ABSTRACT
Two field experiments were conducted at Kaha Vegetables Research Farm, Horticulture Research Institute, Agriculture Research Centre during 2011/2012and 2012/2013 winter seasons to investigate the effect of colored plastic mulches(black-red-blue) and harvest dates(100, 110 and 120 DAP) on yield, yield components and tuber quality as well as chemical constituents of potato cv. Diamant. The obtained results showed that there were differences among the tested colored plastic mulches in yield and its components as well as chemical constituents. Obtained data indicated that, the tubers yield and its components significantly affected. Although, the lowest values were obtained as a result of using bare soil treatment. The one harvest date (100 DAP) gave the lowest values in the yield and its components as well as chemical constituents of potato tubers. Moreover, the differences between the two and three harvest dates not reach to significance level in the most of yield and its components. However, the highest value was recorded to the third harvest time.

Two field experiments were conducted at Kaha Vegetables Research Farm, Horticulture Research Institute, Agriculture Research Centre during 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 winter seasons to investigate the effect of colored plastic mulches (black-red-blue) on germination, growth and production stages, as well as, chemical constituents of potato cv. Diamant.
The obtained results showed that there were differences among the tested colored plastic mulches in germination, vegetative growth aspects, yield and its components, as well as, chemical constituents. Obtained data indicated also that, the black plastic mulch produced higher soil temperatures while the red polyethylene mulch apparently showed highest moisture (23.45%), followed by black (22.75%) and blue (20.88 %) polyethylene mulch. The black mulch was significantly increase in germination rate and number of stems per plant, whereas; red mulch exhibited the highest values in all studied growth traits, marketable yield and its quality. Although, the lowest values were obtained as a result of using bare soil treatment. The highest gross return 50333 LE. /fed. was found from red polyethylene mulch and the lowest gross return 19523 LE./fed. was obtained from the bare soil treatment. Red polyethylene mulch gave the highest net return 36883 LE. Followed by black mulch 32043 LE.

Institute, Agriculture Research Centre during 2011and 2012 summer seasons to investigate the effect of water
stress combined with glycinebetaine (GB), magnesium carbonate (MgCo3) and defoliation on vegetative growth,
yield and it’s quality as well as chemical constituents of taro plants cv Egyptian. The obtained results showed
that there were differences among the tested irrigation regimes and GB, MgCo3 and defoliation treatment in
vegetative growth, yield and its components as well as chemical constituents. Obtained data indicated that,
surface irrigation or drip irrigation at 100 % of Field capacity (FC) gave the highest results in the most of
vegetative growth, yield and its components compared with other treatments. Foliar spray of GB at the rate of

The experiment was conducted during two successive winter seasons of 2010/011 and 2011/012, at
the vegetables research farm of Kaha, Kalyoubia Gov. Egypt, to investigate the performance comparison of
three alternatives for gibberellic acid (GA3), i.e., Silicon (Si), Citric acid (CA) and vitamin E (VE) as a solo or
mixture with others on growth characters, chemical constituents, each of early, late and total yield and its
components of globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) cv. French. Obtained results indicated that, different
sprayed treatments, i.e. Si, VE and CA each of them at 50 ppm added separately or in a combination,
significantly improved all measured growth aspects, early and late yield and its quality compared with untreated
control. On the other hand, the GA3 produced the highest values in shoots height aspect. Whereas, foliar spray
of Si either solo or in combined with VE, significantly increased number of leaves/plant, leaf area, number of
offshoots/plant and dry weight of leaves. The maximum early heads number per plant, average head weight and
total early yield were obtained due to foliar spray of GA3 at 50 ppm with no significant differences in head
length, head weight and receptacle weight compared with the (Si +VE) treatment. On the other hand, foliar

Garlic cultivars Egyptian and Sids-40 and three genotypes i.e., Chinese, Italian and Brazilian were evaluated for their
productivity in two field experiments to determine the genetic divers during winter seasons of 2012/2013 and
2013/2014. The results showed that the uppermost plant height was 100.0 and 96.3 cm for Egyptian cultivar (Balady) in
both seasons, respectively. The maximum value of leaves number were detected with Sids-40 while the largest leaf area
per plant were recorded to Chinese genotype. Moreover, Chinese genotype was also greater than other cultivars and
genotypes in total plant and leaves fresh and dry weight. Howeve, rthe highest chlorophyll content was obtained by
Brazilian genotype. Whereas, the highest cloves number per bulb were produced by Egyptian and Brazilian genotype,
respectively. The highest bulb diameter, average bulb weight and average clove weight were achieved by Chines genotype
compared with other cultivars and genotypes tested. The greatest TSS and allicin contents in cloves and bulbs of garlic
were found in cv. Egyptian (Balady) followed by Brazilian genotype in case of allicin content. Whereas, the marketable
. yield weight was observed by Chinese and Sids-40
Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) was assayed to determine the genetic diversity of 5 garlic genotypes. Six ISSR primers
were used in current investigation. A high level of polymorphism among garlic genotypes was found with ISSR marker
number 6 that also showed amplicons with all garlic genotypes under study. Our results indicate that ISSR can be useful
for genetic diversity studies, to provide practical information for parental selection and to assist breeding and conservation
strategies Also, the present results along with those of other researchers show that ISSRs can be used for cultivar

An experiment was conducted in research farm of Kaha, Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Kalubia
governorate, Egypt in winter season of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 to study the effects of different planting
dates, cultivars and growing degree days (GDD) on vegetative growth, yield and its components of garlic. The
experiment was a split plot design with three replications. The planting date at four different times (Sep.25, Oct.
10, Oct. 25 and Nov. 10) made the main plot and three cultivars (Balady, Sids-40 and White super) constituted
the sub-plot. The Maximum and minimum Temperature was recorded during growing season to calculate
accumulative growing degree days (GDD). The obtained results showed that planting date on 25th Sep. combined
with all cvs. recorded the highest germination percentage in both seasons whereas, the late planting date
(November 10) gave the lowest germination percentage. The Balady cultivar was minimum GDD accumulation
when it was emerged after 18.67 day from planting. The 25th Sep. planting date significantly produced higher
means on plant height, number of leaves per plant and leaves weight per plant in the first and second seasons.
The super white cultivar combine with planting date Sep. 25 has the height GDD about 1929 and 1345 unit for
the two seasons. The yield and its components was increased under early planting date furthermore, under late
planting date conditions the yield and its components were significantly decreased. The plating date on Sep. 25
was the highest yield and GDD accumulated compared to other planting date on the 2010-11 and 2011-12
seasons. The lowest yield and GDD was observed by planting on 10th Nov. in first and second seasons. The
White super cultivar produced the highest yield due to increase GDD accumulated followed by Sids-40.
Whereas, cv. Balady produce the lower most bulb yield and less GDD in the first and second seasons. The N, P
and K contents in the garlic bulbs were increased when garlic seed cloves planted on 25th Sep. However, the

This work was carried out at a private farm in Tokh, Kalubia, Gov., Egypt during the two successive seasons of 2013/14 and 2014/15, using randomized complete block design with three replications to study the effect of pre-soaking seed cloves and foliar spray of silicon (Si), selenium (Se) concentrations and their combinations on germination, early seedlings growth, marketable and total green yield as well as chemical constituents of garlic planted under high temperature conditions of late summer (End of August). The results of this study showed that planting garlic under high temperature stress lead to drop in both rate and speed of germination, which reflected on growth and yield. However, soaking seed cloves in 4 mg/L silicon and/or 2 mg/L selenium solutions significantly increased in each of percentage, speed and coefficient velocity of germination as well as seed vigor index compared with untreated control. The soaking seed cloves in silicon at 4 mg/L. was found to produce more increase in germination index and early seedlings growth compared to selenium at 2 mg/L. The highest values of bulb characters, marketable and total green yield, as well as chemical constituents were achieved with application both Si and Se together as combination in a mixture.

Two field experiments were conducted under Egyptian conditions at Kaha Vegetables Research Farm, Horticulture Research Institute, Agriculture Research Centre to study the effect of the high nitrogen and potassium levels and two growth regulators, Cytokinin at 2.5 ppm and Gibberellic Acid (GA3) at 100 ppm on the growth and seed yield of garlic (Allium sativum L.) cv. Sids 40. The obtained results showed that increasing nitrogen and potassium fertilizer up to 150 % NK. of the recommended rate (120 kg N + 72 kg K2O fed-1), significantly improved most studied growth traits (plant length, number of leaves, leaf area, total fresh weight, total plant dry weight), bulb characters, chemical constituents, yield, and yield components. Moreover, 150 % NK combined with GA3 + CPPU foliar spraying resulted in the highest average bulb weight, average glove weight and bulb. The obtained results confirm that garlic seed yield could be improve by N, K nutrition and foliar application of GA3 and CPPU.

These experiments were carried out during two successive winter seasons of 2011/012 and 2012/013 on globe artichoke cv. French. The plants were grown at Kaha Qalubia Gov. Egypt, under clay loam soil and surface irrigation system, to investigate the effect of nitrogen levels (100, 75 and 50 % of the recommended dose, Sodium nitroprusside concentrations as foliar spray of 0.0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 mM/L. and their interaction on vegetative growth, heads quality, early, middle and late yield as well as nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and nitrate accumulation of globe artichoke. The obtained results showed that increasing the nitrogen level up to 400 kg ammonium nitrate/fed., in general significantly enhanced the growth parameters, heads quality, early, middle and late heads yield as well as chemical constituents, but negatively influenced the NO3-N and NUE. The contra results were obtained when globe artichoke plants were sprayed by sodium nitroprusside at the lowest level (0.05 mM/L.) with low values of NO3-N and high NUE compared with the highest concentration. The combination between 100 % of the recommended dose of nitrogen (400 kg ammonium nitrate/fed.) with the low concentration of SNP (0.05 mM/L.) produced the best results on vegetative growth characteristics, head and receptacle quality, early, middle and late heads yield per plant and ton/fed. as well as chemical constituents. Whereas, there were no significant differences between using 400 and 300 kg ammonium nitrate/fed. when each of them combined separately with 0.05 mM/L. of SNP on most cases of vegetative growth, all head and receptacle characters as well as early, middle and late heads yield per plant and per fed. in both seasons. However, the nitrogen use efficiency was increased and nitrate content of heads was significantly decreased when artichoke plants supplied with the second nitrogen level (300 kg ammonium nitrate /fed.) combined with the second concentration of SNP (0.05 mM/L.).

The obtained results showed that cut off irrigation for short period (4 weeks before harvest) significantly increased the average tuber weight, average yield/plant, marketable, unmarketable and total yield/fed. However, the cut of irrigation for long period (7 weeks before harvest) produced the highest dry matter percentage of tubers and the lowest values of unmarketable yield. Moreover, the application of each of CN, MS and BA enhanced the total yield and its components, whereas, the combination between the three nutrients produced the best results, compared to each of them alone. The interaction between the long period of cut off irrigation (7 weeks before harvest) and applying CN + MS+ BA together resulted in the lowest weight loss and decay percentage of tubers during storage period and the highest inulin, total carbohydrates, Ca and Mg contents of the tubers. Conclusively, from these results it can be concluded that the cut off irrigation for a short period (4 weeks before harvest) exist beneficial effect in preharvest performance of Jerusalem artichoke plants, but cut of irrigation for a long period (7 weeks before harvest) was effective in post-harvest. The maximum average tuber weight, total, marketable, and unmarketable yields were obtained from the cut off irrigation for short period, while, the highest dry matter percentage of tubers and the lowest values of unmarketable yield were achieved by cutting of irrigation for a long period. Application of Ca + Mg + B together gave beneficial effect on the most tubers characteristics, marketable and total yields, as well as, reduces the percentages of weight loss and decay in tubers during storage period.
This study discuss the effect of spacing between plants (15 and 25 cm), dipping the tubers in GA3 (0, 2.5 and 5.0 ppm) and foliar application of 0, 45 or 90 ppm paclobutrazol (PBZ) on production of seed potato under Egyptian condition.

Egypt during the two successive seasons of 2012 & 2013 to investigate the effect of some agricultural
treatments, i.e., cutting and moving foliage beside control on yield and its components, as well as, chemical
constituents of four sweet potato cultivars (Mabrouka, Minufiya 6, Minufiya 10 and cv. 195A).The obtained
data indicated that the highest values for total yield per plant and feddan as well as marketable yield per feddan
were achieved for cv. Minufiya 6 while the lowest values were detected for Minufiya 10. Data also showed that
Minufiya 6 cultivar scored the highest length and diameter of tuber root as well as chemical constituents, i.e.,
NPK, protein and carbohydrates. 195A cultivar gave the highest number of tuber roots per plant, shape index of
tuber roots, dry matter and starch percentages. Concerning the agricultural treatments, results indicated that
defoliation led to the lowest yield and its components; tuber roots characters and chemical components.
However, agricultural treatments had non-significant differences on shape index during the two growing
seasons. In a view of the interactions between cultivars and the other treatments, control and moving foliage
interacted with Minufiya 6 as well as Mabrouka combined with the same treatments reflected the highest total
yield per plant and feddan. However, Minufiya 6 x control and moving foliage significantly scored the highest
marketable yield per feddan. In addition, Minufiya 6 x control gave the highest values of tuber roots number,
tuber roots weight, N, P and K, carbohydrates and protein percentages while moving the foliage had the best
tuber root length and shape index when interacted with cv. Minufiya 6 and cv. 195A respectively. Control
treatment combined with cv. 195A gave the best results in number of tuber roots, dry matter content and starch.
In general, results declared that cutting treatment led to the highest reduction in yield and its components
followed by moving foliage and the degree of deficiency differed depending on the cultivar.

Two pot experiments were conducted to study differential response of some potato varieties (Diamant,
Lady Rosetta and Spunta) to irrigation with different saline water levels. After completing emergence (30 days
after planting) potato varieties were irrigated with saline water at concentrations of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 dS/m
beside the control 0.4 dS/m (tap water). The results showed that all measured growth characteristics were
gradually decreased when potato plants were irrigated with saline water up to 6.0 dS/m. Saline treatments
decreased significantly stem length, number of leaves, leaves dry weight, tuber dry weight, total plant dry
weight and leaf area per plant. Higher saline levels, i.e., 4.5 or 6.0 dS/m caused a significant reduction in tuber

This study was conducted during two seasons of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 at Vegetables Research Farm in Kaha, Qualiobia Governorate, Horticulture Research Institute, Agriculture Research Centre to study the effect of some essential oils (citronella and lemon grass) and plant extracts of (aloe and garlic) compared to GA3 on vegetative growth, earliness, yield and its quality of globe artichoke cv. Hyriouswas. Planting dates was on September 1st in both seasons. The essential oils of citronella grass and lemon grass, plant extracts of aloe and garlic, GA3 at 25 ppm and the control were sprayed in different concentrations two times in each season after 60 and 75 day from planting.
Results revealed considerable improvements in earliness, the early yield as well as head length (cm), head diameter (cm), edible part fresh weight (g) and edible part dry weight (g) by the tested materials. Spraying with aloe extract 50 ml/l or citronella grass oil 0.5 ml/l gave the best results in this concern.

Two experiments were carried out to study the possibility of production of improved potato seeds under Egyptian conditions. The first experiment was conducted in fall season to compare between improved seeds produced from three imported varieties (Diamant, Spunta and Lady Rosetta) in summer seasons (2012 and 2013) under control in Kaha research station and seeds produced by farmers in Kafr El-Zayat (KZ). The second experiment was performed in summer season (2013 and 2014) to compare the improved seeds produced from three varieties in previous summer seasons (2012 and 2013) with imported seeds. Detection of the most important potato viruses (potato leafroll virus; PLRV, potato virus Y; PVY, potato virus X; PVX and alfalfa mosaic virus; AMV) were carried out on potato leaves and tubers using ELISA and RT-PCR for the detection of these viruses. Specific primer pairs designed to amplify the coat protein gene of each virus (627 bp for PLRV, 801 bp for PVY, 714 bp for PVX and 666 bp for AMV) were successfully applied. The obtained data indicated that virus- infection incidence percentage was increased in KZ potato seeds. Most vegetative growth and yield characteristics were significantly higher in Spunta cultivar. Meanwhile, Diamant cultivar gave the highest value for leaf number per plant, number of tuber/plant, number of main stems at 75 DAP and number of tubers per plant at harvest time. Conversely, Lady Rosetta gave the highest dry matter percentage of tubers for both fall seasons. These experiments were carried out during two successive summer seasons of 2013 and 2014 on Jerusalem artichoke cv. Feusa. The plants were grown at Kaha Vegetables Res. Farm, Hort. Res. Inst., Agric. Res. Centre, under clay loam soil with using surface irrigation system, to study the effect of boron, copper and humic acid on vegetative growth, yield and its components, chemical constituents and storability of Jerusalem artichoke tubers. The experiment including 9 treatments ( foliar spray with 70 and 140 ppm boron, 50 and 100 ppm copper, 0.5 and 1 g/l humic acid as foliar application and 0.5 and 1 g/l humic acid as soil application beside of the control treatment ( spraying with water). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates.
The obtained results showed that the highest value of plant height was recorded by the plants which for sprayed with 50 or 100 ppm copper. While the plants which sprayed with 140 ppm boron gave the highest number of main stems per plant. Application of humic acid 1 g/l as soil application increased dry weight of foliage, number of tubers, yield per plant and total yield per feddan. Moreover, sprayed plants with 140 ppm boron treated plants with 1 g/l humic acid as soil application produced more average tuber weight than the other tested treatments. Chemical composition (N, P, K, Total carbohydrates and inulin contents) of Jerusalem artichoke was significantly affected with application all treatments than control treatment. The results also confirmed that weight loss and decay percentage in Jerusalem artichoke tubers increased with prolongation of storage period.

Two field experiments were conducted at Kaha Vegetables Research Farm, Horticulture Research Institute, Agriculture Research Centre during 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 winter seasons to investigate the effect of colored plastic mulches (black-red-blue) on germination, growth and production stages, as well as, chemical constituents of potato cv. Diamant. The obtained results showed that there were differences among the tested colored plastic mulches in germination, vegetative growth aspects, yield and its components, as well as, chemical constituents. Obtained data indicated also that, the black plastic mulch produced higher soil temperatures while the red polyethylene mulch apparently showed highest moisture (23.45%), followed by black (22.75%) and blue (20.88 %) polyethylene mulch. The black mulch was significantly increased in germination rate and number of stems per plant, whereas; red mulch exhibited the highest values in all studied growth traits, marketable yield and its quality. Although, the lowest values were obtained as a result of using bare soil treatment. The highest gross return 50333 LE. /fed. was found from red polyethylene mulch and the lowest gross return 19523 LE./fed. was obtained from the bare soil treatment. Red polyethylene mulch gave the highest net return 36883 LE. Followed by black mulch 32043 LE.
