Singapore practices a two-pronged approach of deterrence and diplomacy. Deterrence refers to measures taken to prevent threats from countries or terrorists. It is necessary for Singapore due to negative experiences during the Japanese Occupation and Indonesian confrontation. This made the government realize the importance of being militarily self-reliant. Without a strong military, Singaporeans would not feel secure and foreign companies would not feel safe investing. Thus, Singapore built its own army to provide security and attract foreign investment.

(B) Singapore’s two-pronged approach
What is deterrence?
• To deter means to prevent.
• Deterrence refers to measures taken by countries to prevent and protect
themselves from threats (threats can be from countries or terrorists).
Why is deterrence necessary for Singapore?
• Singapore had negative experiences during the Japanese Occupation &
Indonesian confrontation.
o This made the Singapore government realise the importance of being
militarily self-reliant.
• During the Japanese occupation, Singaporeans suffered because the British
withdrew their military forces and were unable to defend Singaporeans.
o Without the presence of a strong military force, Singaporeans will not
feel secure & foreign companies will not feel safe investing in Singapore.
o Thus, the SG government built its own army to:
§ give people a sense of security, and
§ attract & retain foreign investors.
