Integers

Negatives and Positives by Sheldon Lee and Mrs. Gray

Integers

Integers are numbers that are on the number line where they can go below zero and become negatives. Going above the number line makes them positives

Neutral

There is only one number that is neutral and that is zero. Its because it doesnt go above or below the number line.

Positives
Positives numbers are the numbers that are on the right of zero on the number line. As they get more numbers they get bigger and bigger. They are represented by the + symbol or no symbol at all.

Negatives

Negative numbers are the numbers on the left of zero on the number line They are represented by the negative symbol (-)

Adding Integers Movie

Adding
If the integers have the same sign, add them and keep the sign

3+4=7

or

-5 + -6 = -11

When the integers have different signs, find the difference and give the answer the larger numbers sign -3 + 2 = -1

Subtracting Integers Movie

Subtracting
In subtraction you change the operation to addition and change the sign of the second number. Then you apply the addition rules. 5 - 4 = 5 + (-4) = 1 5 - (-7) = 5 + (+7) = 12

Multiplying and Dividing

When multiplying integers you can use the love/hate analogy. If you love to love, thats love. So, a positive times a positive is a positive. Or a positive divided by a positive is a positive. 9 9 = 81 or 45 9 = 5

If you hate to hate, thats hate. So, a negative times a negative is a positive. Or a negative divided by a negative is a positive.

Multiplying and Dividing continued

If you love to hate, you hate. So, a positive times a negative is a negative. Or a positive divided by a negative is a negative. 5 -6 = -30 or 25 -5 = -5

If you hate to love, you hate. So, a negative times a positive is a negative. Or a negative divided by a positive is a negative. -7 3 = -21 or -28 4 = -7

Multiplication and Division

Another way to look at multiplication and division is: If you have an even number of negative signs, the answer will be positive. If you have an odd number of negative signs, the answer will be negative.

Integer Practice
Complete the following questions to practice adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. -5 + - 4 = 3 + -5 = 7+2= -4 - 3 = 2-8= 7 - (-3) = -3 - (-5) = 3 -4 = -7 -2 = 83= -9 2 = 30 -2 = -24 -6 = -4 2 = 14 7 =

Integer Practice
Check your answers.

-5 + - 4 = -9 3 + -5 = -2 7+2=9 -4 - 3 = -4 + -3 = -7 2 - 8 = 2 + -8 = -6 7 - (-3) = 7 + 3 = 10 -3 - (-5) = -3 + 5 = 2

3 -4 = -12 -7 -2 = 14 8 3 = 24 -9 2 = -18 30 -2 = -15 -24 -6 = 4 -4 2 = -2 14 7 = 2
