Computer Components: A Detailed Look at The Parts Used in Building A New Computer - Dumbed Down For Durd

The document summarizes the key components used in building a new computer, focusing on Intel vs AMD processors. It recommends the Intel Core i7 processor over AMD options as it is faster, uses newer technologies that will make it more future-proof, and is predicted to outlast AMD processors by 3 years, despite being more expensive initially. The motherboard is also an important consideration, as Intel and AMD use different chipsets that impact compatibility and upgrade options.

A detailed look at the parts used in building a new computer dumbed down for durd

Note: Windows 7
All of the components selected and/or compared are chosen partially on their functionality with Windows 7, as well as their future-proofing. Their price-performance ratios are also (generally) the best in their class. These parts work best with the current and future operating systems. This isnt guaranteed, of course, but their software and performance is the most advanced available for the appropriate price.

Topic: Intel or AMD?

Intel and AMD both have certain flagship processors, available for a significant price. The processors featured here are not the fastest in their product lines, but they are considerably cheaper than the flagships, and are within a 10% performance margin. However, Intel and AMDs flagship processors are not at all similar in performance, price, or compatibility. AMDs processors cannot achieve the level of performance gained by the new Intel Core i7 processor. AMD is cheaper, and some consider their products to be more stable, but Intel is using newer technology in the construction of these chips and employing technologies to be used in future systems. While they are more expensive, the Intel chips will simply outperform and outlast the AMD chips in the years to come. There is also the matter of compatibility. AMD chips use a different motherboard type (or chipset) from Intel chips. Since the AMD market shares are being rapidly cut by their performance losses against the i7, they will doubtless come out with a different chipset in the next 6-9 months. Upgrading with their current motherboards will be limited, especially compared to the Intel chipset. Based on this information, I chose to base these components off of an Intel system.

Intel and AMD both have top processors, but Intel Core i7 is faster than any AMD model available, and it uses new technologies which will make future upgrades more accessible. This also makes them more likely to handle future operating systems and hardware changes, so much so that it is predicted to outlast the AMD hardware by almost three years. The Intel processor is more expensive, but simply a faster and more futureproof option. Based on that, I have chosen to display parts which are specifically compatible with the i7. The motherboard is the component most affected.

Processors
There are three things that affect processor speed:
Clock Speed (measured in Gigahertz) Number of Cores Architecture
No completely accurate comparison can be made between two processors by one of these factors unless the other two are identical in both components. For example, a single core processor at 3.4 GHz would be nowhere near as fast as a quad core processor running at 2 GHz.

The Intel Core i7 processor uses a new brand of architecture.
