We propose closed-form expressions of the distributions of magnetic quantum number $M$ and total angular momentum $J$ for three and four fermions in single-$j$ orbits. The latter formulas consist of polynomials with coefficients satisfying congruence properties. Such results, derived using doubly-recursive relations over $j$ and the number of fermions, enable us to deduce explicit expressions for the total number of levels in the case of three-, four- and five-fermion systems. We present applications of these formulas, such as sum rules for six-$j$ and nine-$j$ symbols, obtained from the connection with fractional-parentage coefficients, an alternative proof of the Ginocchio-Haxton relation or cancellation properties of the number of levels with a given angular momentum.

Rydberg atoms are ideal tools for quantum technologies. Due to their large size, their dipole-dipole interaction at micrometer-scale distances and their coupling to external fields are huge. Recent experiments vividly exhibit their interest for quantum simulation, in spite of limitations due to the relatively short lifetime of optically-accessible Rydberg levels. These limitations motivate a renewed interest for the long-lived circular Rydberg states . However, detecting them is so far either destructive or complex. Moreover, alkali circular states can be manipulated only by microwave fields, unable to address individual atoms. Alkaline earth circular states, with their optically active second valence electron, can circumvent these problems. Here we show how to use the electrostatic coupling between the two valence electrons of strontium to coherently manipulate a circular Rydberg state with optical pulses. We also use this coupling to map the state of the Rydberg electron onto that of the ionic core. This experiment opens the way to a state-selective spatially-resolved non-destructive detection of the circular states and, beyond, to the realization of a hybrid optical-microwave platform for quantum technology.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of the distribution of the total angular momentum in a relativistic configuration. Using cumulants and generating function formalism this analysis can be reduced to the study of individual subshells with $N$ equivalent electrons of momentum $j$. An expression as a nth-derivative is provided for the generating function of the $J$ distribution and efficient recurrence relations are established. It is shown that this distribution may be represented by a Gram-Charlier-like series which is derived from the corresponding series for the magnetic quantum number distribution. The numerical efficiency of this expansion is fair when the configuration consists of several subshells, while the accuracy is less good when only one subshell is involved. An analytical expression is given for the odd-order momenta while the even-order ones are expressed as a series which provides an acceptable accuracy though being not convergent. Such expressions may be used to obtain approximate values for the number of transitions in a spin-orbit split array: it is shown that the approximation is often efficient when few terms are kept, while some complex cases require to include a large number of terms.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of the distribution of the total magnetic quantum number $M$ in a relativistic subshell with $N$ equivalent electrons of momentum $j$. This distribution is analyzed through its cumulants and through their generating function, for which an analytical expression is provided. This function also allows us to get the values of the cumulants at any order. Such values are useful to obtain the moments at various orders. Since the cumulants of the distinct subshells are additive this study directly applies to any relativistic configuration. Recursion relations on the generating function are given. It is shown that the generating function of the magnetic quantum number distribution may be expressed as a n-th derivative of a polynomial. This leads to recurrence relations for this distribution which are very efficient even in the case of large $j$ or $N$. The magnetic quantum number distribution is numerically studied using the Gram-Charlier and Edgeworth expansions. The inclusion of high-order terms may improve the accuracy of the Gram-Charlier representation for instance when a small and a large angular momenta coexist in the same configuration. However such series does not exhibit convergence when high orders are considered and the account for the first two terms often provides a fair approximation of the magnetic quantum number distribution. The Edgeworth series offers an interesting alternative though this expansion is also divergent and of asymptotic nature.

We present three explicit formulas for the number of electronic configurations in an atom, i.e. the number of ways to distribute $Q$ electrons in $N$ subshells of respective degeneracies $g_1$, $g_2$, ..., $g_N$. The new expressions are obtained using the generating-function formalism. The first one contains sums involving multinomial coefficients. The second one relies on the idea of gathering subshells having the same degeneracy. A third one also collects subshells with the same degeneracy and leads to the definition of a two-variable generating function, allowing the derivation of recursion relations. Concerning the distribution of population on $N$ distinct subshells of a given degeneracy $g$, analytical expressions for the first moments of this distribution are given. The general case of subshells with any degeneracy is analyzed through the computation of cumulants. A fairly simple expression for the cumulants at any order is provided, as well as the cumulant generating function. Using Gram-Charlier expansion, simple approximations of the analyzed distribution in terms of a normal distribution multiplied by a sum of Hermite polynomials are given. The Edgeworth expansion has also been tested. Its accuracy is equivalent to the Gram-Charlier accuracy when few terms are kept, but it is much more rapidly divergent when the truncation order increases. While this analysis is illustrated by examples in atomic supershells it also applies to more general combinatorial problems such as fermion distributions.

A key limitation of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), an established and powerful tool for studying atomic-scale biomolecular structure and dynamics is its poor sensitivity, samples containing in excess of 10^12 labeled biomolecules are required in typical experiments. In contrast, single molecule measurements provide improved insights into heterogeneous behaviors that can be masked by ensemble measurements and are often essential for illuminating the molecular mechanisms behind the function of a biomolecule. We report EPR measurements of a single labeled biomolecule that merge these two powerful techniques. We selectively label an individual double-stranded DNA molecule with a single nanodiamond containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, and optically detect the paramagnetic resonance of NV spins in the nanodiamond probe. Analysis of the spectrum reveals that the nanodiamond probe has complete rotational freedom and that the characteristic time scale for reorientation of the nanodiamond probe is slow compared to the transverse spin relaxation time. This demonstration of EPR spectroscopy of a single nanodiamond labeled DNA provides the foundation for the development of single molecule magnetic resonance studies of complex biomolecular systems.

We report an investigation of charge, spin and lattice effects in the spin-Peierls state of the organic compound MEM(TCNQ)$_2$. The 16.5 GHz dielectric function along the chain axis shows an enhancement below the spin-Peierls transition temperature near 18 K consistent with the charge coupling to the elastic strain involved in the transition. The velocity of two elastic modes perpendicular to the chain axis presents anomalies at the transition which can be explained with a Landau free energy model including a linear-quadratic coupling energy term between the appropriate elastic strain $e$ and the spin-Peierls magnetic gap $Δ_q$. The analysis of the dielectric and elastic features aims toward an order parameter with an associated critical exponent $β\sim$ 0.36, which is similar to the three-dimensional behavior seen in other spin-Peierls materials. All these effects studied in a magnetic field up to 18 Teslas appear also compatible with a mean-field model of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-Peierls system.

We report an ultrasonic study of the magneto-elastic coupling of the hydrogenated and deuterated (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ organic salts. For both salts the temperature dependence of the longitudinal velocity along the c* axis displays a monotonic stiffening of the $C_{33}$ compressibility modulus upon cooling. Below the characteristic temperature scale 40 K the modulus stiffening becomes markedly enhanced, in concomitance with the reduction of spin degrees of freedom previously seen in magnetic measurements as low dimensional precursors of the spin-Peierls transition. The magneto-elastic coupling appears to be much weaker in the hydrogenated salt due to the highly inhomogeneous elastic behavior induced by the proximity of the charge ordering transition to the spin-Peierls phase. For the deuterated salt, an important anomaly in the ultrasound velocity is observed below the spin-Peierls transition temperature $T_{\rm SP}$ in agreement with scaling of the elastic deformation with the spin-Peierls order parameter. In spite of the weakly inhomogeneous character of the spin-Peierls phase transition, the magnetic field dependence of $T_{\rm SP}$ is well captured with the mean-field prediction for the lattice distorted Heisenberg spin chain.

High resolution ultrasonic velocity measurements have been used to determine the temperature -- magnetic-field phase diagram of the monoclinic multiferroic CuO. A new transition at TN3 = 230 K, corresponding to an intermediate state between the antiferromagnetic non-collinear spiral phase observed below TN2 = 229.3 K and the paramagnetic phase, is revealed. Anomalies associated with a first order transition to the commensurate collinear phase are also observed at TN1 = 213 K. For fields with B along the b axis, a spin-flop transition is detected between 11 T - 13 T at lower temperatures. Moreover, our analysis using a Landau-type free energy clearly reveals the necessity for an incommensurate collinear phase between the spiral and the paramagnetic phase. This model is also relevant to the phase diagrams of other monoclinic multiferroic systems.

Opacity is an important ingredient of the evolution of stars. The calculation of opacity coefficients is complicated by the fact that the plasma contains partially ionized heavy ions that contribute to opacity dominated by H and He. Up to now, the astrophysical community has greatly benefited from the work of the contributions of Los Alamos [1], Livermore [2] and the Opacity Project (OP) [3]. However unexplained differences of up to 50% in the radiative forces and Rosseland mean values for Fe have been noticed for conditions corresponding to stellar envelopes. Such uncertainty has a real impact on the understanding of pulsating stellar envelopes, on the excitation of modes, and on the identification of the mode frequencies. Temperature and density conditions equivalent to those found in stars can now be produced in laboratory experiments for various atomic species. Recently the photo-absorption spectra of nickel and iron plasmas have been measured during the LULI 2010 campaign, for temperatures between 15 and 40 eV and densities of ~3 mg/cm3. A large theoretical collaboration, the "OPAC", has been formed to prepare these experiments. We present here the set of opacity calculations performed by eight different groups for conditions relevant to the LULI 2010 experiment and to astrophysical stellar envelope conditions.

Up to now, these complex quantities have been estimated only theoretically. The development of the powerful tools of helio- and astero- seismology has made it possible to gain insights on the interiors of stars. Consequently, increased emphasis is now placed on knowledge of the monochromatic opacity coefficients. Here we review how these radiative properties play a role, and where they are most important. We then concentrate specifically on the envelopes of $β$ Cephei variable stars. We discuss the dispersion of eight different theoretical estimates of the monochromatic opacity spectrum and the challenges we need to face to check these calculations experimentally.

We report a study of the 16.5 GHz dielectric function of hydrogenated and deuterated organic salts (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$. The temperature behavior of the dielectric function is consistent with short-range polar order whose relaxation time decreases rapidly below the charge ordering temperature. If this transition has more a relaxor character in the hydrogenated salt, charge ordering is strengthened in the deuterated one where the transition temperature has increased by more than thirty percent. Anomalies in the dielectric function are also observed in the spin-Peierls ground state revealing some intricate lattice effects in a temperature range where both phases coexist. The variation of the spin-Peierls ordering temperature under magnetic field appears to follow a mean-field prediction despite the presence of spin-Peierls fluctuations over a very wide temperature range in the charge ordered state of these salts.

Discontinuities in elastic constants are detected at the superconducting transition of layered organic conductors κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}X by longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic velocity measurements. Symmetry arguments show that discontinuities in shear elastic constants can be explained in the orthorhombic compound only if the superconducting order parameter has a mixed character that can be of two types, either A_{1g}+B_{1g} or B_{2g}+B_{3g} in the classification of irreducible representations of the orthorhombic point group D_{2h}. Consistency with other measurements suggests that the A_{1g}+B_{1g} (d_{xy}+d_{z(x+y)}) possibility is realized. Such clear symmetry-imposed signatures of mixed order parameters have not been observed in other superconducting compounds.

The behavior of non-local thermal-equilibrium (NLTE) plasmas plays a central role in many fields of modern-day physics, such as laser-produced plasmas, astrophysics, inertial or magnetic confinement fusion devices, or X-ray sources. The proper description of these media in stationary cases requires to solve linear systems of thousands or more rate equations. A possible simplification for this arduous numerical task may lie in some type of statistical average, such as configuration or superconfiguration average. However to assess the validity of this procedure and to handle cases where isolated lines play an important role, it may be important to deal with detailed levels systems. This involves matrices with sometimes billions of elements, which are rather sparse but still involve thousands of diagonals. We propose here a numerical algorithm based on the LU decomposition for such linear systems. This method turns out to be orders of magnitude faster than the traditional Gauss elimination. And at variance with alternate methods based on conjugate gradients or minimization, no convergence or accuracy issues have been faced. Some examples are discussed in connection with the krypton and tungsten cases discussed at the last NLTE meeting. Furthermore, to assess the validity of configuration average, several criteria are discussed. While a criterion based on detailed balance is relevant in cases not too far from LTE but insufficient otherwise, an alternate criterion based on the use of a fictive configuration temperature is proposed and successfully tested. It appears that detailed calculations are sometimes necessary, which supports the search for an efficient solver as the one proposed here.

Time-resolved absorption of zinc sulfide (ZnS) and aluminum in the XUV-range has been measured. Thin foils in conditions close to local thermodynamic equilibrium were heated by radiation from laser-irradiated gold spherical cavities. Analysis of the aluminum foil radiative hydrodynamic expansion, based on the detailed atomic calculations of its absorption spectra, showed that the cavity emitted flux that heated the absorption foils corresponds to a radiation temperature in the range 55 60 eV. Comparison of the ZnS absorption spectra with calculations based on a superconfiguration approach identified the presence of species Zn6+ - Zn8+ and S5+ - S6+. Based on the validation of the radiative source simulations, experimental spectra were then compared to calculations performed by post-processing the radiative hydrodynamic simulations of ZnS. Satisfying agreement is found when temperature gradients are accounted for.

The characterization of out-of-local-thermal-equilibrium plasmas requires the use of collisional-radiative kinetic equations. This leads to the solution of large linear systems, for which statistical treatments such as configuration average may bring considerable simplification. In order to check the validity of this procedure, a criterion based on the comparison between a partial-rate systems and the Saha-Boltzmann solution is discussed in detail here. Several forms of this criterion are discussed. The interest of these variants is that they involve each type of relevant transition (collisional or radiative), which allows one to check separately the influence of each of these processes on the configuration-average validity. The method is illustrated by a charge-distribution analysis in carbon and neon plasmas. Finally, it is demonstrated that when the energy dispersion of every populated configuration is smaller than the electron thermal energy, the proposed criterion is fulfilled in each of its forms.

We report a study of the microwave conductivity of electron-doped Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ superconducting thin films using a cavity perturbation technique. The relative frequency shifts obtained for the samples placed at a maximum electric field location in the cavity are treated using the high conductivity limit presented recently by Peligrad $\textit{et}$ $\textit{al.}$ Using two resonance modes, TE$_{102}$ (16.5 GHz) and TE$_{101}$ (13 GHz) of the same cavity, only one adjustable parameter $Γ$ is needed to link the frequency shifts of an empty cavity to the ones of a cavity loaded with a perfect conductor. Moreover, by studying different sample configurations, we can relate the substrate effects on the frequency shifts to a scaling factor. These procedures allow us to extract the temperature dependence of the complex penetration depth and the complex microwave conductivity of two films with different quality. Our data confirm that all the physical properties of the superconducting state are consistent with an order parameter with lines of nodes. Moreover, we demonstrate the high sensitivity of these properties on the quality of the films.

A collisional-radiative model describing nonlocal-thermodynamic-equilibrium plasmas is developed. It is based on the HULLAC (Hebrew University Lawrence Livermore Atomic Code) suite for the transitions rates, in the zero-temperature radiation field hypothesis. Two variants of the model are presented: the first one is configuration averaged, while the second one is a detailed level version. Comparisons are made between them in the case of a carbon plasma; they show that the configuration-averaged code gives correct results for an electronic temperature Te=10 eV (or higher) but fails at lower temperatures such as Te=1 eV. The validity of the configuration-averaged approximation is discussed: the intuitive criterion requiring that the average configuration-energy dispersion must be less than the electron thermal energy turns out to be a necessary but far from sufficient condition. Another condition based on the resolution of a modified rate-equation system is proposed. Its efficiency is emphasized in the case of low-temperature plasmas. Finally, it is shown that near-threshold autoionization cascade processes may induce a severe failure of the configuration-average formalism.

We report an ultrasonic investigation of the elastic moduli on a single crystal of hexagonal YMnO_3 as a function of temperature. Stiffening anomalies in the antiferromagnetic Néel state below T_N = 72.4 K are observed on all the four elastic moduli C_{ii}. The anomalies are the most important on C_{11} and C_{66} for in-plane elastic deformations; this is consistent with a strong coupling of the lattice with the in-plane exchange interactions. We use a Landau free energy model to account for these elastic anomalies. We derive an expression which relates the temperature profile of the anomaly to the order parameter; the critical exponent associated to this parameter $β$ = 0.42 is not consistent with a chiral XY or 3D Heisenberg universality class, but more in agreement with a conventional antiferromagnetic long range order. A tiny softening anomaly on C_{11} for which hysteresis effects are observed could be indicative of an interaction between ferroelectric and magnetic domains at T_N. Moreover, magnetic fluctuations effects both above and below T_N are identified through abnormal temperature and magnetic field effects.

Ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements on the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $κ$-[BEDT-TTF]$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br give the first determination of the coexistence zone of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases which extends deep in the metallic part of the pressure-temperature phase diagram of these salts. This zone is identified from a precise control of the ordering in ethylene end groups which acts as an internal pressure. The two phases are found to compete whereas superconducting fluctuations begin to contribute to the attenuation at 15 K, namely at the onset of magnetic order that is well above the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ = 11.9 K. Finally, the temperature profile of sound attenuation for both longitudinal and transverse phonon polarizations is found to be inconsistent with a conventional \textit{s}-wave order parameter.

By means of high-resolution ultrasonic velocity measurements, as a function of temperature and magnetic field, the nature of the different low temperatures magnetic phase transitions observed for the quasi-one-dimensional compound CsNiCl3 is established. Special attention has been devoted to the field-induced 120 degree phase transition above the multicritical point in the H-T phase diagram where the elastic constant C44 reveals a step-like variation and hysteresis effects. These results represent the first experimental evidence that the 120 degree phase transition is weakly first order and contradict the popular notion of new universality classes for chiral systems.

Experimental and numerical studies of the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat and magnetization of single crystals of CsNiF3 have been performed at 2.4 K, 2.9 K, and 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 9 T oriented perpendicular to the easy plane. The experimental results confirm the presence of the theoretically predicted double peak structure in the specific heat arising from the formation of nonlinear spin modes. The demagnetizing effects are found to be negligible, and the overall agreement between the data and numerical predictions is better than reported for the case when the magnetic field was oriented in the easy plane. Demagnetizing effects might play a role in generating the difference observed between theory and experiment in previous work analyzing the excess specific heat using the sine-Gordon model.

The phase diagram of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$Cl has been investigated by ultrasonic velocity measurements under helium gas pressure. Different phase transitions were identified trough several elastic anomalies characterized from isobaric and isothermal sweeps. Our data reveal two crossover lines that end on the critical point terminating the first-order Mott transition line. When the critical point is approached along these lines, we observe a dramatic softening of the velocity which is consistent with a diverging compressibility of the electronic degrees of freedom.

Complementary angle-resolved photoemission and bulk-sensitive k-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of divalent hexaborides reveal a >1 eV X-point gap between the valence and conduction bands, in contradiction to the band overlap assumed in several models of their novel ferromagnetism. This semiconducting gap implies that carriers detected in transport measurements arise from defects, and the measured location of the bulk Fermi level at the bottom of the conduction band implicates boron vacancies as the origin of the excess electrons. The measured band structure and X-point gap in CaB_6 additionally provide a stringent test case for proper inclusion of many-body effects in quasi-particle band calculations.

The temperature profile of both the in-plane and out-of-plane longitudinal velocities showed a large stiffening anomaly below the insulating paramagnetic to metallic ferromagnetic transition. Magnetic fluctuations effects consistent with the layered structure are evidenced as a frequency dependent velocity softening above the transition. The magneto-elastic coupling has been studied in magnetic field values up to 8 Tesla: the observations are consistent with a substantial magnetic anisotropy and a ferromagnetic order parameter with moments lying in the layers.

In an ultrasonic experiment, we have investigated the temperature profile of the velocity of longitudinal elastic waves propagating along a direction perpendicular to the layers in the organic superconductors kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2X, X = Cu(SCN)_2 and Cu[N(CN)_2]Br. Although a small decrease of the velocity is observed at the superconducting transition, the most anomalous behavior is obtained in the normal metallic state where an important softening is identified around 40-50 K. In order to characterize the origin of this anomaly, we have studied its behavior under the application of hydrostatic pressure. The observed behavior is found to mimic those of the transport and magnetic properties of these materials which have been attributed to the magnetic fluctuations. Following the example of one-dimensional insulating systems where coupling between longitudinal acoustic waves and magnetic fluctuations is known to occur, our results suggest that the pseudo-gap regime of these two-dimensional organic superconductors is dominated by a similar mechanism.

We report a microwave study of the longitudinal and transverse transport properties of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ in its normal phase. The contactless technique have provided a direct measurement of the temperature profile of the resistivity along the {\bf b'} direction and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. A characteristic energy scale ($T_x \sim 40 K$) has been observed which delimits a transient regime from an insulating to a metallic behavior. This anomalous profile is discussed in terms of the onset of coherent transport properties along the {\bf b'} direction below 40 K. This is also supported by the observation of a finite longitudinal and transverse magnetoresitances only below 40 K, indicative of a two-dimensional regime. Below $T_x$, however, strong deviations with respect to a Fermi liquid behavior are evidenced.

Such distance measures are crucial to understanding the origins and dynamics of IVCs, as the distances set most of the basic physical parameters for the clouds. Currently there are very few IVCs with reliably known distances. This paper describes in some detail the basic techniques used to measure distances, with particular emphasis on the the analysis of interstellar absorption line data, which forms the basis of our distance determinations. As an example, we provide a detailed description of our distance determination for the Draco Cloud. Preliminary distance limits for a total of eleven clouds are provided.

The understanding of the nature of intermediate and high velocity gas in the Milky Way is hampered by a paucity of distance estimates to individual clouds. A project has been started at the David Dunlap Observatory to address this lack of distance measures by observing early-type stars along the line of sight towards these clouds and searching for sodium doublet absorption at the clouds' systemic velocities. Distances to foreground stars (no absorption) and background stars (with absorption) are estimated from spectroscopic parallax, and thus the distance to the bracketed cloud is estimated. In this Letter, we present the first result from this ongoing project, a measurement of the distance to the Draco Cloud, which is the most studied of the intermediate velocity clouds. The result presented here is the first distance bracket which tightly constrains the position of the Draco Cloud. We briefly describe our target selection and observing methodology, and then demonstrate absorption at the velocity of the Draco Cloud for one star (TYC~4194~2188), and a lack of absorption for several other stars. We derive a distance bracket to the Draco Cloud of 463$^{+192}_{-136}$ to 618$^{+243}_{-174}$~pc.

We have used thermal conduction and transverse sound attenuation to probe the anisotropy of the gap structure in two superconducting phases of UPt$_3$. For the low-temperature phase B, transverse sound has in the past provided strong evidence for a line node in the basal plane. Now, from the anisotropy of the thermal conductivity we further establish the presence of a node along the c-axis and provide information on its k-dependence. For the largely unexplored high-temperature phase A, our study of the attenuation for two directions of the polarization yields directional information on the quasiparticle spectrum, and the first clear indication of a different gap structure in the two phases.

We have measured the transverse ultrasonic attenuation, $α_{qε}$, in a well-characterized single crystal of $UPt_3$ for propagation direction, ${\bf q}$, in the basal plane and polarization, $ε$, in and out of the plane. Unlike previous measurements, the sample was of sufficient purity to exhibit three well-defined phases as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We uncover a functional dependence for the attenuation in the (zero field) high temperature phase (A-phase) which is distinctly different than that in the low temperature (B) phase. Our data provide unique directional information on the quasiparticle momentum distribution in this largely unstudied phase of $UPt_3$ and provide the first direct evidence that the two zero-field phases possess different symmetries.
