ribbon against
    the paper using a hammer or pins.
    Examples of Impact printers

    • Dot-Matrix Printers
    • Daisy-wheel printers
    • Line printers
    • Drum printer
    • Chain printers
    • Band printers
    Dot-Matrix Printers

    • The dot-matrix printer uses print heads containing from 9


    to 24 pins. These pins produce patterns of dots on the
    paper to form the individual characters. 
    Line printers

    • Line printers, or line-at-a-time printers, use special


    mechanism that can print a whole line at once; they can
    typically print the range of 1,200 to 6,000 lines per
    minute.
    Non-Impact Printers

    • Non-impact printers do not use a striking device to


    produce characters on the paper; and because these
    printers do not hammer against the paper they are much
    quieter. Instead ink sprayed or toner powder is used.
    These printers are very inexpensive

    Inkjet Printers
    • Ink-jet printers dots are formed by tiny
    droplets of ink. Ink-jet printers form
    characters on paper by spraying ink from
    tiny nozzles through an electrical field that
    arranges the charged ink particles into
    characters at the rate of approximately
    250 characters per second. The ink is
    absorbed into the paper and dries
    instantly.
    Laser printer

    • Laser printer produce attractive document at a high


    resolution and are much faster than ink-jets. They are used
    in many workplaces because they are quiet, and quickly.
    The printing speed of laser printers is 5 to 300 pages per
    minute (ppm). The plain text is printed faster than graphics.
    • Laser printer prints text and graphics in a high quality
    resolution, a typical laser printer provides the resolution of
    1200dpi or more.
    Thermal Printer

    • Thermal printers use heat on chemically


    treated paper to form character. Thermal
    printer uses color waxes and heat to produce
    images on special paper. The color wax sheets
    are not required for black-and-white output.
    Thermal printers are expensive and require
    costly paper. These printers are used to create
    the highest-quality color printing
    Plotters Printer

    • A plotter uses colour pens or toners to draw an image on


    a paper
    Microflim
    • Microforms are scaled-down reproductions of documents,
    typically either films or paper, made for the purposes of
    transmission, storage, reading, and printing. Microform
    images are commonly reduced to about one twenty-fifth of
    the original document size. For special purposes, greater
    optical reductions may be used.
    Modems

    • Modems are both an input and output device. A modem


    enables a computer to send data to and receive data from
    another computer over a telephone line.
