Abstract:
We report heavy electron behavior in unconventional superconductor YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ ($T_C \,{=}\, 1.2$ K). The flat bands reside at the X points of the Brillouin zone and are composed principally of $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. We utilize many-body perturbative theory, GW, to calculate the electronic structure of this material, obtaining excellent agreement with the ARPES data with relatively minor band renormalizations and band shifting required. We obtain further agreement at the Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) level, highlighting the emergence of the many-body physics at low energies (near $E_F$) and temperatures.

BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is a structural analog of the pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which, like the iron-based superconductors, hosts a variety of ordered phases including charge density waves (CDWs), electronic nematicity, and superconductivity. Upon isovalent Sr substitution on the Ba site, the charge and nematic orders are suppressed, followed by a sixfold enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). To understand the mechanisms responsible for enhancement of $T_c$, we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of the Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$Ni$_2$As$_2$ series, which agree well with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the substitution range. Analysis of our ARPES-validated DFT results indicates a Lifshitz transition and reasonably nested electron and hole Fermi pockets near optimal substitution where $T_c$ is maximum. These nested pockets host Ni $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ orbital compositions, which we associate with the enhancement of nematic fluctuations, revealing unexpected connections to the iron-pnictide superconductors. This gives credence to a scenario in which nematic fluctuations drive an enhanced $T_c$.

Based on DFT calculations, we present the basic electronic structure of CuPb9(PO4)6O (Cu-doped lead apatite, LK-99), in two scenarios: (1) where the structure is constrained to the P3 symmetry and (2) where no symmetry is imposed. At the DFT level, the former is predicted to be metallic while the latter is found to be a charge-transfer insulator. In both cases the filling of these states is nominally d9, consistent with the Cu2+ valence state, and Cu with a local magnetic moment ~0.7mB. In the metallic case we find these states to be unusually flat (0.2 eV dispersion), giving high DOS at EF that we argue can be a host for novel electronic physics, including potentially high temperature superconductivity. The flatness of the bands is the likely origin of symmetry-lowering gapping possibilities that would remove the spectral weight from EF. Since some experimental observations show metallic/semiconducting behavior, we propose that disorder is responsible for closing the gap. We consider a variety of possibilities that could possibly close the gap, but limit consideration to kinds of disorder that preserve electron count. For all possibilities we considered (spin disorder, O on vacancy sites, Cu on different Pb sites), the local Cu moment, and consequently the gap remains robust. We conclude that disorder responsible for metallic behavior entails some kind of doping where the electron count changes. We claim that the emergence of the flat bands should be due to weak wave function overlap between the Cu and O orbitals, owing to the directional character of the constituent orbitals. So, finding an appropriate host structure for minimizing hybridization between Cu and O while allowing them to still weakly interact should be a promising route for generating flat bands at EF which can lead to interesting electronic phenomena, regardless of whether LK-99 is a room-temperature superconductor.

We investigate the relationship between nanoscale defects and electronic structure, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Kelvin probe microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Our results provide a roadmap and platform for developing 3D WSMs for device applications.

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of the prototypical nearly-free-electron metal sodium. The observed mass enhancement is slightly smaller than that derived in previous studies. The new results on the lifetime broadening increase the demand for theories beyond the random phase approximation. Our results do not support the proposed strong enhancement of the scattering rates of the charge carriers due to a coupling to spin fluctuations. Moreover, a comparison with earlier electron energy-loss data on sodium yields a strong reduction of the mass enhancement of dipolar electron-hole excitations compared to that of monopole hole excitations, measured by ARPES.

As the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has provided a platform to investigate the interplay of band topology and magnetism as well as the emergent phenomena arising from such an interplay. Here we report the chemical-vapor-transport (CVT) growth and characterization of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, as well as the observation of the field-induced quantized Hall conductance in 6-layer devices. Through comparative studies between our CVT-grown and flux-grown MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ via magnetic, transport, scanning tunneling microscopy, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we find that CVT-grown MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is marked with higher Mn occupancy on the Mn site, slightly higher Mn$_{\rm{Bi}}$ antisites, smaller carrier concentration and a Fermi level closer to the Dirac point. Furthermore, a 6-layer device made from the CVT-grown sample shows by far the highest mobility of 2500 cm$^2$V$\cdot$s in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ devices with the quantized Hall conductance appearing at 1.8 K and 8 T. Our study provides a new route to obtain high-quality single crystals of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ that are promising to make superior devices and realize emergent phenomena, such as the layer Hall effect and quantized anomalous hall effect, etc.

Hybridization between $f$ electrons and conduction bands ($c$-$f$ hybridization) is a driving force for many unusual phenomena. To provide insight into it, systematic studies of CeCoIn$_5$ heavy fermion superconductor have been performed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in a large angular range at temperature of $T=6$ K. The used photon energy of 122 eV corresponds to Ce $4d$-$4f$ resonance. Calculations carried out with relativistic multiple scattering Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and one-step model of photoemission yielded realistic simulation of the ARPES spectra indicating that Ce-In surface termination prevails. Surface states, which have been identified in the calculations, contribute significantly to the spectra. Effects of the hybridization strongly depend on wave vector. They include a dispersion of heavy electrons and bands gaining $f$-electron character when approaching Fermi energy. We have also observed a considerable variation of $f$-electron spectral weight at $E_F$, which is normally determined by both matrix element effects and wave vector dependent $c$-$f$ hybridization. Fermi surface scans covering a few Brillouin zones revealed large matrix element effects. A symmetrization of experimental Fermi surface, which reduces matrix element contribution, yielded a specific variation of $4f$-electron enhanced spectral intensity at $E_F$ around $\barΓ$ and $\bar{M}$ points. Tight-binding approximation calculations for Ce-In plane provided the same universal distribution of $4f$-electron density for a range of values of the parameters used in the model.

We study single crystals of the magnetic superconductor EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ by magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electrical resistance in pulsed magnetic fields up to 630 kOe. The superconducting state below 36.5 K is almost isotropic and only weakly affected by the development of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic order at 15 K. On the other hand, for the external magnetic field applied along the c-axis the temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth reveals a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless topological transition below 15 K. This indicates that Eu$^{2+}$-planes are a good realization of a two-dimensional XY-magnet, which reflects the decoupling of the Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments from superconducting FeAs-layers.

We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of a series of hole and electron doped iron-based superconductors, their parent compound BaFe2As2, and their cousins BaCr2As2 and BaCo2As2. We focus on the energy (E) dependent scattering rate Gamma(E) as a function of the 3d count and on the renormalization function Z(E) of the inner hole pocket, which is the hot spot in these compounds. We obtain a non-Fermi-liquid-like linear in energy scattering rate Gamma(E>> kBT), independent of the dopant concentration. The main result is that the slope beta=Gamma(E >> kBT)/E, reaches its maxima near optimal doping and scales with the superconducting transition temperature. This supports the spin fluctuation model for superconductivity for these materials. In the optimally hole-doped compound, the slope of the scattering rate of the inner hole pocket is about three times bigger than the Planckian limit Gamma(E)/E~1. This result together with the energy dependence of the renormalization function Z(E) signals very incoherent charge carriers in the normal state which transform at low temperatures to a coherent unconventional superconducting state.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals effects of electron doping, which is realized by Co and Ni substitution for Fe in FeTe$_{1-y}$Se$_{y}$ (y$\sim$0.35) superconductor. The data show consistent band shifts as well as expansion and shrinking of electron and hole Fermi surface, respectively. Doping of either element leads to a Lifshitz transition realized as a removal of one or two hole pockets. This explains qualitatively a complex behavior of Hall coefficient observed before [Bezusyy, et al., Phys. Rev. B 91, 100502 (2015)], including change of sign with doping, which takes place only below room temperature. Assuming that Ni substitution should deliver twice more electrons to the valence band than Co, it appears that such transfer is slightly more effective in the case of Co. Therefore, charge doping cannot account for much stronger effect of Ni on superconducting and transport properties [Bezusyy, et al., Phys. Rev. B 91, 100502 (2015)]. Although overall band shifts are roughly proportional to the amount of dopant, clear deviations from a rigid band shift scenario are found. The shape of electron pockets becomes elliptical only for Ni doping, effective mass of electron bands increases with doping, strong reduction of effective mass is observed for one of hole bands of the undoped system. The topology of hole and electron pockets for superconducting Fe$_{1.01}$Te$_{0.67}$Se$_{0.33}$ with T$_{c}$=13.6 K indicates a deviation from nesting. Co and Ni doping causes further departure from nesting, which accompanies the reduction of critical temperature.

We study an electronic structure of CeRhSb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$ system, which displays quantum critical transition from a Kondo insulator to a non-Fermi liquid at $x=0.13$. We provide ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of valence band obtained at 12.5 K. Acoherent peak at the Fermi level is not present in the data, but a signal related to 4f$^1$$_{7/2}$ final state is detected. Spectral intensity at the Fermi edge has a general tendency to grow with Sn content. Theoretical calculations of band structure are realized with full-potential local-orbital minimum-basis code using scalar relativistic and full relativistic approach. The calculations reveal a depletion of density of states at the Fermi level for CeRhSb. This gap is shifted above the Fermi energy with increasing Sn content and thus a rise of density of states at the Fermi level is reflected in the calculations. It agrees with metallic properties of compounds with larger $x$. The calculations also yield another important effects of Sn substitution. Band structure is displaced in a direction corresponding to hole doping, although with deviations from a rigid band shift scenario. Lifshitz transitions modify a topology of the Fermi surface a few times and a number of bands crossing the Fermi level increases.

We report systematic studies of CeCu$_9$In$_2$, which appears to be a new Kondo lattice system. Electrical resistivity exhibits a logarithmic law characteristic of Kondo systems with a broad maximum at $T_{coh}\approx$45 K and it obeys the Fermi liquid theory at low temperature. Specific heat of CeCu$_9$In$_2$ is well described by the Einstein and Debye models with electronic part at high temperature. Fitting of the Schottky formula to low temperature 4f contribution to specific heat yielded crystal field splitting of 50.2 K between a doublet and quasi-quartet. The Schotte-Schotte model estimates roughly Kondo temperature as $T_K\approx$5 K, but does not reproduce well the data due to a sharp peak at 1.6 K. This structure should be attributed to a phase transition, a nature of which is possibly antiferromagnetic. Specific heat is characterized with increased Sommerfeld coefficient estimated as $γ\approx$132 mJ/(mole$\cdot$K$^2$). Spectra of the valence band, which have been collected with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), show a peak at binding energy$\approx$250 meV, which originates from the Ce 4f electrons and is related to the 4f$^1$$_{7/2}$ final state. Extracted 4f contribution to the spectral function exhibits also the enhancement of intensity in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Satellite structure of the Ce 3d levels spectra measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been analyzed within the framework of the Gunnarsson-Schönhammer theory. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (FPLO method with LDA+U approach) delivered densities of states, band structures and Fermi surfaces for CeCu$_9$In$_2$ and LaCu$_9$In$_2$. The results indicate that Fermi surface nesting takes place in CeCu$_9$In$_2$.

We investigated CeNi9In2 compound, which has been considered as a mixed valence (MV) system. Electrical resistivity vs. temperature variation was analysed in terms of the model proposed by Freimuth for systems with unstable 4f shell. At low temperature the resistivity dependence is consistent with a Fermi liquid state with a contribution characteristic of electron-phonon interaction. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) studies of the valence band did not reveal a Kondo peak down to 14 K. A difference of the spectra obtained with photon energies of low and high photoionization cross sections for Ce 4f electrons indicated that 4f states are located mainly close to the Fermi energy. The peaks related to f_{5/2}^1 and f_{7/2}^1 final states cannot be resolved but form a plateau between -0.3 eV and the Fermi energy. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) studies were realized for the cerium 3d level. The analysis of XPS spectra within the Gunnarsson-Shönhammer theory yielded a hybridization parameter of 104 meV and non-integer f level occupation, being close to 3. Calculations of partial densities of states were realized by a full potential local orbital (FPLO) method. They confirm that the valence band is dominated by Ni 3d states and are in general agreement with the experiment except for the behavior of f-electrons.
