Two medieval villages in the Tachov region of West Bohemia, deserted in 1945, are the subject of this paper. Bažantov/Wosant and Pořejov/Purschau, both of medieval origin (first mentioned in the 14th-century records), were investigated, together with three nearby mills. Archaeological features and several standing structures (stone walls) have survived on the sites after only 60 years of abandonment and gradual decay, enabling both the study of a rural built environment in this border region and providing insights into formation processes of the archaeological record. Small scale excavations have demonstrated long-term continuity in a house in Bažantov from the later medieval period.
