Das Buch nach William Shakespeares Komödie der Irrungen schrieb George Abbott, der die Show auch produzierte und Regie führte. Die Choreografie erarbeitete George Balanchine. Das Stück gilt als erste Musical-Vertonung eines Shakespeare-Werkes am Broadway. Der Titel ist eine Anspielung auf die Shubert Brothers, die mächtigsten Theaterproduzenten am Broadway, die aus dem New Yorker Städtchen Syracuse stammten. Die Uraufführung fand am 23. November 1938 im Alvin Theatre in New York statt und erreichte 235 Vorstellungen. Ein Off-Broadway-Revival 1963/64 im Theatre Four brachte es auf 500 Vorstellungen. Die Londoner West End-Premiere hatte das Musical am 7. November 1963 im Drury Lane Theatre. Die deutschsprachige Erstaufführung, vom 24.
