Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu $L_3$ and O $K$ resonances, we investigate non-equilibrium dynamics of $Q_a = Q_b = 0$ nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. The orbital selectivity of the resonant x-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2$p$ and Cu 3$d$ states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is an evolving tool for investigating spin dynamics of strongly correlated materials, which complements inelastic neutron scattering. Both techniques have found that non-spin-conserving (NSC) excitations in quasi-1D isotropic quantum antiferromagnets are confined to the two-spinon phase space. Outside this phase space, only spin-conserving (SC) four-spinon excitations have been detected using O $K$-edge RIXS. Here, we investigate SrCuO$_2$ and find four-spinon excitations outside the two-spinon phase space at both O $K$- and Cu $L_3$-edges. Using the Kramers-Heisenberg formalism, we demonstrate that the four-spinon excitations arise from both SC and NSC processes at Cu $L_3$-edge. We show that these new excitations only appear in the second-order terms of the ultra-fast core-hole lifetime expansion and arise from long-range spin fluctuations. These results thus open a new window to the spin dynamics of quantum magnets.

However, short-range magnetic correlations occurring in the absence of long-range order, for example in spin-frustrated systems, are inaccessible to many ultrafast techniques. Here, we show how time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) is capable of probing such short-ranged magnetic dynamics in a charge-transfer insulator through the detection of a Zhang-Rice singlet exciton. Utilizing trRIXS measurements at the O K-edge, and in combination with model calculations, we probe the short-range spin-correlations in the frustrated spin chain material CuGeO3 following photo-excitation, revealing a strong coupling between the local lattice and spin sub-systems.

The knowledge of the charge carrier distribution among the different orbitals of Cu and O is a precondition for the understanding of the physical properties of various Cu-O frameworks. We employ electron energy-loss spectroscopy to elucidate the charge carrier plasmon dispersion in (La, Ca)$_x$Sr$_{14-x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ in dependency of $x$ as well as temperature. We observe that the energy of the plasmon increases upon increasing Ca content, which signals an internal charge redistribution between the two Cu-O subsystems. Moreover, contrary to an uncorrelated model we come to the conclusion that the holes transferred to the Cu$_2$O$_3$ ladders are mainly located in the bonding and not in the anti-bonding band. This is caused by an orbital dependent Mott transition.

One-dimensional (1D) magnetic insulators have attracted significant interest as a platform for studying emergent phenomena such as quasiparticle fractionalization and quantum criticality. The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain of spins-1/2 is an important reference system; its elementary excitations are spin-1/2 quasiparticles called spinons that are always created in pairs. However, while inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments routinely observe the excitation continuum associated with two-spinon states, the presence of more complex dynamics associated with four-spinon states has only been inferred from comparison with theory. Here, we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is capable of accessing the four-spinon excitations directly, in a spectroscopic region separated from the two-spinon continuum. Our results provide the first direct measurement of four-spinon excitations, which is made possible by the fundamentally different correlation functions probed by RIXS compared to INS. This advance holds great promise as a tool in the search for novel quantum states, in particular quantum spin liquids.

The S=1/2 Heisenberg spin chain compound SrCuO2 doped with different amounts of nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), zinc (Zn) and cobalt (Co) has been studied by means of Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Replacing only a few of the S=1/2 Cu ions with Ni, Pd, Zn or Co has a major impact on the magnetic properties of the spin chain system. In the case of Ni, Pd and Zn an unusual line broadening in the low temperature NMR spectra reveals the existence of an impurity-induced local alternating magnetization (LAM), while exponentially decaying spin-lattice relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ towards low temperatures indicate the opening of spin gaps. A distribution of gap magnitudes is proven by a stretched spin-lattice relaxation and a variation of $T_1^{-1}$ within the broad resonance lines. These observations depend strongly on the impurity concentration and therefore can be understood using the model of finite segments of the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, i.e. pure chain segmentation due to S = 0 impurities. This is surprising for Ni as it was previously assumed to be a magnetic impurity with S = 1 which is screened by the neighboring copper spins. In order to confirm the S = 0 state of the Ni, we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and compared the measurements to simulated XAS spectra based on multiplet ligand-field theory. Furthermore, Zn doping leads to much smaller effects on both the NMR spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates, indicating that Zn avoids occupying Cu sites. For magnetic Co impurities, $T_1^{-1}$ does not obey the gap like decrease, and the low-temperature spectra get very broad. This could be related to the increase of the Neel temperature which was observed by recent muSR and susceptibility measurements, and is most likely an effect of the impurity spin $S\neq0$.

Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. In underdoped cuprate superconductors, a rich competition occurs between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order. Whether rotational symmetry breaking (nematicity) occurs intrinsically and generically or as a consequence of other orders is under debate. Here we employ resonant x-ray scattering in stripe-ordered (La,M)_2CuO_4 to probe the relationship between electronic nematicity of the Cu 3d orbitals, structure of the (La,M)_2O_2 layers, and CDW order. We find distinct temperature dependences for the structure of the (La,M)_2O_2 layers and the electronic nematicity of the CuO_2 planes, with only the latter being enhanced by the onset of CDW order. These results identify electronic nematicity as an order parameter that is distinct from a purely structural order parameter in underdoped striped cuprates.

The magnitude of the spin pseudogap scales with doping level. Our results therefore evidence the finite-size character of this phenomenon. Moreover, an unusual narrowing of the low temperature NMR lines reveals the suppression of the impurity-induced staggered paramagnetic response with increasing doping level.

We discuss the magnetic properties of a Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystal as investigated by means of different experimental techniques. In the literature, a conventional itinerant ferromagnetic state is reported for the Mo$^{4+}$ sublattice below $\sim 78$ K. However, our results of dc magnetometry, muon spin spectroscopy ($μ^{+}$SR) and high-harmonics magnetic ac susceptibility unambiguously evidence highly disordered conditions in this phase, in spite of the crystalline and chemical order. This disordered magnetic state shares several common features with amorphous ferromagnetic alloys. This scenario for Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is supported by the anomalously high values of the critical exponents, as mainly deduced by a scaling analysis of our dc magnetization data and confirmed by the other techniques. Moreover, $μ^{+}$SR detects a significant static magnetic disorder at the microscopic scale. At the same time, the critical divergence of the third-harmonic component of the ac magnetic susceptibility around $\sim 78$ K leads to additional evidence towards the glassy nature of this magnetic phase. Finally, the longitudinal relaxation of $μ^{+}$ spin polarization (also supported by results of ac susceptibility) evidences re-entrant glassy features similar to amorphous ferromagnets.

We report $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation measurements on the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr$_{1.9}$Ca$_{0.1}$CuO$_3$. An exponentially decreasing spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T$_1$ indicates the opening of a spin gap. This behavior is very similar to what has been observed for the cognate zigzag spin chain compound Sr$_{0.9}$Ca$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$, and confirms that the occurrence of a spin gap upon Ca doping is independent of the interchain exchange coupling $J'$. Our results therefore generally prove the appearance of a spin gap in an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain induced by a local bond disorder of the intrachain exchange coupling $J$. A low temperature upturn of 1/T$_1$ evidences growing magnetic correlations. However, zero field muon spin rotation measurements down to 1.5 K confirm the absence of magnetic order in this compound which is most likely suppressed by the opening of the spin gap.

We investigate the effect of disorder on the heat transport properties of the $S=\tfrac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ upon chemically substituting Sr by increasing concentrations of Ca. As Ca occupies sites outside but near the Cu-O-Cu spin chains, bond disorder, i.e. a spatial variation of the exchange interaction $J$, is expected to be realized in these chains. We observe that the magnetic heat conductivity ($κ_{\mathrm{mag}}$) due to spinons propagating in the chains is gradually but strongly suppressed with increasing amount of Ca, where the doping dependence can be understood in terms of increased scattering of spinons due to Ca-induced disorder. This is also reflected in the spinon mean free path which can be separated in a doping independent but temperature dependent scattering length due to spinon-phonon scattering, and a temperature independent but doping dependent spinon-defect scattering length. The latter spans from very large ($>$ 1300 lattice spacings) to very short ($\sim$ 12 lattice spacings) and scales with the average distance between two neighboring Ca atoms. Thus, the Ca-induced disorder acts as an effective defect within the spin chain, and the doping scheme allows to cover the whole doping regime between the clean and the dirty limits. Interestingly, at maximum impurity level we observe, in Ca-doped Sr$_2$CuO$_3$, an almost linear increase of $κ_{\mathrm{mag}}$ at temperatures above 100 K which reflects the intrinsic low temperature behavior of heat transport in a Heisenberg spin chain. These findings are quite different from that observed for the Ca-doped double spin chain compound, SrCuO$_2$, where the effect of Ca seems to saturate already at intermediate doping levels.

Since 139La relaxation data provide evidence of the thermodynamic critical fluctuations associated with the structural phase transitions, HTT -> LTO and LTO -> LTT, we conclude that the structural transitions in Eu-doped La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} should be of the order-disorder type rather than of the displacive type observed in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4}. We study the absorption spectra of the yellow excitons in Cu$_2$O in high magnetic fields using polarization-resolved optical absorption measurements with a high frequency resolution. We show that the symmetry of the yellow exciton results in unusual selection rules for the optical absorption of polarized light and that the mixing of ortho- and para- excitons in magnetic field is important. Our calculation of the energies of the yellow exciton series in an arbitrary magnetic field gives an excellent fit to experimental data and allows us to understand the complex structure of excitonic levels and their magnetic field dependence, which resolves the old-standing disagreement between the results of optical absorption and cyclotron resonance measurements.

Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain materials are known to substantially alter their static and dynamic properties when experiencing an effective transverse staggered field originating from the varying local environment of the individual spins. We present a temperature-, angular- and field-dependent 29Si NMR study of the model compound BaCu2Si2O7. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of the divergent low-temperature transverse susceptibility, predicted by theory for spin chains in coexisting longitudinal and transverse staggered fields. Our analysis first employs a finite-temperature "Density Matrix Renormalization Group" (DMRG) study of the relevant one-dimensional Hamiltonian. Next we compare our numerical with the presently known analytical results. With an analysis based on crystal symmetries we show how the anisotropic contribution to the sample magnetization is experimentally accessible even below the ordering temperature, in spite of its competition with the collinear order parameter of the antiferromagnetic phase. The modification of static and dynamic properties of the system due to the presence of a local transverse staggered field (LTSF) acting on the one-dimensional spin array are argued to cause the unusual spin reorientation transitions observed in BaCu2Si2O7. On the basis of a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis, we discuss aspects of competing spin structures in the presence of magnetic order and the enhanced transverse susceptibility.

As an elementary particle the electron carries spin \hbar/2 and charge e. When binding to the atomic nucleus it also acquires an angular momentum quantum number corresponding to the quantized atomic orbital it occupies (e.g., s, p or d). Even if electrons in solids form bands and delocalize from the nuclei, in Mott insulators they retain their three fundamental quantum numbers: spin, charge and orbital[1]. The hallmark of one-dimensional (1D) physics is a breaking up of the elementary electron into its separate degrees of freedom[2]. The separation of the electron into independent quasi-particles that carry either spin (spinons) or charge (holons) was first observed fifteen years ago[3]. Using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering on the 1D Mott-insulator Sr2CuO3 we now observe also the orbital degree of freedom separating. We resolve an orbiton liberating itself from spinons and propagating through the lattice as a distinct quasi-particle with a substantial dispersion of ~0.2 eV.

We have investigated the thermal conductivity κ_mag of high-purity single crystals of the spin chain compound Sr2CuO3 which is considered an excellent realization of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. We find that the spinon heat conductivity κ_mag is strongly enhanced as compared to previous results obtained on samples with lower chemical purity. The analysis of κ_mag allows to compute the spinon mean free path l_mag as a function of temperature. At low-temperature we find l_mag\sim0.5\mum, corresponding to more than 1200 chain unit cells. Upon increasing the temperature, the mean free path decreases strongly and approaches an exponential decay ~1/T*exp(T*/T) which is characteristic for umklapp processes with the energy scale k_B T*. Based on Matthiesen's rule we decompose l_mag into a temperature-independent spinon-defect scattering length l0 and a temperature dependent spinon-phonon scattering length l_sp(T). By comparing l_mag(T) of Sr2CuO3 with that of SrCuO2, we show that the spin-phonon interaction, as expressed by l_sp is practically the same in both systems. The comparison of the empirically derived l_sp with model calculations for the spin-phonon interaction of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XY model yields reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

We study the impact of a weak bond disorder on the spinon heat transport in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg chain material Sr_{1-x}Ca_xCuO_2. We observe a drastic suppression in the magnetic heat conductivity kappa_mag even at tiny disorder levels (i.e., Ca-doping levels), in stark contrast to previous findings for kappa_mag of S=1/2 two-dimensional square lattice and two-leg spin-ladder systems, where a similar bond disorder has no effect on kappa_mag. Hence, our results underpin the exceptional role of integrability of the S=1/2 AFM Heisenberg chain model and suggest that the bond disorder effectively destroys the ballistic nature of its heat transport. We further show that the suppression of kappa_mag is captured by an effective spinon-impurity scattering length, which exhibits the same doping dependence as the long-distance exponential decay length of the spin-spin correlation as determined by density-matrix renormalization group calculations.

We present angle-resolved photoemission studies of (La1-zPrz)2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 with x=0.4 and z=0.1,0.2 and 0.4 along with density functional theory calculations and x-ray scattering data. Our results show that the bilayer splitting in the ferromagnetic metallic phase of these materials is small, if not completely absent. The charge carriers are therefore confined to a single MnO2-layer, which in turn results in a strongly nested Fermi surface. In addition to this, the spectral function also displays clear signatures of an electronic ordering instability well below the Fermi level. The increase of the corresponding interaction strength with z and its magnitude of ~400 meV make the coupling to a bare phonon highly unlikely. Instead we conclude that fluctuating order, involving electronic and lattice degrees of freedom, cause the observed renormalisation of the spectral features.

The dielectric properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_4$ single crystals with x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 were studied by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy as a function of temperature and momentum transfer. A clear signature of the doped holes is observed around 1.65 eV energy loss, where spectral weight emerges with increasing x. For all $x \neq 0$, this doping-induced excitation can propagate within the ab-plane, as revealed by a clear upward dispersion of the corresponding loss peak with increasing momentum transfer. The hole-induced excitation also shifts to higher energies with the onset of magnetic correlations for x = 0.5, implying a strong coupling of charge and spin dynamics. We conclude that (i) the loss feature at 1.65 eV is a signature of electronic polarons, which are created around doped holes, and that (ii) this low-energy excitation involves the charge transfer between manganese and oxygen. The finite dispersion of these excitations further indicates significant polaron-polaron interactions.

Photo-excitation in complex oxides1 transfers charge across semicovalent bonds, drastically perturbing spin and orbital orders2. Light may then be used in compounds like magnetoresistive manganites to control magnetism on nanometre lengthscales and ultrafast timescales. Here, we show how ultrafast resonant soft x-ray diffraction can separately probe the photo-induced dynamics of spin and orbital orders in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4. Ultrafast melting of CE antiferromagnetic spin order is evidenced by the disappearance of a (1/4,1/4,1/2) diffraction peak. On the other hand the (1/4,1/4,0) peak, reflecting orbital order, is only partially reduced. Cluster calculations aid our interpretation by considering different magnetically ordered states accessible after photo-excitation. Nonthermal coupling between light and magnetism emerges as a primary aspect of photo-induced phase transitions in manganites.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy studies have been performed in order to get a deeper insight into the electronic structure and elementary excitations of the two-leg ladder system Ca$_{11}$Sr$_3$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. We find a strong anisotropy of the loss function for momentum transfers along the a and c-crystallographic axis, and a remarkable linear plasmon dispersion for a momentum transfer parallel to the legs of the ladders. The investigated spectral features are attributed to localized and delocalized charge-transfer excitations and the charge carrier plasmon. The charge carrier plasmon position and dispersion in the long wave-length limit agree well with expectations based upon the band structure of the two-leg ladder, while the observed quasi-linear plasmon dispersion might be related to the peculiar properties of underdoped cuprates in general.

For $x=0.125$ and 0.15 a kink-like anomaly is present in the vicinity of the onset of charge stripe order in the LTT phase, suggestive of enhanced positive quasiparticle Nernst response in the stripe ordered phase. At higher temperature, all doping levels except $x=0.2$ exhibit a further kink anomaly in the LTO phase which cannot unambiguously be related to stripe order. Moreover, a direct comparison between the Nernst coefficients of stripe ordering La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at the doping levels $x=0.125$ and $x=0.15$ reveals only weak differences. Experimental evidence, however, for such anomalous transport has been lacking ever since. Here we provide experimental evidence for ballistic heat transport in a S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. In particular, we investigate high purity samples of the chain cuprate SrCuO2 and observe a huge magnetic heat conductivity $κ_{mag}$. An extremely large spinon mean free path of more than a micrometer demonstrates that $κ_{mag}$ is only limited by extrinsic scattering processes which is a clear signature of ballistic transport in the underlying spin model.

Time-and-frequency resolved pump-probe optical spectroscopy is used to investigate the effect of the impulsive injection of delocalized excitations through a charge-transfer process in insulating CuGeO3. A large broadening of the charge-transfer edge is observed on the sub-ps timescale. The modification of this spectral feature can not be attributed to the local increase of the effective temperature, as a consequence of the energy absorbed by the pump pulse. The measured modifications of the optical properties of the system are consistent with the creation of a non-thermal state, metastable on the ps timescale, after the pump-induced impulsive modification of the electron interactions.

The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlore lattice at $\sim$ 9 GPa. The observed phonon-assisted luminescence yields information on the statistical distribution of occupied states. Additional time-resolved experiments provide a unique opportunity to directly determine the time evolution of the thermodynamical properties of the paraexciton gas. Because the lifetime of paraexciton is hardly affected by the optical activation in a strong magnetic field, this opens new possibilities for studies aiming at Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons in bulk semiconductors.

Injection of higher currents to the crystal causes a disappearance of the steplike transition. These findings have a close relationship with the presence of the short-range charge-ordered clusters pinned within the PMI matrix of the crystal studied.

We present here temperature-dependent Raman, x-ray diffraction and specific heat studies between room temperature and 12 K on single crystals of spin-ice pyrochlore compound $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and its non-magnetic analogue $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$. Raman data show a "new" band not predicted by factor group analysis of Raman-active modes for the pyrochlore structure in $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$, appearing below a temperature of $T_c=$110 K with a concomitant contraction of the cubic unit cell volume as determined from the powder x-ray diffraction analysis. Low temperature Raman experiments on O$^{18}$-isotope substituted $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ confirm the phonon origin of the "new" mode. These findings, absent in $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$, suggest that the room temperature cubic lattice of the pyrochlore $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ undergoes a "subtle" structural transformation near $T_c$. We find anomalous \textit{red-shift} of some of the phonon modes in both the $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and the $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$ as the temperature decreases, which is attributed to strong phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions.

Density waves are inherent to the phase diagrams of materials that exhibit unusual, and sometimes extraordinarily useful properties, such as superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. While the pure charge density waves (CDW) are well described by an itinerant approach, where electrons are treated as waves propagating through the crystal, the charge-orbital ordering (COO) is usually explained by a local approach, where the electrons are treated as localized on the atomic sites. Here we show that in the half-doped manganite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 (LSMO) the electronic susceptibility, calculated from the angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES), exhibits a prominent nesting-driven peak at one quarter of the Brillouin zone diagonal, that is equal to the reciprocal lattice vector of the charge-orbital pattern. Our results demonstrate that the Fermi surface geometry determines the propensity of the system to form a COO state which, in turn, implies the applicability of the itinerant approach also to the COO.

e report the effect of pressure on the steplike magnetostriction of single crystalline bilayered manganite (LaPr)1.2Sr1.8Mn2O8, for our understandings of the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase. The application of pressure suppresses a steplike transformation and causes a broad change in the magnetostriction. The injection of an electric current to the crystal also weakens the steplike variation in both the magnetostriction and magnetoresistance. The stabilization of ferromagnetic interaction or the delocalization of charge carriers is promoted with the applied pressure or applied current, resulting in the suppressed steplike behavior. Our findings suggest that the step phenomenon is closely related to the existence of localized carriers such as the short-range charge-orbital ordered clusters.

We report on an investigation of the double-layer manganite series (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 (0 <= z <= 1), carried out on single crystals by means of both macroscopic magnetometry and local probes of magnetism (muSR, 55Mn NMR). Muons and NMR demonstrate an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state at non-ferromagnetic compositions (z >= 0.6), while more moderate Pr substitutions (0.2 <= z <= 0.4) induce a spin reorientation transition within the ferromagnetic phase.
A large magnetic susceptibility is detected at {Tc,TN} < T < 250K at all compositions. From 55Mn NMR spectroscopy, such a response is unambiguously assigned to the intergrowth of a ferromagnetic pseudocubic phase (La(1-z)Pr(z))(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3, with an overall volume fraction estimated as 0.5-0.7% from magnetometry. Evidence is provided for the coupling of the magnetic moments of these inclusions with the magnetic moments of the surrounding (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 phase, as in the case of finely dispersed impurities. We argue that the ubiquitous intergrowth phase may play a role in the marked first-order character of the magnetic transition and the metamagnetic properties above Tc reported for double-layer manganites.

The phonon and crystal field excitations in several rare earth titanate pyrochlores are investigated. Magnetic measurements on single crystals of Gd2Ti2O7, Tb2Ti2O7, Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7 are used for characterization, while Raman spectroscopy and terahertz time domain spectroscopy are employed to probe the excitations of the materials. The lattice excitations are found to be analogous across the compounds over the whole temperature range investigated (295-4 K). The resulting full phononic characterization of the R2Ti2O7 pyrochlore structure is then used to identify crystal field excitations observed in the materials. Several crystal field excitations have been observed in Tb2Ti2O7 in Raman spectroscopy for the first time, among which all of the previously reported excitations. The presence of additional crystal field excitations, however, suggests the presence of two inequivalent Tb3+ sites in the low temperature structure. Furthermore, the crystal field level at approximately 13 cm-1 is found to be both Raman and dipole active, indicating broken inversion symmetry in the system and thus undermining its current symmetry interpretation. In addition, evidence is found for a significant crystal field-phonon coupling in Tb2Ti2O7. These findings call for a careful reassessment of the low temperature structure of Tb2Ti2O7, which may serve to improve its theoretical understanding.

We present here magnetization, specific heat and Raman studies on single-crystalline specimens of the first pyrochlore member $Sm_2Ti_2O_7$ of the rare-earth titanate series. Its analogous compound $Sm_2Zr_2O_7$ in the rare-earth zirconate series is also investigated in the polycrystalline form. The Sm spins in $Sm_2Ti_2O_7$ remain unordered down to at least T = 0.5 K. The absence of magnetic ordering is attributed to very small values of exchange ($θ_{cw} ~ -0.26 K$) and dipolar interaction ($μ_{eff} ~ 0.15 μ_B$) between the $Sm^{3+}$ spins in this pyrochlore. In contrast, the pyrochlore $Sm_2Zr_2O_7$ is characterized by a relatively large value of Sm-Sm spin exchange ($θ_{cw} ~ - 10 K$); however, long-range ordering of the $Sm^{3+}$ spins is not established at least down to T = 0.67 K, due to frustration of the $Sm^{3+}$ spins on the pyrochlore lattice. The ground state of $Sm^{3+}$ ions in both pyrochlores is a well-isolated Kramer's doublet. The higher-lying crystal field excitations are observed in the low-frequency region of the Raman spectra of the two compounds recorded at T = 10 K. At higher temperatures, the magnetic susceptibility of $Sm_2Ti_2O_7$ shows a broad maximum at T = 140 K while that of $Sm_2Zr_2O_7$ changes monotonically. Whereas $Sm_2Ti_2O_7$ is a promising candidate for investigating spin-fluctuations on a frustrated lattice as indicated by our data, the properties of $Sm_2Zr_2O_7$ seem to conform to a conventional scenario where geometrical frustration of the spin exclude their long-range ordering.

We report an ultrasonic investigation of the elastic moduli on a single crystal of hexagonal YMnO_3 as a function of temperature. Stiffening anomalies in the antiferromagnetic Néel state below T_N = 72.4 K are observed on all the four elastic moduli C_{ii}. The anomalies are the most important on C_{11} and C_{66} for in-plane elastic deformations; this is consistent with a strong coupling of the lattice with the in-plane exchange interactions. We use a Landau free energy model to account for these elastic anomalies. We derive an expression which relates the temperature profile of the anomaly to the order parameter; the critical exponent associated to this parameter $β$ = 0.42 is not consistent with a chiral XY or 3D Heisenberg universality class, but more in agreement with a conventional antiferromagnetic long range order. A tiny softening anomaly on C_{11} for which hysteresis effects are observed could be indicative of an interaction between ferroelectric and magnetic domains at T_N. Moreover, magnetic fluctuations effects both above and below T_N are identified through abnormal temperature and magnetic field effects.

We present magnetic and thermodynamic studies on the metallic-ferromagnet pyrochlore Sm2Mo2O7. Our studies, carried out on oriented crystals, suggest that the Sm spins have an ordered spin-ice ground state below about T* = 15 K. The temperature- and field-evolution of the ordered spin-ice state are governed by an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Sm and Mo spins. We propose that as a consequence of a robust feature of this coupling, the tetrahedra aligned with the external field adopt a "1-in, 3-out" spin structure as opposed to "3-in, 1-out" in dipolar spin ices, as the field exceeds a critical value.

Both compounds exhibit strong anomalies in the thermal-expansion coefficient at zero and at high magnetic field as well as an exceptionally large magnetostriction. All these structural effects, which are strongest in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, point to a redistribution of electrons between the different $t_{2g}$ orbitals tuned by temperature and magnetic field. The temperature and the field dependence of the thermal-expansion anomalies in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ yield evidence for a critical end-point lying close to the low-temperature metamagnetic transition; however, the expected scaling relations are not well fulfilled.

The elastic and magnetic properties of a single crystal of 327 bilayer manganese oxide $(La_{1-z} Pr_z)_{1.2} Sr_{1.8} Mn_2 O_7$ with $z$=0.6 have been investigated by ultrasonic and high-field magnetization measurements. A distinct elastic anomaly was observed at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields when crossing the phase boundary. A pronounced elastic softening as a function of magnetic field ($H$) appears across the boundary of the low-temperature magnetic phase below around 40 K, accompanied by a distinct hysteresis. In the high field region, however, these elastic constants exhibit an increase with increasing a magnetic field in the high-field region. The high-field magnetization measurement characterizing the magnetic state clarified a strong connection between elastic strains and magnetic moments. The new metamagnetic transition was found in the high-field region above 40 K, accompanied with no hysteresis. The present results of elastic constants are discussed in terms of a coupling effect between elastic strains associated with sound waves and relevant magnetic moments, and relevant conduction bands. They are explained reasonably in terms of a strong coupling between elastic strains and magnetic susceptibility $chi$$_{m}$=$partial$$M$/$partial$$H$.

The chemical selectivity and great sensitivity of the Extended X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy technique allowed the determination, in the paramagnetic phase, of the structural distortions induced by doping in the spin-Peierls CuGeO$_3$ compound. The distorted environments were analyzed as a function of concentration, magnetic nature of impurity and the substitution site (Ni, Mn and Zn impurities on the Cu site, Si impurity on the Ge site). This has led to estimate the variation of the angles and pair distances, and hence to evaluate the magnetic coupling along the Cu chains in the vicinity of the impurities. The antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu first neighbors in the pure sample is found to be weakened around Ni, almost cancelled in the case of Mn doping, and even to change sign, producing a ferromagnetic coupling for Si doping. More generally, the structural distortions on a local scale are shown to be key parameters for the understanding of the magnetic properties of doped spin-Peierls compounds.

We have studied the spin anisotropy in spin-singlet ground state compounds and the magnetic chirality, as measured by inelastic polarized neutron scattering techniques, in the chain-sublattice of Sr14Cu24O41. In-plane and out of plane magnetic fluctuations are measured to be anisotropic and further discussed in the light of the current hypothesis of spin-orbit coupling. We show that under appropriate conditions of magnetic field and neutron polarization, the \textit{trivial} magnetic chirality selects only one of the Zeeman splitted triplet states for scattering and erases the other one that posses opposite helicity. Our analysis pertains to previous studies on dynamical magnetic chirality and chiral critical exponents, where the ground state is chiral itself, the so-called \textit{non-trivial} dynamical magnetic chirality. As it turns out, both \textit{trivial} and \textit{non-trivial} dynamical magnetic chirality have identical selection rules for inelastic polarized neutron scattering experiments and it is not at all evident that they can be distinguished in a paramagnetic compound.
