Expanding on our previous study Charging Towards Zero, this study provides a more detailed assessment of the economic and environmental performance of the ERCOT fleet updated for the latest market changes in 2023. Layering on carbon contracts, Tierra Climate concludes energy storage assets could meaningfully reduce carbon emissions on the electricity grid. This study also details the backdrop of support from several industry players within the Energy Storage Solutions Consortium (ESSC) as well as the ongoing effort to formalize this approach with Verra, the largest nonprofit carbon registry in the world.

Carbon contracts with grid-scale batteries might provide corporations with an elegant solution to meet sustainability targets and decarbonize the electricity grid, which cannot be accomplished through renewable energy purchases alone.
