KubeCon EU 2016: What is OpenStack's role in a Kubernetes world?

OpenStack is a global open collaboration to produce an open source infrastructure stack. Since its creation 5 years ago, it moved from an open source compute / object storage IaaS solution to about 30 projects providing programmable infrastructure building blocks. How does this project fit in a container-driven future ? How complementary is it with Kubernetes ? In this talk, Thierry Carrez will detail the long-term vision for OpenStack: infrastructure for a programmable infrastructure world and an integration engine for future infrastructure technologies. VyOS now supports VXLAN interfaces which allow multiple L2 segments to be multiplexed over a single physical network. VXLAN uses encapsulation to transport Ethernet frames over IP. The VNI field in VXLAN headers maps frames to different L2 segments. VyOS VXLAN interfaces can be configured and used like physical interfaces for routing, bridging, and protocols like OSPF. However, attributes like the VNI and multicast group cannot be changed after interface creation without deleting and recreating the interface.

Kubernetes could help integrate NFV apps but challenges remain. - Issues include converting existing VM-based NFVs to containers, supporting both OpenStack and Kubernetes, and ensuring the SDN controller ONOS can communicate with Kubernetes network components. - The presenter's team addressed these by designing a multi-interface CNI plugin and centralized IPAM using Etcd to integrate ONOS and provide pod networking. Further work is needed to fully integrate ONOS control and test the solution.
