Layered materials that exhibit magnetic ordering in their pristine form are very rare. Several standard approaches, such as adsorption of atoms, introduction of point defects, and edge engineering, have been developed to induce magnetism in two-dimensional materials. In this way, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer TiS$_2$ doped with 3$d$ transition metals (TMs) atoms in both octahedral 1T and trigonal prismatic 1H structures using first-principles calculations. In its pristine form, TiS$_2$ is a non-magnetic semiconductor. The bands near the Fermi energy primarily exhibit $d$ orbital characters, and due to the presence of ideal octahedral and trigonal arrangements, they are well separated from other bands with $p$ character. Upon substituting 3$d$-TM atoms in both structures, a variety of electronic and magnetic phases emerge, including magnetic semiconductor, magnetic half-metal, non-magnetic metal, and magnetic metal. Chromium exhibits the largest magnetic moment in both the 1T and 1H structures. The 1T structure shows a slightly higher magnetic moment of 3.419 $μ_B$ compared to the 1H structure 3.138 $μ_B$, attributed to the distorted octahedral structure of the 1T structure. Unlike pristine TiS$_2$, the deficiency in saturation of neighboring S atoms in the presence of impurities leads to the proximity of energy levels of $d$ and $p$ states, resulting in unexpectedly sizable magnetic moments. Another interesting case is Cobalt, which leads to a magnetic moment of approximately 0.805 $μ_B$ in the 1H structure, while the Co exhibits a non-magnetic state in the 1H structure. These materials demonstrate a high degree of tunability and can be optimized for various magnetic applications.

Experimental observations of anisotropic tightly bound excitons in black phosphorene, and correlated phenomena such as room temperature magnetically active edges in phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs), sparked discussions on the controversial screening of the Coulomb interaction in phosphorene-based materials. In this way, we investigate the first-principles electronic screening of the long-range Coulomb interaction in phosphorene from bulk to nanoribbon by employing ab initio calculations in conjunction with the constrained random-phase approximation. The bands near Fermi energy (E_F) are predominantly pz orbital characters, and due to the puckering, they are not well separated from the other bands with s, px, and specially py characters. This proximity in energy levels increases the contribution of px/py $\rightarrow$ pz transitions to the polarization function and significantly alters the Coulomb parameters. In semiconducting systems, the on-site Coulomb interaction values (Hubbard U) range from 4.1 to 6.5 eV and depend on the correlated subspace, electronic structure, nanoribbon's width, and edge passivation. Our long-range interaction has revealed a non-conventional screening in semiconducting nanoribbons. We have discovered that screening actually enhances the electron-hole interaction for separations larger than a critical distance r_c, which is contrary to what was previously seen in conventional semiconductors. In unpassivated zigzag nanoribbons, due to a metallic screening channel stemming from quasi-flat edge bands at E_F, we find U/W_b > 1 (the bandwidth W_b) and large gradient of inter-site Coulomb interactions, making them correlated materials. We have investigated the instability of the paramagnetic state of bare ZPNRs toward ferromagnetism using a Stoner model based on the calculated Hubbard U parameters.

Correlated phenomena such as magnetism and Mott phase are a very controversial issue in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). With the aim of finding the value of correlation strength and understanding the origin of ferromagnetic order in TMDCs, we first identify relevant low-energy degrees of freedom on both octahedral T and trigonal prismatic H lattices in MX2 (M=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; X=S, Se, Te) and then determine the strength of the effective Coulomb interactions between localized d electrons from the first principles using the constrained random-phase approximation. The on-site Coulomb interaction (Hubbard U) values lie in the range 1.4-3.7 eV (1.1-3.6 eV) and depend on the ground-state electronic structure, d-electron number, and correlated subspace. For most of the TMDCs we obtain 1 < U/W_b < 2 (the bandwidth W_b), which turn out to be larger than the corresponding values in elementary transition metals. On the basis of the calculated U and exchange J interaction, we have checked the condition to be fulfilled for the formation of the ferromagnetic order by Stoner criterion. The results indicate that experimentally observed MnX2 (X=S, Se) and VX2 (X=S, Se) have an intrinsic ferromagnetic behavior in pristine form, although V-based materials are close vicinity to the critical point separating ferromagnetic from paramagnetic phase.

Experimental observations of large exciton binding energies and non-hydrogenic Rydberg series in 2D semiconducting TMDs, along with deviations in plasmon dispersion in 2D metallic TMDs, suggest the presence of a nonconventional screening of the Coulomb interaction. The experimentally observed Mott insulating state in the charge density wave (CDW) reconstructed lattice of TMDs containing 4d and 5d elements further confirms the presence of strong Coulomb interactions in these systems. In this study, we use first-principles electronic structure calculations and constrained random-phase approximation to calculate the Coulomb interaction parameters (partially screened U and fully screened W) between localized $d$ electrons in 2D TMDs. We specifically explore materials represented by the formula MX2 (M=Nb, Ta, Mo, W, and X=S, Se, Te) and consider three different phases (1H, 1T, and 1T'). Our results show that the short-range interactions are strongly screened in all three phases, whereas the long-range interactions remain significant even in metallic systems. This nonconventional screening provides a compelling explanation for the deviations observed in the usual hydrogenic Rydberg series and conventional plasmon dispersion in 2D semiconducting and metallic TMDs, respectively. Our calculations yield on-site Coulomb interaction parameters U within the ranges of 0.8-2.5 eV, 0.8-1.9 eV, and 0.9-2.4 eV for the 1H, 1T, and 1T' structures, respectively. Furthermore, our findings indicate a substantially high ratio of on-site effective Coulomb interaction to bandwidth (U_eff/W_b >> 1) in CDW TMDs, providing robust evidence for the experimentally observed strongly correlated Mott phase.

We decipher the microscopic mechanism of the formation of tilt in the two-dimensional Dirac cone of $8Pmmn$ borphene. In our ab-initio calculations, we identify relevant low-energy degrees of freedom on the $8Pmmn$ lattice and find that these atomic orbitals reside on an effective honeycomb lattice (inner sites), while the high-energy degrees of freedom reside on the rest of the $8Pmmn$ lattice (ridge sites). Integrating out the high-energy atomic orbitals, gives rise to remarkably large effective further neighbor hoppings on the coarse grained "honeycomb graph" of inner sites that determine the location and tilt of the Dirac cone. Molecular orbitals -- that can be modified by atomic manipulations -- are responsible for the creation of further neighbor edges on the honeycomb graph that controls the tilt of the resulting Dirac cone. This leads to an effective tight-binding model on a parent honeycomb graph that facilitates numerical modeling of various effects such as disorder/interactions/symmetry-breaking for tilted Dirac cone fermions. Since the tilt is a proxy to spacetime metric, our result offers a robust perspective on the fabrication of desired emergent spacetime structure and synthesis of geometric forces at ambient conditions that are likely to enhance our control on the movement of electrons in electric/optical devices.

We calculate the strength of the effective onsite Coulomb interaction (Hubbard $U$) in two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal (TM) dihalides MX$_2$ and trihalides MX$_3$ (M=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; X=Cl, Br, I) from first principles using the constrained random-phase approximation. The correlated subspaces are formed from $t_{2g}$ or $e_g$ bands at the Fermi energy. Elimination of the efficient screening taking place in these narrow bands gives rise to sizable interaction parameters U between the localized $t_{2g}$ ($e_g$) electrons. Due to this large Coulomb interaction, we find $U/W >1$ (with the band width $W$) in most TM halides, making them strongly correlated materials. Among the metallic TM halides in paramagnetic state, the correlation strength $U/W$ reaches a maximum in NiX$_2$ and CrX$_3$ with values much larger than the corresponding values in elementary TMs and other TM compounds. Based on the Stoner model and the calculated $U$ and $J$ values, we discuss the tendency of the electron spins to order ferromagnetically.

Based on analytical and numerical approaches, we investigate thermodynamic properties of CuSe2O5 at high magnetic fields which is a candidate for the strong intra-chain interaction in quasi one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnets. Magnetic behavior of the system can be described by the 1D spin-1/2 XXZ model in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Un- der these circumstances, there is one quantum critical field in this compound. Below the quantum critical field the spin chain system is in the gapless Luttinger liquid (LL) regime, whereas above it one observes a crossover to the gapped saturation magnetic phase. Indications on the thermodynamic curves confirm the occurrence of such a phase transition. The main characteristics of the LL phase are gapless and spin-spin correlation functions decay algebraic. The effects of zero-temperature quantum phase transition are observed even at rather high temperatures in comparison with the counterpart compounds. In addition, we calculate the Wilson ratio in the model. The Wilson ratio at a fixed temperature remains almost independent of the field in the LL region. In the vicinity of the quantum critical field, the Wilson ratio increases and exhibits anomalous enhancement.

We consider the spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with ferromagnetic (FM) interactions along legs and rungs. Using the stochastic series expansion QMC method, we study the low-temperature magnetic behavior of the system. An isolated spin-1/2 FM two-leg ladder is in the gapped saturated FM phase at zero temperature. As soon as the spin-1/2 FM two-leg ladders are connected with antiferromagnetic (AFM) inter-ladder interaction, a first-order commensurate-incommensurate quantum phase transition occurs in the ground state magnetic phase diagram. In fact a jump in the magnetization curve is observed. We found that, coupled spin-1/2 FM two-leg ladders are in a nonmagnetic phase at zero temperature. Applying a magnetic field, the ground state of coupled spin-1/2 FM two-leg ladders remains in the nonmagnetic phase up to a quantum saturate critical field.

We study the effect of inter-ladder ferromagnetic (FM) coupling in spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with antiferromagnetic (AFM) legs and rungs interactions using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo. We have compared the results with the experimental measurement on Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ cuprate which is the candidate for spin-1/2 AFM two-leg ladders with FM inter-ladder interaction. A remarkable asymptotic behavior of susceptibility is observed at very low temperature. In the absence of the magnetic field, thermodynamic behavior of an individual spin-1/2 two-leg ladder is similar to coupled one up to $-0.5J_{leg}$ interaction. But, the gaped phase is not clear in the $J_{in}=-0.2 J_{leg}$ of FM coupled two-leg ladder even at low magnetic fields, which shows that the inter-ladder FM interaction can induce a new quantum ordered gapless phase at zero temperature.
