- Kirkcudbrightshire (/kɜːrˈkuːbrɪʃər, -ʃɪər/ kur-KOO-brish-ər, -eer), or the County of Kirkcudbright or the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright is one of the historic counties of Scotland, covering an area in the south-west of the country. Until 1975, Kirkcudbrightshire was an administrative county used for local government. Since 1975 the area has formed part of Dumfries and Galloway for local government purposes. Kirkcudbrightshire continues to be used as a registration county for land registration. A lower-tier district called Stewartry covered the majority of the historic county from 1975 to 1996. The area of Stewartry district is still used as a lieutenancy area. Dumfries and Galloway Council also has a Stewartry area committee. Kirkcudbrightshire forms the eastern part of the medieval lordship of Galloway, which retained a degree of autonomy until it was fully absorbed by Scotland in the 13th century. In 1369, the part of Galloway east of the River Cree was placed under the control of a steward based in Kirkcudbright and so that area became known as the "Stewartry of Kirkcudbright". The rest of Galloway remained under the authority of a sheriff based in Wigtown, and so became known as Wigtownshire. Kirkcudbrightshire was occasionally referred to as East Galloway. It is bounded on the north by Ayrshire, on the west by Wigtownshire, on the south by the Irish Sea and Solway Firth, and on the east by Dumfriesshire. The county town is Kirkcudbright. (en)

Wybrzeże przeważająco urwiste, rozczłonkowane przez estuaria rzek Nith, , Dee, i . Większa część hrabstwa położona była na obszarze Wyżyny Południowoszkockiej. Północno-zachodnią część hrabstwa zajmowało pasmo górskie , w jego obrębie najwyższy szczyt – Merrick (843 m n.p.m.). Krajobraz pofałdowany, poprzecinany licznymi dolinami. Powierzchnia hrabstwa w 1887 roku – 2325 km², w 1951 roku – 2323 km² (3% terytorium Szkocji). Liczba ludności w 1887 roku – 42 127, w 1951 roku – 30 725 (0,6% populacji Szkocji). Hrabstwo znajdowało się dawniej we władaniu , posiadających szeroką autonomię. Do XIV wieku zachowało odrębny od reszty Szkocji kodeks prawny. Podporządkowane władzy królewskiej zostało w 1455 roku, w okresie panowania Jakuba II. Reprezentantem władzy królewskiej na terytorium hrabstwa był namiestnik (steward), a nie – jak w innych hrabstwach – szeryf, stąd wariantowa nazwa tego hrabstwa to „namiestnictwo” (The Stewartry). Głównymi ośrodkami miejskimi były Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie, , New Galloway i . Do głównych gałęzi lokalnej gospodarki należały hodowla bydła, rybołówstwo, wydobycie granitu, przemysł włókienniczy i papierniczy. Do lokalnych zabytków należą ruiny cysterskich klasztorów z XII wieku i z XIII wieku. Kirkcudbrightshire otoczone było przez hrabstwa Dumfriesshire na wschodzie, Ayrshire na północy i Wigtownshire na zachodzie. Z tym ostatnim tworzy krainę historyczną Galloway. Zlikwidowane w wyniku reformy administracyjnej w 1975 roku, weszło w skład regionu administracyjnego Dumfries and Galloway. (pl)
